Transportation: Really Rural – Just wish there were a cheaper and more convenient way to get to Columbus on weekends and especially during the holiday season!

Campus Food: Usually Good – The food at Pierce hall is usually good, and nothing is super disappointing usually. Outside of Pierce, Middle Ground and the Deli provide alternates, if you're really not feeling the given menu that day.

Off-Campus Dining: Few Choices in Town – In the immediate town of Gambier there are only a few places to eat. Each of these places provides excellent food and, although expensive, allow one to use their K-Card, or student Id, so that students do not have to pay in cash. In the nearby town of Mount Vernon there are many options for students to choose from, including an array of fast food joints and some local dinners and restaurants. There will also be a Chipotle coming this winter.

Campus Quality: Great Gym, Need a New Library – As a whole Kenyon has a beautiful campus and provides many good places for students to meet and work. Of the facilities provided, Kenyon's athletic center and cafeteria are the most up-to-date and enjoyable. The Kenyon Athletic Center (KAC) provides space for any activity, from basketball to squash, and contains novel features such as a snack bar that serves sushi and an auditorium. In lue of a student center Kenyon has its dining hall that, due to the lax food policy, serves as a student meeting place as well. The major fault in Kenyon's facilities is the library, it is out of date and does not hold up to the level of many other places on campus.

Athletics: Many people are involved at athletics at Kenyon, whether varsity or not. Our swimming program is outstanding, and many of the other teams do very well. Kenyon has an amazing recreational facility that allows for any and all people to get involved in athletics. While fan support may not be the greatest at Kenyon, everyone here loves the school.

Diversity: A Friendly Place – Kenyon is one of the most accepting and friendly places I have ever been. People are accepted for being themselves. People are appreciated for being open-minded. There is a place here for everyone.

Local Area: The Gambier Community – I wouldn't consider Gambier a town or a city. It is a community. The fact that Kenyon makes up most of the town makes for a great student-driven, academic, and social atmosphere. It also doesn't hurt that everyone here is incredibly friendly. While we might seem like we're isolated in the middle of nowhere, civilization is just 5 minutes down the road in Mt. Vernon, and if you really need and urban fix, Columbus is less than an hour's drive away.

Party Scene: Completely centered on drinking alcohol. If someone doesn't drink alcohol, they are left out and have nothing to do. Getting drunk is the main source of entertainment.

Campus Quality: Academics, Small Size, Rural Atmosphere – The size and makeup of the school are extremely unique and friendly.

Transportation: Walking Campus – Mostly walking, with long-distance transport options available

3 College Senior

Transportation: Gambier being Gambier, there will inevitably be a time when you need to go to Mount Vernon (the closest 'big' town) for necessities. Kenyon is great about providing a shuttle to and from Mount Vernon at no cost to students, though it is only available on some days. You might want to bring your car if you imagine going to Columbus, but be prepared to park it FAR, FAR away.

3 College Senior

Campus Housing: Variety Is the Spice of Life – While all Freshmen live on the Freshmen quad, there are options for upperclassmen for every taste and budget, from traditional residence halls to more independent living style apartments geared towards seniors.

Weather: Deceptively Beautiful – Kenyon weather is the best in the country for the first three weeks and last three weeks of the school year. For everything in between, we barely see the sun. Students get seasonal affective (sp?) disorder all the time...and know that it's coming.

2 College Sophomore

Athletics: Hit or Miss – Some sports at Kenyon are jokes. Other sports at Kenyon are extremely serious and feature highly talented teams. Either way, the students don't really go to the home games in large numbers.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: Being that our school is a) very expensive, b) in the middle of a very white state, and c) a small liberal arts college, it is not surprising that there are extremely few non-international minority students here. Those who do come here are overwhelmingly accepted, and the school does get a large amount of international students to come here as well, which leads to improved diversity and cultural understanding. However, the fundamental elements of Kenyon College make it very hard to attract minority applicants.

Transportation: It's hard to get off-campus unless you take the shuttle, but the shuttle runs 3 times a week and goes to Mt. Vernon, where you can find Wal-Mart and other stores.

Campus Quality: Kenyon's facilities are beautiful. Every building is clean, looks new or has been restored, and has a lot of daylight. The athletics center (the KAC) is gorgeous and by far the most impressive building on campus. Kenyon's new art gallery has just opened this week and is superb. Every building is a joy to be in, perhaps with the exception of the library, which is a bit older-- but in general the buildings are awesome and still represent Kenyon's gothic history.

3 College Freshman

Technology: Computer labs are easy to access. The computers themselves are of mediocre quality but work well if you just want to get work done. Printing on campus is free, which is very useful. The network at Kenyon is slow. I often can't connect to the websites I want to go to. For this reason I would deem it unreliable. Most people bring personal computers-- it is pretty necessary here. Having your own printer certainly doesn't hurt because you have to walk a long way to collect printed items. (Printers are far from the dorms)!

Diversity: Average... Could Be Better – There is a significant amount of geographic diversity (lots of international students etc.) and lots of different interests and passions among the student body. However, it is still predominantly upper-middle class white students....

Campus Food: Kenyon is probably one of the last places in the country where you can walk in any time (as many times as you want!) and eat without having to verify your identity or pay. This creates a really close-knit community, as everyone is on the full meal plan for all four years and therefore uses the dining hall everyday. The food itself is amazing - mostly local, with lots of options for vegans and vegetarians.

Health & Safety: Very Safe – There is nothing to worry about on Kenyon's campus. We are up on an isolated hill, and our town only has a few thousand people, so there aren't too many people to bother us. Sometimes there is a crazy murderer on campus (true story- Spring 2011) from the town nearby, but that only happens every once in a while, and security responds with lightening speed!

4 College Freshman

Technology: Wireless Access – the wireless access is wonderful here, I sometimes have a bit of trouble connecting, but I never have trouble once I am connected.

Majors: You Do What You Want! Here at Kenyon...its relatively easy to get into the classes you want, and I feel like you can really do whatever you want. Its great that you don't have to declare until the end of your Sophomore year because then you really have the time to decide what you really want to do.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Do You Want Professors That Care? Then Kenyon's the PLACE for you! Honestly--if you take the time to just talk to your professor and to get to know him or her it can become a very rewarding relationship as they want to know how you are doing--and not just in their class--how you are doing in your life at Kenyon. I've always felt comfortable going to my professors and just talking to them if I ever had a problem.

Local Area: Kenyon is set in a beautiful, quaint little town where students can thrive as we gather for coffee or lunch at the Middle Grounds Cafe or just go for a walk down Middle Path. Gambier also has a small Amish market of sorts on Saturdays throughout the year if I remember right--and its definitely worth a look! I LOVE Gambier because it is Home, and I can't imagine calling any other place home. Yeah--there may not be tons to do, but there is easy access to nearby Mt. Vernon on the shuttle and Columbus and Cleveland are 1hour to 2 hours away.

Kenyon College is a small school in rural Ohio. Located in the middle of cornfields, "remote" doesn't even begin to describe its location. Gambier consists of one block with a convenience store, bookstore, and two restaurants; the nearest Walmart is 15 minutes away by bus, and the local movie theater has only two screens. For all of its location flaws, the College has a certain charm. Kenyon wasn't named the "most beautiful college campus in the world" for nothing. Those who step onto the campus are immediately awed by the Gothic architecture, landscaped lawns, and inviting atmosphere.

Part of Kenyon's charm is that it attracts students who really want to be there, rather than those who want the location or name. Students bond over the remote location as much as they do over living in the dorms for four years or dining in the only dining hall on campus. This leads to a cohesive student body that's willing to shape the College it attends. Student groups on campus are very active in the life of the College, and many decisions are put to an all-campus vote.
