4 College Freshman

Athletics: I've only recently started working out at the PAC, and I very much like the facilities that we have. I haven't participated in any campus sports, though, so I can't speak on that.

3 College Junior

Athletics: Some of the athletic teams on campus are really great, others aren't. I wish students cared more about sports, and could help to create a more exciting game day atmosphere.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: Furman doesn't really have sports spirits...

2 College Sophomore

Athletics: There is absolutely no school spirit at Furman when it comes to sports. If someone tells you otherwise they are lying through their teeth. Intramural sports are big with fraternities but there is no school involvement with athletics and athletes in general are not treated nearly as highly as they are at state schools

3 College Junior

Athletics: Furman students care about academics more than sports.

Furman athletics are not nearly as big as they are at many larger institutions. However, Furman does have several very strong teams. Football gets the most attention on campus and has the best turnout, but the soccer and golf teams are also very competitive. Intramural and club sports have a strong presence on campus with a high level of participation. There seems to be something for all students, whether they are serious about their sport or they are trying it out for the first time.

Students actually seem to get more excited and competitive about their intramural team than varsity sports. Besides football, the majority of students don't attend Furman athletic events. The athletic department is constantly trying to increase student attendance, and students who do go usually end up getting hooked. Furman's teams are great for such a small school; they just need more student support.

Most Popular Sports
Basketball, football, and soccer are the major sporting events on campus. Students attend the games as social events and follow the teams with some regularity.
Most Overlooked Teams
Sports such as volleyball, track and field and tennis often do very well each season but do not gather the hype of the more popular sports such as football and soccer.
School Spirit
While Furman students may not have as much school spirit as students at other schools, most are still full of Furman pride. Most sporting events have low turn-outs, but the football games are the place to be on fall weekends. The fraternity and sorority members usually dress up, and others proudly wear their purple and white. However, we are not the most dedicated fans, as the student section has often emptied by the fourth quarter. But with an acronym like FU, it's not difficult to have school spirit. Students can't wait for the cheerleaders to lead them in their favorite school cheer: "FU one time! FU two times! . . ." Well, you get the idea.
Getting Tickets
All sporting events are free with a Furman ID; otherwise, call (864) 294-3099.
