Transportation: It's hard to get off-campus unless you take the shuttle, but the shuttle runs 3 times a week and goes to Mt. Vernon, where you can find Wal-Mart and other stores.

Campus Quality: Kenyon's facilities are beautiful. Every building is clean, looks new or has been restored, and has a lot of daylight. The athletics center (the KAC) is gorgeous and by far the most impressive building on campus. Kenyon's new art gallery has just opened this week and is superb. Every building is a joy to be in, perhaps with the exception of the library, which is a bit older-- but in general the buildings are awesome and still represent Kenyon's gothic history.

Technology: Computer labs are easy to access. The computers themselves are of mediocre quality but work well if you just want to get work done. Printing on campus is free, which is very useful. The network at Kenyon is slow. I often can't connect to the websites I want to go to. For this reason I would deem it unreliable. Most people bring personal computers-- it is pretty necessary here. Having your own printer certainly doesn't hurt because you have to walk a long way to collect printed items. (Printers are far from the dorms)!

Diversity: Average... Could Be Better – There is a significant amount of geographic diversity (lots of international students etc.) and lots of different interests and passions among the student body. However, it is still predominantly upper-middle class white students....

Campus Food: Kenyon is probably one of the last places in the country where you can walk in any time (as many times as you want!) and eat without having to verify your identity or pay. This creates a really close-knit community, as everyone is on the full meal plan for all four years and therefore uses the dining hall everyday. The food itself is amazing - mostly local, with lots of options for vegans and vegetarians.

Health & Safety: Very Safe – There is nothing to worry about on Kenyon's campus. We are up on an isolated hill, and our town only has a few thousand people, so there aren't too many people to bother us. Sometimes there is a crazy murderer on campus (true story- Spring 2011) from the town nearby, but that only happens every once in a while, and security responds with lightening speed!

Technology: Wireless Access – the wireless access is wonderful here, I sometimes have a bit of trouble connecting, but I never have trouble once I am connected.

Majors: You Do What You Want! Here at Kenyon...its relatively easy to get into the classes you want, and I feel like you can really do whatever you want. Its great that you don't have to declare until the end of your Sophomore year because then you really have the time to decide what you really want to do.

Academics: Do You Want Professors That Care? Then Kenyon's the PLACE for you! Honestly--if you take the time to just talk to your professor and to get to know him or her it can become a very rewarding relationship as they want to know how you are doing--and not just in their class--how you are doing in your life at Kenyon. I've always felt comfortable going to my professors and just talking to them if I ever had a problem.

Local Area: Kenyon is set in a beautiful, quaint little town where students can thrive as we gather for coffee or lunch at the Middle Grounds Cafe or just go for a walk down Middle Path. Gambier also has a small Amish market of sorts on Saturdays throughout the year if I remember right--and its definitely worth a look! I LOVE Gambier because it is Home, and I can't imagine calling any other place home. Yeah--there may not be tons to do, but there is easy access to nearby Mt. Vernon on the shuttle and Columbus and Cleveland are 1hour to 2 hours away.

Majors: What's So Major About a Major? At Kenyon, it seems that asking someone's major is more about popular convention than it is to actually determine something about them. It seems that most people at Kenyon kind of fall into their majors, somewhat unexpectedly. I believe this is because Kenyon doesn't offer any "practical" majors, and focuses more on an academic approach than a practical one. Not being an Economics major myself, but having many friends in that field, I have heard that our Econ department is very theoretical, and barely practical. And yet, our Econ majors typically get amazing job offers, probably because of the other abilities Kenyon has taught them. At Kenyon, it really doesn't matter what your major is, because what you are there for is to expand your mind, learn to write like a pro, and most importantly, learn a lot about yourself and your passions along the way.

Academics: It's All About the Professors – Kenyon's professors, in my mind, are second to none. I have not met a professor who is unwilling to meet with students, and more often than not, professors invite students into their homes, out for coffee, or for a walk down middlepath, just to chat. This is why I chose Kenyon, and I have not been disappointed. If you want a college where professors care about individual students, make time to meet with you outside of class, and help you in any way they can to make your college experience your own, then look no further than Kenyon College.

Local Area: True College Immersion---Stuck on a Hill – Kenyon College is located on the top of a very picturesque hill, lined with trees and surrounded by nature and farms. It is rare for students to leave this hill (other than for a Wal-Mart run) during the school year. This fosters a very close-knit community between students, faculty, and staff members. The campus bookstore and market are go-to shopping places, while Middleground (a cafe),The Village Inn (a bar/restaurant), and the Gambier Deli (obviously, a deli) are alternative dining options to our one dining hall, Peirce. Because students are quite isolated from the outside world, Kenyon has a plethora of student groups, and our Social Board works all year to provide students with entertainment options on the weekends. While there is definitely a party culture at Kenyon, during the daylight hours you typically find students in class or in their favorite study locations. Overall, I believe that Kenyon's environment is very conducive to both an academic and social atmosphere, and what it lacks in franchise chains (such as the staple Jimmy John's or Chipotle on most other college campuses), it makes up for in small-town charm. However, Kenyon's atmosphere is not for everyone, so I strongly recommend visiting campus before enrolling.

Local Area: Quaint Village, Simplistic Living, Much Like Summer Camp – I came to Kenyon because I loved the small size and country atmosphere--a learning oasis. While it can sometimes be a struggle to obtain certain necessities (some toiletries, etc.) because of the limited resources available, I find myself spending much less money than I do during holiday breaks. I also find that the simplicity of the atmosphere makes for a tighter-knit community and more fun in general, similar to a sleep-away summer camp.

Guys & Girls: Smart People, Good Atmosphere – I'd say a very large portion if not every single person on campus is amazingly interesting in their own way. Some people know lots about literature; some speak lots of languages; some people play in every music group on campus. Everybody's got something to say. As far as looks go, fashion-wise people do what they want. As long as you're comfortable with how you look and act, nobody'll ride you about it.

Health & Safety: Never Felt Safer – I haven't ever felt unsafe at Kenyon, in Gambier, or in the surrounding countryside. Campus Safety is always more than willing to come help you out, and even when there were emergencies they were well-prepared with plans and with getting information across campus. With parties, Campus Safety generally will just tell you to pour out your drinks if you're underage- but don't hassle them, they really don't like that. They're here to help you and everyone else.

2 College Sophomore

Administration: The Sheriff in town is known to be strict about underage drinking, but only when that drinking is done on the streets or you end up in the hospital for it. I've known kids who wake up in the hospital with a ticket from the sheriff left on their side table. I've known lots of kids who have gotten a 'talking to' about getting caught with alcohol in their rooms, but no one usually gets in too much trouble for that since it is a wet campus.

Technology: Plenty Except During Finals – There are always open computers all over campus. It is difficult to find one during finals time. I would suggest bringing one as a personal preference to socialize.

Party Scene: All Options on Campus – There's really only one bar in town, and it isn't too great. However, because this is the case everyone still goes there, and the people are what makes or breaks the night. People don't go off campus to party but that's nice because you get to see a lot of people and no one really worries about drinking and driving or getting a ride home.

Athletics: Academic More Than Athletic – Outside of the swim team, at Kenyon most varsity athletics aren't that good in terms of skill. We are a Division 3 school and that shows. But some of the smartest people I know here are athletes, which I wasn't expecting but really appreciate. Kenyon gives you an opportunity to be on a team, but not a competitive team when compared with large public universities. The one exception is our swim team, which dominates Division 3 nationally and can hold its own with even the larger schools.

Scholarships: Because Kenyon is very selective, only the cream of the crop tend to get scholarships.

Financial aid for me went somewhat smoothly and the aid helped, but I didn't recieve as much as I needed. I suggest talking with the financial aid office in person about all of the necessary forms and possible outside scholarships. Also keep in mind that the aid will fluctuate year to year.

Diversity: Though Kenyon is primarily white and upper-middle class, but the tight community and huge diversity in interests makes up for it. Coming from a high school overseas with tons of ethnic and racial diversity, I was very impressed with the mix of people. There are some international students, and they hold a lot of programs to raise awareness about different cultures. Because we are a small school there is not a very big LGBT population, but there are some student groups that provide an outlet to meet other LGBT students. Overall, don't expect to see a lot of diversity here, as most small liberal arts schools across the country would tell you. Know, though, that there are definitely pockets of economic, ethnic, and racial diversity when you look for it.

Overall Experience: Couldn't Have Made a Better Decision – I cannot imagine myself anywhere besides Kenyon. It is a place where people push themselves beyond their limits and rejoice in that ability. Professors are the kindest people you will ever meet, research opportunities are wonderful, even for freshmen! Ohio is gorgeous, and Kenyon is a positive, loving community.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Kenyon is a school for the academic elite. The workload is challenging, but the professors make you want to work hard to please them. Competition among students is not at all cutthroat. Check out the third floor of Ascension Hall for a great (and silent!) study spot.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Casual Dating Doesn't Exist – At Kenyon, you are either practically married to someone or you are constantly moving from one random hookup to another. Typical students dress up for class (no sweatpants!) and keep weekend parties casual. Many students are artsy, but there is a core group of varsity athletes who support each other. Swimmers are gorgeous AND talented!

Kenyon College is a small school in rural Ohio. Located in the middle of cornfields, "remote" doesn't even begin to describe its location. Gambier consists of one block with a convenience store, bookstore, and two restaurants; the nearest Walmart is 15 minutes away by bus, and the local movie theater has only two screens. For all of its location flaws, the College has a certain charm. Kenyon wasn't named the "most beautiful college campus in the world" for nothing. Those who step onto the campus are immediately awed by the Gothic architecture, landscaped lawns, and inviting atmosphere.

Part of Kenyon's charm is that it attracts students who really want to be there, rather than those who want the location or name. Students bond over the remote location as much as they do over living in the dorms for four years or dining in the only dining hall on campus. This leads to a cohesive student body that's willing to shape the College it attends. Student groups on campus are very active in the life of the College, and many decisions are put to an all-campus vote.
