4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel safe on the Lamar University Campus at most times.

Campus Food: The food on campus is good

Greek Life: Most of them are snobby and cliquey.

Off-Campus Dining: Some off-campus dining places near campus offer student discounts.

College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I don't live off campus, so I don't know. I have a dorm scholarship, so I stay on campus.

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I don't go to parties, so I wouldn't know.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I'm only in the band sorority, which acts more as a service organization. I don't really hear much about the social sororities or fraternities on campus. I know they throw parties occasionally, but that's about it.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: I absolutely love my major here. The teachers are supportive, I have great opportunities, and I'm learning a lot.

Health & Safety: Things happen. Date rape is real, and not enough people speak up about it.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I love my professors. Especially my music ones. They really want to see me succeed, and help me out when I need it. They push me to become a better student, musician, educator and overall person. I couldn't dream of better teachers.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I applied for several scholarships but didn't receive many. It was kind of upsetting. I was more than qualified, and people who don't go to class or have any initiative are Mirabeaus. Sort of unfair.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: I practically live in the music building, so those people are really all I ever see. Everyone's friendly for the most part. We're all busy with music major life. We all feel each other's pain and help each other out when we can.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: It's beaumont. There's not a whole lot to do there. We make do with what we have.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: It's nice to have apartment style dorms. Having a private bedroom is great. I just wish that things would get repaired faster.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: The teachers are concerned about the students' education. What we do outside class isn't really a concern as long as we're learning.

2 College Sophomore

Athletics: Absolutely no school spirit. The football team has only been back for 5 years. We're going to be in a a rebuilding phase for a while.

4 College Freshman

Academics: The professor were very helpful when needed. I learned a lot in my first semester of college, and I'm excited to go back in the fall and learn more.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: There are police that patrol the campus

Off-Campus Dining: I rarely eat off campus

Greek Life: The greek life is big here, but not the same as other schools

Administration: No extremely limiting policies that I am aware of, but it's the complete opposite of progressive. Tough to change, and trying to get anything accomplished can be a long process. I get the safety for dorm ID, but not being able to have guests overnight without a 10 days notice is a bit childish. And some teachers keep class attendance, marking students off if they miss more than a few classes a semester - worse than high school.

Local Area: Beaumont, TX has been ranked on the most depressed, most obese, most polluted, most crime, and least educated cities lists. What's next? It could be due to our many refineries as it is a prime place for oil.

On the bright side, campus police/security is up to par, despite the "sketchy" surrounding area. Not much to do nearby if you're looking for something unique or hip. Other than businesses and Crockett Street (hello, Dixie's), the downtown side of Beaumont gives off a sort of dead, eerie vibe if you go at the wrong time. The northern side of Beaumont is a growing though, where you'll find a mall, movie theaters, plenty of restaurants, and bowling within driving distance. Nothing is within walking distance. I repeat, NOTHING. Not even a decent grocery store or coffee shop open on weekends. Without a car, you are really limited.

Athletics: As a student athlete, I can say that aside from the football and basketball complex (both are nice), we are pretty limited by our facilities. I have never run on a worse track in my life (no joke). Talk is that we are in the process of building new facilities, but we have yet to see any action being taken. Football and basketball games are most watched and do bring in a lot of local support (probably more Beaumont families/residents than students).

Off-Campus Housing: University apartments, small houses, and nicer apartments the further away from campus you go.

2 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Aside from athletes (maybe you'll meet a foreign one if you're lucky), there is a small group of Greek wanna-be frat and sorority types (reminds me of high school) who fill up the front area of the Setzer Center. Then there are the older age commuters, the odd-balls, the kids who will always live within a mile radius from their parents, and a mix between country and ghetto (mostly ghetto). Never have seen so many anti-social or socially awkward people in my life. Quite a culture shock.
