3 College Sophomore

Administration: The administration can be strict as far as alcohol and drugs. their is a zero tolerance policy, and if caught you have to attend a reform program at the school.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Campus strictness is average. Because I never lived in a dorm, I was only on campus for classes and group meetings. I heard of dorm drinking/drugs and most of the time it was dealt with in a strict manner. I always felt safe at school because of all the emergency stations and cops.

4 College Freshman

Administration: Campus is not so strict that I feel suffocated or that I have a lack of freedom, but are strict enough that I feel safe and protected in my dorm and around campus.

3 College Freshman

Administration: There aren't too many rules that I can't live with. I think there's a good balance between allowing students to enjoy college life and the rules and policies that are enforced.

ECU has an extensive list of violations for which students may be fined, but in general, ECU is casual, except in the cases of a few serious offenses. The Student Code of Conduct, called the Cluebook, can be found online at Of course it is full of legal jargon, but students should scan it, because ignorance and inebriation are not excuses for breaking the rules. Students used to drink underage and smoke pot without much discretion in the dorms, but with the zero-tolerance policy, in addition to legal action, students are required to leave campus housing if they are caught. Some students used to joke about the horrors of meeting with the "mean dean" about drug law, liquor law, and honor code violations. Lately, though, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities has focused on educating students about the impact their actions could have on their academic careers and criminal records rather than concentrating on punishment of bad behavior. Parking and Transportation officers look for ticketing opportunities, but ECU Police, RAs, and counselors have better things to do, like protecting students from themselves and others. Of course, the best way to not get caught is to be quiet. If students want to get caught, they should be loud and stupid when breaking rules.
