Scholarships: Very Hard to Recive Aid – Florida State is a huge school with over 80,000 graduate and undergraduate students. I only was able to receive the standard loan which was downsized to an unsubsidized loan with less money when they changed my residency status. I understand that there are many students but financial strain does take a toll.

Parking: Get There Early! There are many parking spaces available, but few near the dorms or classrooms. To get a good parking spot, get there early. As soon as you move your car you will lose your spot. Also, DO NOT park in teacher parking. You will get towed and fined!

Off-Campus Housing: There Are Many Options – There are so many options for choosing an apartments in Tallahassee. The prices depend on how close to the school they are and how nice and new they are. There is also shuttle buses that will take you to your apartments (or as close as they can). Finding one should not be a problem, but finding a nice, cheap one can be.

Administration: They Mean What They Say – The campus police and the dorm security are very stict about the rules and school policies and do not hesitate to implement disciplinary action. The school takes this so serious that the The Florida State University Police shall be notified of all on campus events that are not regularly scheduled that plan to serve alcohol. These are the University State and Local Penalties. Possession or attempt to purchase alcohol by a person under 21 years of age, using a false driver's license ID or allowing someone to use your driver's license for an ID card and providing alcohol to a person under 21 has a typical first time offense resulting in Diversion program; $180 fine; 10 hours community work program with a maximum first time offense of 60 days jail; $500 fine. The biggest thing you can do to protect yourself from disciplinary action is to make sure you do not drink, try to obtain, or serve alcohol to any one under the age of 21.

Drug Safety: FSU although considered to many to be a "party school" has instilled in many the personal responsibility you have to yourself, others and FSU. There is a no tolerance for underage drinking, disorderly conduct, and drug use by the campus police. The majority of parties held on and off campus involve drinking while most do so responsibly, but there are a select few that have pushed the limit but ususally they do not get invited back to parties. There are many activities available that are drug and alcohol free. I feel that both men and women would feel comfortable at FSU and not presseured to partake in such activities.

Scholarships: Fafsa is one of the best ways to get money for college. The application is usually available by January 2nd of each new year for the fall and spring semesters. Finacial aid can also be received for summer classes by applying for the Fafsa summer application. The earlier the application is turned in the better chance one has at receiving aid.

Diversity: FSU has a wide variety of students ranging from white American citizens to international students from China. As one walks the campus it is hard to recognize that much diversity, buts its there. There are many groups and organizations advertised on campus that open awareness about how much diversity there is. Acceptance at FSU is based on GPA and test scores. GPA is a higher teller of acceptance rather than test scores since the school wants to see if you will perform once you are accepted. A average score of both will get one accepted.

Off-Campus Dining: Places to Eat – Burger King which is cheap, but the quality is okay.
Mcdonals which is also cheap, but the quality is average.
Mr. Robotos is a Japanese lunch/dinner restaurant that is between the range of 8-15 dollars.

Scholarships: The out of state tuition is much higher than the in state tuition, and I was offered very little money from the school, as an OS student. That said though, the tuition I am paying is not much higher than similar state schools in the north east (where I am from) for in state tuition.

Overall Experience: My experience at FSU has been simply wonderful! The student body is extremely friendly. The professors are very qualified and are very easy to approach, despite the large class sizes. There is plenty to do on campus. There are 3 dining halls, more than 10 other eating options, a state of the art gym, a massive library, a movie theater, and plenty of sporting events to enjoy, all right on campus. FSU will offer great opportunities and experiences to all.

Local Area: Tallahassee offers plenty of minor attractions since it is the capital of the state, and is also home to Florida State, Florida A&M and Tallahassee Community College. Florida State offers a great balance of strong academics and the relaxation of an excellent party school. Sports fans will love Florida State, with plenty of excitement on campus on gameday. The campus also offers plenty of dining choices and even a movie theater.

Scholarships: Good LUCK! Due to the immense number of studets the financial aid tellers rarely care about who you are or what you need. For what it's worth, there are alot of students who ask too many simple questions and exhaust the workers. Nonetheless, the financial aid office is long and necessary assertiveness is often interpreted incorrectly which leads to full blown aruements. My advice? The website asnwers alot of basic questions and you should probably try to resolve on y our own if you want to save time and a headache. If you absolutely need their assitance because the resources aren't there, approach very repectfully with patience and plenty of time to burn.

Guys & Girls: Fraternities Rule – Unfortunately, The mass majoriy of The FLorida State Univerty's students are involved in fraternities or sororities. These groups only perpetuate stereotypes about greek life and about race in an alarming way. Many kids are "stuck-up" and it is an inigma as to how they entered college, let alone manage to stay enrolled. The school is very diverse though and the small amount who haven't been tainted by greek life are really pleasant at the very least. There are definetly alot of good looking girls ( between 8-10) but, again, they are often stuck up and incredibly immature. There is also a reason why Tallahassee is considered "tallanasty" and "the chlamydia capitol". Sex, Drugs and hip-hop dominate the campus but all in all I suppose it's only a reflection of our youth and naivity.

Technology: Strozier Library – Strozier Library has been recently renovated and as a result the amount of computers have nearly tripled. Computers can be found on every floor. They have also added "Smart Rooms" with some cool interactive software that makes studying in groups a little less dull. Plan ahead, however, because all these things will become very difficult to use during midterms and finas.

Scholarships: I would fail FSU in this category, but I did, after all, receive the Financial Aid I needed so I can't complain TOO much. However, the whole process was a nightmare. I filled out the necessary forms I needed to way back in the beginning of the summer and turned all paperwork in to the office of Financial Aid during Student Orientation. Well, a week before school started, they called me to tell me none of my forms were in. None? You mean all those forms, including mine and my parents' tax return forms and social security numbers just vanished into thin air? Apparently so. I didn't even have time to worry about where the hell they all ended up and the pure lunacy of it all, because I had to complete the process, my education was hinging on receiving government compensation both of my parents were out of work at the time.

I completed everything once again and turned it in. Just when I thought the nightmare was over, it continued to roll on. I'd check my Financial Aid Toolkit on blackboard and something was always wrong. You filled this out wrong, this doesn't match your FASFA report, I need your signature here, blah blah blah. Then, of course, when you need to call them, you sit on the phone for practically an hour trying to get through to a $9.00/hour secretary who couldn't give a flying-you-know-what about your problems.

It was a very cumbersome and annoying process, but once it was completed, I did receive all the compensation I was told I would get, which I'm very grateful for. But the system really needs to be cleaned up.

Athletics: F-L-O-R-I-D-A, S-T-A-T-E (What, What?) – They don't lie about Southern college pride. Though I wouldn't consider Florida to be an atypical, southern school (it's a Florida hybrid), the spirit definitely runs deep. FSU is football first, always, though prior to this season, the school had suffered a slump with Bobby Bowden at the end of his dynasty and the spirit had fizzled out just slightly. However, now with Jimbo Fisher at the helm, he's bringing FSU back to glory, and you can feel the excitement in the air, especially after beating the hated Gators for the first time in 7 years (a hatred that you must swear an oath to upon entering the university :P). Our basketball team is on the rise, and baseball has become one of the more solid sports. Overall, athletics are a prominent part of FSU and we continue to be a consistent competitor in all NCAA sports.

Campus Housing: Housing Hoopla – As an out of state student, I wasn't made aware of the "first come, first serve" process of housing, which is odd since I would think they'd try and inform all students of the process. Because of that, I ended up applying reasonably late for housing and wasn't informed until July via email that I wouldn't receive campus-provided housing. Almost every other school I looked at made it mandatory for students to live on campus in their freshmen year, yet because of the quality of some of the dorms, sophomores and juniors are given an equal opportunity to live on campus. So I was given the shaft, having to settle in an off campus dorm, which has been decent. It turns out, getting the boot from student housing may have been a blessing in disguise as there are 14 dormitories on campus and only 9 of them have been renovated since the '60s. So anyone who just makes the cut to live on campus is guaranteed to live in one of the crappier arrangements with closet-sized rooms that smell of mold.

Bottom line, anyone even thinking about applying to FSU should apply for housing IMMEDIATELY! I made a mistake, albeit one I couldn't help as I wasn't aware of the housing time table, that cost me on-campus housing. And, don't get me wrong, the new dorms are really nice; apply early and request the best ones: Wildwood, Degraff, Gilchrist, Brower, all great places to live with suite-style living (share a bathroom with 3 people instead of 50). I still wish I lived on campus, even if it meant living in the shoddy dorms, as the social life really isn't duplicated in off campus housing. So be smart, apply early, get the dorm you really want to make for a great freshmen year.

Campus Quality: Student Gym – The Leech is awesome! It is huge and has a variety of different machines that I use!

Scholarships: I have never had problems with receiving my financial aid. The staff is very accessible and making appointments with financial officers helps a lot. My aid comes through with no hassle every semester. Financial aid is there when you really need it

Greek Life: I personally am a "Greek" myself and a proud sister of the new sorority Alpha Phi at Florida State. Although we do not have a permanent house as of yet, our sorority remains extremely close and active in the Greek community. Every sorority and fraternity has been very welcoming to Alpha Phi. Greek life heavily participates in almost all student based activities as well as with the entire community. Many non-Greeks view Greeks in a negative manner, but usually after hanging out with them change their minds. One doesn't have to be Greek to fit into the school; however, being active in the Greek community makes the college experience much more fun.

Academics: Communications Major – I'm a Communications Major and currently applying for the Communications College at Florida State. I have taken some communication classes. The staff are extremely interested in their work and are always there to help the students. The material learned intrigues me as well as challenges me to move forward in my studies as well as excel. I volunteer at the Florida State radio station, V89, by working with the Public Relations department. I attend different concerts and meet with band members to help promote the station. I'm also a member of FPRA (Florida Public Relations Association). I attend weekly meetings for both facilities as well as participate in seminars when offered.

Scholarships: Easy, Fast, and Efficient – I received the Freshman Scholarship without even having to apply. I keep it as long as I have a decent GPA. Good stuff!

Campus Food: It depends on where you go. From best to worst: Figg Dining Hall, Fresh Foods, Ogelsby Union, and then Suwannee Dining Hall. It's nice to pick what you want in the union food court, though. They just added a Papa John's and the sushi there is amazing!

Local Area: Tallahassee or Better Known Tallasassy – The hippest part of Tallahassee is Railroad Square. All the artists work there and on the first friday of every month, they hold a late night event to showcase their work. Next to the square is All Saints Cafe and the Engine Room, they're both excellent spots for college students to hang or party.

4 College Sophomore

Administration: Not Very Strict at All – I can't recall any type of incident of my friends or myself getting into trouble so far... FSU is a well-known party school, so for the most part students do their thing. Your biggest look-out is really the TPD, they are EVERYWHERE.
