Health & Safety

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: We are having a lot of issues with Title IX and there are many students hoping to change it. Many female students have witnessed, experienced or know someone who has witnessed or experienced sexual assault.

Health & Safety: There is a lot that my college can do about the health and safety of students. Although I do not fully understand the issues of Title IX at my school, I do understand that students who have been sexually assaulted have not been getting the help or justice that they deserve. Students have held many discussions and forums regarding this, but administration has yet to step up to the plate. We may rank forth in reports of sexual assaults, but that is nothing to pride ourselves over if we do not even try to handle the actual situations of sexual assault appropriately and respectfully to the victims of assault.

Health & Safety: Whenever there is a suspicious activity, the students would report to the campus safety right away. Then the campus safety would send out emails about the suspicious activity after they contacted the local police. They also patrol the area to make sure things are okay. I have not feel threatened when living on campus.

Health & Safety: Knox is a pretty safe place, there are lots of resources for students to use, such as the Guardian App, to increase their safety. If you are on or near campus and do not feel comfortable walking somewhere you can call campus safety and they will give you a ride. I've never known anybody to use it because they were nervous about walking somewhere but rather when they are too lazy to walk home late at night. The campus is small so its easy to get places quickly. That all being said its not in a great part of town and we had some incidents in the fall with people from Galesburg coming onto campus and harassing students. The police in the community really like the college and take any incident very seriously. The other major safety concern is South street. If you live in the on-campus apartments you have to cross the South St. to get to the dorms and if you are female you will be cat called about half the time. There is no danger beyond the cat calling but it does not make for the safest environment. This is something the school is actively working with the Galesburg community to find solutions to.

Health & Safety: I feel relatively safe on campus as a male, but I know when it comes to female students on campus they, usually, do not. Female students are constantly cat called by people driving by, and , sometimes, are approached directly.

Also this year a female student was physically harmed by a man who did not live on campus. This further demonstrates that more safety measures have to be called upon for the students.

Another incident that occurred was the breaking in of students dormitories. I believe as a school there are many things that we need to change so that the student body, specifically the women on campus, are as safe as a man would feel.
