When hearing students grumble about Germanna's outdated campuses, it would be logical to assume that the College is stuck in the Stone Age. But this isn't true. Each of Germanna's campuses offers free Wi-Fi to students who bring laptops to campus, and students are allowed to use school-owned Dell desktop computers in the libraries and the Academic Computing Centers. Each campus has a strong Wi-Fi signal with only a few dead zones, and while finding an available desktop computer can be challenging, students frequently take advantage of the free resources.

However, the students' aforementioned grumblings are not without merit. Germanna's IT staff is much kinder to teachers than students, and random Fredericksburg residents hang out at Germanna all day, every day, monopolizing the technology resources for which students must pay. This ruffles more than a few feathers. The same non-students who clog the Academic Computing Center at the Fredericksburg Area Campus (FAC) also frequent the Student Lounge, a dingy room that will soon be renovated by the Student Government Association. The current lounge boasts two TVs equipped with video game controllers, as well as a ping-pong table, which students and non-students use to conduct tournaments. Unfortunately, because Germanna has no on-site athletic facilities, the school’s only organized team—basketball—must practice at the Bragg Hill Family Life Center, so games are not school-wide events. In fact, five words can sum up Germanna’s athletic department: “We have a basketball team?”

Campus Events/Traditions
  • Campus Career Day: One of Germanna's career counselors organizes an afternoon career fair each semester. During the fair, students are able to speak with potential employers and figure out what they need to do to be hired. New students are usually overwhelmed by the surge of activity, and many students are caught off guard by the lack of parking. The date of the fair is released early in the semester. So find it, write it down, and remember it-it's worth it!
  • Movie Night: Held outside at Locust Grove Campus (LGC), Movie Night allows students to unwind, relax, and enjoy a movie with their friends and fellow students. The Student Government Association sends out a survey a few weeks before Movie Night to poll students on which movie they'd like to see. The most popular one is chosen and projected onto a screen at LGC.
  • Spring Fling: Every spring, the Student Government Association throws a big party for students with food and entertainment. This is a great way for students to meet one another and to hang out before finals. Spring Fling also showcases all of the campus clubs.
Unique Features
Free tutoring: Each Germanna student is eligible for two hours of free one-on-one tutoring and an unlimited number of math, Spanish, or writing labs per week. Each student is also given an account with Smarthinking, a 24/7 online tutoring service that will help edit papers, complete math problems, or whatever else the student needs help with.

Did You Know?
  • Germanna doesn't charge students to print documents. Students are allowed to print up to 15 pages in the Academic Computing Center (ACC), but they must print larger documents in the library.
  • The College's mascot, the grizzly, was chosen because students usually see at least one black bear at the Locust Grove Campus every year.
  • Students should definitely take advantage of Germanna's online library services, especially because the paper collections are sorely lacking. The online resources include netbooks, journals, academic databases, and newspaper articles.
  • Germanna's Fredericksburg Area Campus is a short drive from the University of Mary Washington (UMW). So some students take advantage of UMW's library and use it to conduct paper research. For a small fee, Fredericksburg area residents can borrow books from the UMW library, even if they aren't UMW students.
