Campus Housing: I really like the campus housing. The towers are my favorite place to live. All of the dorms are a good size and are very clean.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: There seem to be an okay amount of parties at Ithaca. I see a lot of them occur over the weekend for the most part.

Off-Campus Housing: I don't live off campus, but my best friends do. It seems like it's an awesome time. Depends on what street you live on, though. If you live on Hudson, you're set for an amazing time. The town is a 2 minute walk, the parties are usually on that block, and its super close to the bars!

Administration: It really depends where you live, who's in your building, what teachers you have, what you have done etc. It ALL depends.

Local Area: The local area is amazing. It's beautiful, clean and is fun! The only complaint is that the Townies are creepy. They are weird, especially at night. Other than that, there is SOO much to do off campus...its overwhelming. There's cornell, stores, the mall, the gorges...etc. It's really amazing here.

Off-Campus Dining: Lots of great restaurants. Super yummy spots, classy places. Just make sure you get to the restaurants you want before 5:00 on friday or saturday...they are PACKED.

Party Scene: I have a lot of fun. If you know people, you're set. I came to Ithaca with knowing no one, besides some girls I met at orientation. Everyone here is super nice and super welcoming. I am a girl, and do not play a sport of any kind. My friends play Basketball, and they manage to go to their sport houses, but also to any other house having a party! It's not cliquey at all, and the houses are welcoming and inviting. On Hudson, in the commons, there are houses that have parties, right next to each other. Each house has a different vibe, so depending on what you're into, you go there! If you don't have a fake ID or aren't 21...it's really hard to stay out later than 12:00 if your down in the commons. EVERYONE's destination after parties, are the bars. I have a fake ID, and manage to go to parties, pre game, socialize and have fun, and then I always end up at the bars, meeting a lot of people and having the best time! There are 2 really fun bars- Moonies, and 2floor. Moonies is more for the upperclassmen, and 2floor is definitely more "ratchet" and clubby like. Both are super fun though! I'm super unbiased. I have friends from all different majors, all different cliques and I have experienced parties from every end of the spectrum while i've been here. All the parties are fun/funnish; my best advice is MAKE SURE YOU GET A FAKE ID OR ARE 21, bc unfortunately you're social life can do down the drain if you don't have one....

Greek Life: We don't have Greek Life at Ithaca College, but if you want to go to a Greek party go to Cornell! I hear it's a ton of fun, whether you're a boy or a girl!

Local Area: I actually plan on transferring out of the school because I can't take how isolated the town is anymore; if you're into a college town life in a rural area, then you're gold. The food is good and there are frequent activities/fairs in town and most students really like it. It's just incredibly difficult to take the bus there because the system is really screwed up. Shopping is mediocre, there's a mall but the only good stores there are American eagle and target, there's also stores like urban outfitters and wegmans in the town but you have to travel at least an hour to find any real high-end labels.

Campus Housing: the entire campus is on a friggin mountain, anywhere you pick you're going to end up with the famous "ithacalves" and highly exhausted and tired and sweaty by the time you climb back up to the dorm after class. the Towers go up to a 13th floor and the elevator breaks every 2 weeks. if you're a freshman in the quads, you need to be in the right hall because it's either a hit or miss with the people you're with. I hang out in my friend's dorm more than my own because hers is fun and lighthearted and everyone knows everyone, whereas mine is quiet and distant and no one talks to anyone else. The housing process is a lottery so if you get a number really high, you're basically screwed. But the party scene is usually circles, terraces, or upper quads. Everywhere other than lower quads, as a communications major, is inconvenient.

Party Scene: Generally, there are like no actual good parties here, and if there is one, it's small. Everyone goes to Cornell for any real fun. Parties are a great way to let loose and it's a shame that Ithaca can't have them because the campus is so small that any noise is caught immediately and the party is busted. A lot of parties, ithaca and cornell both, are invite-only so you need to know the right people, or have easy access to alcohol or drugs to be useful enough to be invited and befriended

Administration: Attendance in classes is incredibly important - I have one class where if you miss more than 2 classes, it's 10% off your grade. They take that really seriously. Campus safety is pretty lenient with alcohol if they see you drinking it, if you just pour it out and don't make a scene or be aggressive and it's your first strike they'll let you go. Just don't be obnoxious about it in dorms and your RA won't have to report you. Weed is extremely popular and they're pretty strict with that but that doesn't stop people from smoking it every day.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I'm a freshman and I don't know any people who live off-campus

3 College Freshman

Athletics: Personally, I don't care about the football team or other athletics. But i do know that the school spirit here sucks because we're always overshadowed and put down by Cornell

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: they have these emergency posts with a blue light on them around campus that you press a button if you're in trouble and campus security comes. I see the campus police around sometimes, but their presence isn't excessive. I walk back to the dorm alone from the library at 3 am frequently and I feel really safe, just because the crime rate is so low and the odds of being "attacked" or "assaulted" seem microscopic basically.

2 College Freshman

Greek Life: It's technically not allowed but there are "underground" sororities and fraternities but they're really lame and have a bad reputation for having ugly weird people

2 College Sophomore

Campus Food: all the food is the same. no flavor

3 College Senior

Scholarships: be persistent with calling the financial aid office

5 College Senior

Off-Campus Dining: lots of different places and cuisines to choose from, all close and conveniently located

4 College Junior

Local Area: Ithaca is great, the town is awesome and everyone is really chill and hippy-like. Cornell is literally across the hill and it's one big college town.

Administration: They're not too strict at all, as long as you're smart and don't do anything really stupid, you'll get along just fine.

4 College Junior

Health & Safety: I am a girl and I feel just as safe at midnight as I do at noon. My friends and I have never had a problem on campus and have never felt in danger.

3 College Junior

Party Scene: It's mostly friends who party together -- you have to know someone to get in and really have fun. If you want a big party and you're a girl, go to Cornell

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: There are sooooo many different places to eat in Ithaca! It's great -- I love CTB and Viva.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

When students are asked to evaluate their overall experience at IC, they often look at the lessons they learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go beyond the social aspect of college and get involved end up both gaining the most experience and having the most fun. Many students love IC because of its size. Sometimes, it’s hard to walk anywhere on campus without bumping into someone you know. With such dreadfully cold winters, the academic programs and well-organized student groups are the main reasons students come back every year. Also, the great size allows students to connect with other students in their majors and their professors/advisers, as well.

Like many things in life, students’ experiences with IC are simply what they make of them. If you sit in your dorm room for four years, you will be miserable. If you experience the life Ithaca has to offer and go outside of your comfort zone, you most likely won’t regret your decision to attend IC. The school’s high retention rate proves this. IC offers a great mix of academics and everything else college life should offer—friends, fun, professional opportunities, active campus life, and a time to learn and grow.
