Student Body

{{ error }}
3 College Junior

Student Body: There is not much diversity at my school because of the location of the campus

5 College Sophomore

Student Body: A vast amount of people come to this school, including working adults.

4 College Sophomore

Student Body: The student body is pretty diverse, often you might find yourself sitting next to someone from another country. So it is interesting because you get to learn things about other peoples cultures.

4 College Junior

Student Body: I do not interact with the student body, so I do not know

3 College Student

Student Body: The student body is not really very social with each other, a lot of people are more focused on going to class and focusing on their career nothing else, and going home when done with their work. The ones who are social don't seem to have a career or goal oriented focus, or can be quite disruptive and obnoxious.

Germanna has a relatively large population of younger students who were home-schooled or are older, returning students who have families and full-time jobs. But, most students fall into three categories: those who want to complete an associate’s degree to find a higher-paying job, those who want to complete an associate’s and transfer to a four-year university, and those who simply want to stay on their parent's insurance policies. Most Germanna students are very welcoming and friendly and easy to talk to, and making friends isn't very difficult. The general student body embraces international and minority students, and many new students say they are surprised by how accepting Germanna's students are. This surprise comes because although the city of Fredericksburg is liberal, the surrounding areas have a bit of a conservative bent and tend to be less-than-accepting of minorities.

Overall, the College’s atmosphere is tolerant, friendly, and safe, and like every school, Germanna has its fair share of individualists. Some students try to wear bikini tops to class, some look like Luigi from the Mario Bros. video games, and some dress as seemingly arbitrary characters, like Hunter S. Thompson. Germanna students are clearly trying to find themselves and embrace a college student’s privilege to experiment. Students here often laugh at being in "13th grade" and complain about dealing with all of the drama associated with being in high school, but most are pleased with the student body and are happy to be studying here.

Typical Peers
Most Germanna students are friendly, open, and fun-loving people who enjoy talking in the hallways and hanging out with friends a little bit more than they enjoy studying. The student body includes people who were home-chooled under rigorous Christian curricula, students who barely passed high school, over-achievers headed for prestigious universities, students still figuring out what they want to do with their lives, people studying for Career Certificate programs, and older working adults who have returned to school after long breaks. Basically, Germanna welcomes students from every socioeconomic, academic, and professional background, so making friends isn't difficult.

Student Organizations
The Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa, Psi Beta, and Students Helping Honduras are the most active student organizations on campus. Germanna's Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta chapters are part of the international honor societies that recognize highly motivated students, and they recruit new members each semester. Other clubs include anime club, step team, and art club. Germanna also has basketball, cheerleading, and dance teams, though many students are surprised to learn about them because only a few students are involved in sports.

Starting a new club isn't exceptionally difficult. Students must petition the dean of Student Affairs for permission to form the new club and must have a faculty adviser who is willing to monitor the organization's activities.

Did You Know?
  • A good percentage of the student population at Germanna is still in high school and is completing college courses through dual enrollment.
  • Many students smoke by the entrances of the buildings, much to the non-smokers' dismays. During the Cigarette Litter Prevention program, Phi Theta Kappa, the school's honor society, encourages people to "butt out," "watch their butts," smoke only in designated smoking areas, and to dispose of their cigarette butts properly.
