Party Scene: I am in the Southerners and we all get to know each other very well. With there being 450 of us, we can party pretty hard.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: Some places are good, but others aren't at all. Students work at most of the campus food places, and they are sloppy and sometimes don't cook the food correctly.

2 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The campus housing is just old and dirty. There is hardly any space for two girls to live in one room. It's just crowded. Everything needs to be rebuilt.

College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: I stayed on campus, and I don't know much about the off campus housing availability. I do know that there were options close in proximity to the campus and public transportation.

Off-Campus Dining: I never ate at any off campus dining. I usually stuck around campus. I do know that there were quite a few places close to the campus.

Administration: The administration at JSU is pretty good. There are many nice faces, and they give you utmost respect as long as you do the same for them. The administration follow the rules and carry out the rules the way they should, and they care deeply for the students on and off campus.

Scholarships: I only earned one Scholarship at JSU and that was the Gem of the Hills Scholarship. There are many Scholarships available though. A good many of them are good scholarships that will pay a good bit for what you need.

Party Scene: I never actually went to a party. I preferred to keep in my studies rather than party. However, my friends would go to the Southerners parties, and they always seem to have had fun there. I enjoy hearing there stories about their time at the party, the next day.

Campus Food: The food is good when you know where to go, and where to eat. Not all of the food in the Jack Hopper dining hall is good, but most of it is. The flex dollars are great, especially when you want to eat over at the food court in the TMB. When I was at JSU last year I stopped there almost every morning to get a Cik Filet biscuit before class. There was a good variety of food at the dining hall. Overall the campus food services are great.

Campus Housing: Housing at JSU is pretty great. I stayed there last year as a Freshman. I got to look at the other dorms as well, when visiting friends. I especially liked Ivo Sparkman Hall, and the Stadium dorms. The dorm I stayed in was pretty good for what you would expect of a Freshman dorm. It as in close proximity of all my classes, there was a good social atmosphere. The staff was nice and well tempered, and they kept good regulations of the rules. The staff also kept the dorm as clean as possible.

Off-Campus Dining: There are a decent number of places to eat and visit. If you come from a big city you probably wont be liking Jacksonville too much.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Don't even try to get away with anything in Logan Hall. After you spend 30 minutes typing in your long code then scanning your hand then showing them the little house saying you live there you can forget even having a visitor.

2 College Sophomore

Scholarships: There is like 150 Gold decal spots(faculty) to 5 teachers and like 7 student parking to 5,000 students.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Not even sure how to answer this?

Campus Food: I ate Chick-Fil-A for 3 months straight.

Campus Housing: I lived in Logan Hall, the girls freshman dorm. Alot nicer than the other freshman dorms. Private bathrooms, spacious. Very old. Had problems with mold and mildew. No vent in the bathroom caused that problem, but back in the day they didn't put those in. Overall it was a good experience. Good walk to all the classes except Stone. Easier than commuter parking.

Off-Campus Housing: There is a great variance in housing quality, but generally apartments in the area are reasonably priced and near campus.

Athletics: Our football team is marginal, but a lot of the school's money and effort goes into athletic programs.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: Teachers in the science department can be very hit or miss. Generally the biology department is very nice, though.

Greek Life: Greek life itself is pretty big, but there have been some issues with the fraternities and their treatment of women. Other than that the people in organizations are treated well. They don't treat people outside of the bubble so well, though...

Guys & Girls: The typical student is just that, typical. As an "alternative" type of student (piercings, dyed hair) I do get treated as less by the general student body. I assume it's because the average student dresses in name brand clothes and clings more to the "Greek" style. Social life is generally comprised of college parties and binge drinking, so that's mostly what you'll find students talking about.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Cost can be low if you settle for a chain restaurant, same for convenience. Student discounts are only available at a few places, but there is a pretty wide variety (a few Asian places, Italian, and Mexican food). As a vegetarian, I do need to be careful where I go!

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: There's a bit of disparity between the quality in the various buildings, if you don't want to pay extra (in addition to your housing scholarship) you're going to be stuck in an old, and kinda nasty, building. Living closer to one another can be a good thing, until it comes time to study, etc.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: As I vegetarian I do wish there were more options, but for an average student the food is good. If you aren't using your meal plan it can get expensive, though.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I received a full tuition scholarship and was promised much more; however, I have to check back with the scholarship office to actually make sure I get the aid because my account doesn't reflect it and I end up having to pay for things my adviser said I would have.

The first time you wander around campus at Jacksonville State University and feel the sun shining through the trees, you will begin to understand what it means to be a JSU Gamecock. It is a mix of old Southern charm and a wide new world of possibilities. It is a new world of wearing the game day crimson and cheering with your fellow students in the student section at football games and feeling the stadium vibrate with the sound of The Marching Southeners. It is walking through the Quad and staring up at the stone buildings and realizing that this place is more than bricks and stone. It is making friends that last and maybe even finding love.

It is about realizing who you are, who you want to be, and how to get there. It is a journey, not a destination. It is sitting down on the grass with a textbook for the first time in your life and studying, not to please someone else, but because you have realized that you want greatness, you want to be the best you can be for you. Your professors are interested in you. They won't pass you unless you deserve it, but they are there to help you succeed. For the faculty and staff, from the president to cashiers and custodians, friendliness is a mainstay. They always have a smile for students. You will be accepted for you. This place has deep roots and a wide open sky, tradition and possibilities. You write your story, and JSU is a great place to start.
