Online Courses

Online Courses: My experience about online classes has taught me the importance of time management. Don't be a procastinator. If you need help reach out to the tutors, they are willing to help you. One other thing I learned don't take more classes than you can handle.

Online Courses: Many courses available online and in person

4 College Senior

Online Courses: I love online courses, because you're able to do the work at any time, as long as it's by the due date. The workload is usually wonderful, and the professors are very helpful, and are usually quick to reply.

Online Courses: There were a few professors who lacked information. And it was hard to point out what you were talking about over email. Not that online classes are bad, (they are convenient) but, I would rather have face to face interactions.

Online Courses: Online courses have a more predictable pace of workload compared to classrooms

Germanna offers a relatively generous selection of online courses and provides at least one online section for the most popular on-campus courses. Every new student is allowed to take one online course with no minimum GPA requirement, but returning students must have at least a 2.0 to be eligible to take online courses. Germanna's online courses are targeted to working students who need flexible study schedules and students who thrive in independent-learning environments. Many say that Germanna’s online courses are best for busy and self-motivated students who learn best without face-to-face instruction. Apart from knowing how to log into Blackboard, students need to possess few computer skills to complete online courses successfully.

In addition to online course sections, Germanna also offers hybrid courses, which combine online and in-person instruction. This option is perfect for anyone who desires the flexibility of online courses and the face-to-face interactions of in-person courses. Unlike classes held on campus, a large percentage of final grades for online sections comes from discussion board participation. So, earning low marks in online courses is easy for students who have the propensities for forgetting to post on the discussion boards. Students who have taken Germanna's online courses overwhelmingly agree that the online course sections are easier than comparable in-person sections, but they warn that falling behind in online classes is much easier than in classes held on campus.

Facts & Statistics

Biggest Surprises
  • Most interaction with other students happens through the online discussion boards.
  • SafeAssign, a variation of, will not accept submissions through Safari, the Apple-run web browser.
Required Tech Skills
Students don't have to be very tech-savvy to complete an online course at Germanna. Being able to check e-mail and follow instructions will suffice.
Typical Online Lecture - Single Day
Instructors typically post lectures at the start of each week. Students then read textbook chapters and lectures, participate in discussion board conversations, and complete assignments. Assignments are usually due on the same day each week, so students are able to budget outside time commitments with coursework without worrying about always-changing assignment due dates.
Typical Online Course - Start to Finish
The instructor will usually post the class syllabus, which includes a detailed course description and list of assignments, roughly one week before the class begins, and he or she will often also post a few typed lectures at this point. Once classes begin, students study the typed lectures, e-mail the instructor with questions, and interact with fellow students in the mandatory discussion board posts, where they talk about the course material.

Most assignments are open-book, open-note, open-Internet and can be completed at home, but students are required to complete at least two proctored activities (usually a midterm and a final) at one of Germanna's testing locations.
Online Testing & Grading
Students must complete two proctored activities during an online course. The remainder of the assignments are usually open-note, open-book, and open-Internet. Group work is discouraged, but teachers have no way of enforcing this rule since the courses are online.
Did You Know?
  • Germanna uses SafeAssign, a Blackboard-run version of, for assignment submissions.
  • When searching for classes, the online course sections have the letter "I" in the course number (e.g. ENG 111-I1 means English 111 online section one).
