Academics: The geology department has very knowledgeable staff.

Campus Housing: Freshman dorm halls are kind of dirty and need renovation, especially on College Hill. Upperclassmen are given several options for the newer dorms.

Health & Safety: Relatively safe. Safe Ride isn't as "safe" as it is made out to be. Love the campus, absolutely beautiful.

Guys & Girls: The guys and girls on campus are very diverse. East Carolina has a girl to guy ratio of 3-1 i belive but I could be wrong about that number. East Carolina also had been voted as one of the universities with the hottest girls in the nation i can see that. You will typically find social groups such as the preppy kids, greek kids, Skater boys, and jocks. As far as guys are concerned, there are a lot of girls on campus and i believe there is someone for everyone

Off-Campus Housing: There are 10 different student apartments i can name off the top of my head around campus. most of them are affordable for students on budgets ranging from $350-600 per month depending on which apartment complex you choose to live in. They are all safe and secure and include great ammenities like private bath and bedrooms, decks, community pools, computer labs, and gyms. All of them have buses that run to and from campus so you do not have to worry if you don't have a car. In most of the leases each roomate signs a seperate lease so everyone does not get punished if someone cannot pay their months rent. Overall if you choose to live off campus, there are plenty of choices that will make you happy

Majors: Great Professors – The College of Business at East Carolina University has calmed my nerves and confirmed for me that I am headed in the right direction. The professors are very good about making time for you with their office hours, and know alot about what they are doing. It is overall a great learning environment when surrounded by all of their instructors.

Transportation: Saferide Is the Safest – Safe Ride is a shuttle bus system that has a number you can call if you need to get anywhere around campus or in short proximity of the campus. This ride is free and has a very short wait after calling them. It is a much safer option than walking to your destination.

Campus Food: Our dining hall has a variety of stations for all different types of foods including Chinese, Vegetarian, American, Barbeque/Southern-style, but the only problem is the behind-the-scenes nutritions facts label on these foods. If only some of the students knew what these foods were made of! Very unhealthy ingredients, and this is what leads me to making my dinners in my dorm room most of the time.

Campus Housing: Helpful but Limited – ECU has a variety of student housing and they are very helpful if you need to change rooms. The moving options are limited though with few empty rooms.

Drug Safety: Drinking Is the Main Issue – Drug Safety is as great as it can be without busting in peoples rooms or spontaneous drug tests in class. There are a lot of marijuana users, but I truly believe there are no more than most colleges.

Party Scene: The clubs downtown are generally small and some have stigmas to them. The one's most locals go to are considered the most dangerous because of their access to weapons. Most people who go DT (downtown) are on campus students and they aren't allowed weaponry. Another club is considered not only racist but iffy with their dress code. ECU clubs are over-hyped because of the drunk attendants overall. However, SupDogs and other eatery places so close to the clubs is AMAZING and the clubs overall play great music.

Overall Experience: A Pirate for Life – I am so happy and thrilled with my decision to attend East Carolina University! The campus is beautiful, the professors are amazing and the school spirit is vibrant. It is a wonderful feeling to sit in Dowdy-Ficklen Staduim and watch the wave of purple and gold and hear the roaring chants as our football team runs onto the field (and I'm not even a fan of football). There are so many various student organizations available to join that I had a hard time narrowing down my membership to just five. I have enjoyed the courses I've taken thus far for my major and I truly feel that I have learned so much since coming to ECU. When I first took a tour of the campus, I instantly felt that I was at home and that feeling has stayed with me ever since. I will definitely be a Pirate for life!

Health & Safety: I rarely feel unsafe on East Carolina's campus. ECU has their own certified police department on campus and I often see police cars and police officers on bikes patrolling the campus. That being said, I still wouldn't recommend walking around at night by yourself. Just like in any city, its best to always be aware of your surroundings when you are walking at night on the campus. The most common crime on campus is theft. Always keep your dorm door locked and never leave your laptop alone in public, not even for a second!

Academics: It Is Possible to Double Major! I am a double major in English and History. The English and History majors are flexible enough that they compliment each other and I will be able to finish in four years without having to go to summer school. From my knowlegde, it is also possble to double major at ECU and graduate on time with other programs too. Besides the core classes required for my majors, I have the opportunity to choose from a long list of courses and form my majors around the concentration that I desire. I am very pleased with the variety of classes offered in my majors and excited to graduate with two BA degrees!

Off-Campus Dining: An Excellent Variety – Greenville has a very nice variety of dining and a good few are in walking distance of the campus. Hibachi Japan, La Hacienda, Krispy Kreme, Thai 360, Starbucks, Sup Dogs, Tipsy Teapot (cafe), Chico's, Jimmy John's, McDonald's, Arby's and Wendy's are all within walking distance of the campus. There are also a few other dining and bar spots near the campus in the downtown area. Other dining in the Greenville area (you will need some kind of transportation to get there) include Red Lobster, Mazatlan, Chic-fil-A, Chili's, Dunkin' Donuts, Cook-Out, Lemon Grass Thai Restaurant (my personal favorite), several Hibachi places, several Chinese places, Panera Bread, Cold Stone, Olive Garden, Logan's, Checkers, Bruegger's Bagel Bakery, Parker's Barbeque and several others. Many dining locations offer a student discount. The cost at most places is reasonable, but as a college student, I prefer to use a meal plan and eat on campus because it is easier and more convenient for me with my schedule.

Academics: Education First – East Carolina has a repuation for being a party school, but that reputation in no way reflects the value of an education from ECU. The professors are intelligent, knowledgeable in their field and most are eager and willing to help if you ask questions. The course work is rigorous according to the level of the class and most classes (excluding some Freshman level courses) are relatively small (20-30). I have truly enjoyed all of the classes I've taken thus far in my major and all the professors have been friendly and very helpful. My classes have been challenging and I feel grateful to have acquired so much knowledge from the amazing professors at ECU.

Majors: I'm Happy With My Major – Though I have a passion for art and many people thought that's what my major should be (personally do not believe i'm that good) i chose nursing. It is a struggle trying to get my gpa where it needs to be since i messed up my freshman year but im pulling it back up. I wouldn't change my decision to be a nursing major. My goal is to be a neonatal nurse practitioner and eventually a neonatologist. Before I settle down as an nnp i want to be a traveling nurse for a year or two. I do not have concerns about getting a job in my field, nurses are always needed somewhere.

Diversity: Fairly Diverse – At ECU it is pretty diverse with people from many different ethinic backgrounds. There is a larger amount of white students and second would be blacks. There are very few hispanics here and native americans here, this is the reason i give ECU a B instead of an A for its diversity rating.

Party Scene: Skip Parties – There are parties that take place and especially during football season, it can get crazy!

Overall Experience: It's Great – I love going to school here. There is so much to do on campus and the culture is awesome!!

Campus Quality: Facilties Are Nice. The gym is two stories and up to date. It is also clean, and the students that work there are nice. The student center is large - half of the building is three stories. The library is large, however the public is allowed inside. This means less parking places for students and that it is sometimes noisy - at least on the first floor. There is always something to do on campus.

Drug Safety: More People Drink – Of course there are drugs on campus, there are drugs on every campus. But at ECU, more people drink.

Majors: On My Way – I just recently changed my major for the fourth time therefore I have yet to begin taking classes for my major. For the past two years I have been taking pre-requisite courses.

Technology: Awesome Computer Labs – The computers at ECU are in great condition and numbers. In the two years of attendance at ECU I never had to wait for a computer, even during final exam week. ECU ensured that their students would be able to get their work done by providing high speek internet access all over campus.

Guys & Girls: My Peeps – The guys and girls at my school are versatile. Every person comes with a different personality and view on life. Most importantly, majority of the guys and girls are focused on graduation college in a reasonable amount of time.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
