3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: The parties are usually hosted by the soccer, lacrosse, or baseball house. Sometimes SAE throws something, but with most of the parties you have to know someone to find out about it or get in. 99% of them are in Allston, which is a pain because it's usually a 30/40 minute t ride.

3 College Junior

Party Scene: Parties don't usually happen on campus because we are so small, and if they do they're small dorm gatherings. Good parties definitely exist but it all depends on who you know and if you're not close with someone in a partying crowd then it can definitely be challenging to find something good. Knowing people at other schools helps too.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: There are some fun parties but not super consistent.

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: I'm not one to partake in off campus parties or parties in general because I'm more of a small group kinda gal. However I really appreciate how easy it is for me to smoke in the dorms without massive fear of getting caught. I personally don't drink so I can only comment on what I've observed but it's also very easy to consume alcohol in the dorms without getting caught. I've actually witnessed incredibly wasted students laying on the floor of the residence hall lobby while another student helped him in front of a security officer and she did nothing. From what I hear, as long as you can get to your dorm without causing an enormous ruckus and are not dealing with alcohol poisoning, security lets you slide if you're walking past them drunk. Though I don't partake in parties, I know I could easily find one to go to as it's always buzzing on Friday about the best place to go for the weekend.

In Boston, there are lots of places to go and things to do at night. Parties are not usually thrown on campus, and the few that are held are usually low-key to avoid getting broken up. Most Emerson parties are held at students' apartments and aren’t attended only by Emerson students. The nightclub scene in Boston is pretty good, though almost every bar and club is very strict about carding, even for students who don’t want to drink. Luckily, the places that are the most fun are 18-and-over and offer live music. These venues also serve booze, so underclassmen can still hang out with the big kids who want to drink when they go out. The students will tell you to avoid Lansdowne Street because it is mobbed with college students and late-20-somethings looking to relive their college days, but the area can be fun according to other students.

Until you hit 21, the bars are out of reach. Don’t even try flashing a fake ID at big clubs or popular bars—you will be humiliated. Plus, the police don’t take fraudulent IDs lightly. Boston’s early curfew is another thing that students usually complain about.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink
Head away from downtown. Areas like Union Square in Somerville, Jamaica Plain, and even Allston and Brighton are usually less expensive than bars downtown.
Organization Parties
Organizations on campus occasionally throw good parties. Gauge magazine rented the Modern Club for its first launch party and packed the place. The senior class also rents bars and clubs during the countdown to graduation and senior week.

Milky Way Lounge & Lanes

The Milky Way Lounge is great for live music on Friday nights. The lounge hosts shows ranging from indie rock to Latin jazz. There are also candlepin bowling lanes available to rent by the hour. Though it's a little steep for just a date, it's affordable and fun for a group of friends.

T.T. the Bear's Place

T.T. the Bear's is right next to The Middle East and operates similarly. The club presents indie, punk, and hip-hop shows seven nights a week. The club is only open until midnight, however, because of a local curfew for live music. There is no dress code. Cover charges are usually collected, and they average about $10

The Enormous Room

The Enormous Room isn't exactly a club, but feels like one when things get going. It's upstairs from the Central Kitchen in Central Square. Ironically, the Enormous Room is rather small, but is amazing fun. The place plays world music and reggae in the evening, and usually features DJs at night. IDs are checked.

The Middle East Restaurant & Nightclub

The Middle East is the most popular spot for Emerson students to go on the weekends, or even during the week. The space has two rooms for shows; the upstairs is cozier, while the downstairs is large, but still intimate enough to see your favorite band pretty well. Both upstairs and downstairs have bars. The club is really anal about checking IDs, so don't even bother if you don't have a driver's license. The shows are 18-and-over, but they still card if you aren't planning on drinking. Most shows cost between $8 and $12. On Sundays and Wednesdays, there is belly dancing in the "Corner," which is in part of the restaurant.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Triple D's

Triple D's is kind of a dive bar in Jamaica Plain that can be difficult to get to, unless you know the buses, or want to drop cash for a cab. But the place is definitely worth the hike. With cheap drinks and amazing karaoke, the bar is popular with Emerson students looking for a good time.

435 S Huntington Ave.

Jamaica Plain

(617) 522-4966

Bukowski's Tavern

This bar is known for its 99 bottles of beer on the wall, and awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. Some students think it's a bit too pricy, and others gag at the lame Charles Bukowski theme that would make the poet roll in his grave. Others enjoy the atmosphere and brit-pop and `80s music that they play.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Students under 21 can always catch a good show at one of the many venues in Boston, such as the Orpheum Theater, The Middle East, The Paradise Rock Club, or the Hard Rock Café. The theater district is known to have some great Broadway shows, and students can often get student rush discount tickets.
