Drug Safety

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: As there is nothing but cornfields around, the only thing to do on most weekends is drink. So usage is rife throughout this campus.

Drug Safety: Alcohol is by far the most prevalent drug, but weed is also very popular on campus. I've also seen people doing cocaine and adderall, but they are less common. Although there is a lot of drinking and drug usage that occurs at Kenyon, I wouldn't consider it to be excessive, especially compared to other college campuses. Furthermore, Kenyon does a good job of promoting healthy drinking practices.

Drug Safety: Many students do choose to drink, but I have not encountered any peer pressure at Kenyon. There are definitely students who choose not to drink, and they still seem to have fun/feel comfortable socializing without drinking.

Drug Safety: Kenyon is known as a "hip" school, which is synonymous with drug use. While drug use is definitely popular, it's not in-your-face or obtrusive if it's not your thing. Smoking is the most common, but you can find other drugs if you look for them.

Drug Safety: The campus police won't call the real police or convict you of a felony or anything, they just confiscate it and make you do community service, which I think is great because they are protecting students but not ruining their lives by putting drug convictions on permanent legal records.

Kenyon’s remote location and general affluence have not fostered a hard-core drug scene. This doesn't mean that there isn't any drug use on campus; pot and prescription drugs are popular. Pot is easy to find on campus, and many students indulge to de-stress. Students tend to smoke mostly on the weekends, when it won't interfere with other activities. Pot smoking also takes a back seat to the most popular drug on campus: alcohol. Parties with alcohol happen every week. Students are known to seriously overindulge, and binge drinking is becoming more popular. In general, students don't get in trouble for alcohol use, though.

Kenyon students are true geeks in that the most prevalent drug use probably comes around finals time. Ritalin and Adderall become two of the most sought-after items on campus, as students seek to enhance their study abilities and increase their grades. Hard drugs sometimes find users among the Kenyon community, but this is few and far in between. There generally isn’t any trouble with the law over such matters, since it isn't spoken about within the community. There isn’t a large amount of policing drug activity on campus, either. Generally, if students get caught, it’s for being stupid with their drug use (e.g., smoking pot in the dorm rooms and setting off the smoke alarm).
