"Move the chains! Touchdown Pirates!" The announcer at every home game announces this after our football has scored. With our university mascot the Pirate and our school colors being reflex blue and white, our athletics are certainly a force to be reckoned with. Athletics is important to student life and alumni. During Homecoming, there is a thick atmosphere of pride and excitement for the football game, which is usually against our rival school, Howard. Students, alumni, faculty, and administration can be seen sporting Greek or Hampton paraphernalia. Football is tackled in Armstrong Stadium and basketball is slam-dunked in our Convocation Center.
Hampton Pirates athletics offers six varsity sports for men and eight for women. There has a been a slight decline in school spirit, but gradually it is restoring to what it once was. For recreational purposes, the Holland Gymnasium and Student Center are available for students to use on a daily basis for exercise and pastimes. The Student Center even has a bowling alley!
