Campus Quality: The Joyner library is the best libraries I have been to in the state of North Carolina. ECU is very good about hosting many campus activities as well.

Academics: Middle Grade Education- Mathematics and Science- WPE – The WPE program is good. I am at East Carolina University enrolled in the College of Education. I have found this program to be challenging but help. One thing that I am impressed about this program is the amount time we are required to spend in the classroom. However, one thing that I do not particularly care for is the amount of "education courses that are required". Due to the fact that I am major in middle grades education with concentrations in math and science, there should be more of an emphasis on STEM subjects- more mathematics and science based classes.

Off-Campus Housing: Not Many Good Choices! There are bad neighborhoods directly outside of the college campus. There is housing that is nearby, but they are not in good condition.

Parking: NIGHTMARE ON CAMPUS!!! Limited parking available and you get tickets like crazy. Your best bet is to keep your car at home as long as you can and use the university transit system.

Greek Life: Greek Life is very prominent at ECU. They are greatly involved and do a lot to help out at ECU. There are always blood drives, fundraisers and fun runs/walks going on. There's no hiding they are a big part of the party scene at ECU, but then again, what greek life doesn't have a party side? There are many options for rushing and everyone involved in greek life from the Fraternity and Sorority members themselves to the ECU Greek Life Advisor are friendly and helpful.

Campus Food: The food here is your average college food with some twists thrown in. You'll have days of your typically college cuisine like pizza, hamburgers, wraps, etc. But once in a while there will be "themed" dinner for holidays and events like Halloween, Mardi Gras, Super Bowl, etc. The food is a step above what was sampled at other colleges, but there is definitely room for improvement. Overall, there are plenty of options to eat on campus with two dining halls, Chick-fil-a, Chilis, Einstein's Bagels, Subway, Burger Studio and so much more. You will definitely find something to fit your craving and you will never go hungry.

Weather: Humid, Lots of Mosquitoes – As a former San Diego native, I despise North Carolina weather and bugs.

Administration: If you get in trouble, they are pretty strict about it. You can and they will kick you out if you need to be punished for something. It's such a big school though, that a lot of effort needs to go into keeping everyone, or most everyone in check!

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: I have not come across anything like this yet. Maybe because I dont live on campus, but there is some alcohol usage, but the facility members and campus safety make sure everyone is safe!

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: The facilities are amazing, so many chances to do a variety of different activities. By far the best gym/athletic facilities I have seen from the campuses I have visited, or been to!

4 College Senior

Guys & Girls: People Seem Friendly – I have no yet became an official student. But I have visited many times, and the people seem great! My older sister and best friend, Jannel goes there. I hang out with her friends when I go. We always have something to do! They are great people: supportive, loyal, funny, and caring! When I go to her job, people are very welcoming and sweet. I can only imagine that most of the campus is the same way!

Local Area: Greenville, a Second Home – It has a beautiful campus! It seems like a great town, and there are many things to do. People seem friendly as well as active there! It may have a reputation for partying, but I do not view it as a party school. I view it as Greenville, a second home. A place for education. A beautiful place. And the college of my dreams!

Off-Campus Dining: So Much Food! I love the dinning around here. There are so many restaurants out here for everyone's taste.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: A lot of students need financial aid so make sure to fill out you FASFA early.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: Favorite Experiences – The FX program when that I was in as a freshman in college was great. It allowed me to make friends and feel comfortable at the school.

3 College Junior

Party Scene: Clubs have underclassmen in them. House parties are great until they get shutdown.

Campus Quality: Always something interesting going on in Greenville.

1 College Junior

Parking: Hardly anywhere to park. If you do not have a pass, forget parking pretty much anywhere. All visitor spots are almost always taken.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: Greenville is not the best place for a college. The college itself is the best thing here. If you go outside of the college limits in out.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: Even though East Carolina is known for the education and Health sciences I believe that the school has a wide variety with the majors and classes. Every one of my friends have different majors like art, psychology, business and english. I like that our school is in an urban area so you are able to explore the surroundings and find new things to do every weekend.

Administration: Punishments Are Fair – my first semester at ECU I was put on academic probation. Part of the problem was my procrastination and the other part was not fitting in and the huge changes I had to go through. I made it through and I am doing better now. If the policies were any looser a lot more slacking would be going on.

Off-Campus Housing: Apartments Are Abundant – There are a lot of options to choose from when your trying to go off campus. There are a wide range of costs for the apartments and some even offer you a job to help you pay rent. The ECU buses even go to the apartments all throughout the weekday.

Scholarships: System Complication – The original system I went into was very much separated by red tape and miscommunication between departments. A mistake in the student judicial records, for example, lasted my entire last year interfering with my financial aid, even though I went twice to explain I had no holds or judiciary tickets.

Some other problems were with anything out of the ordinary, such as study abroad. The key though was always to just go in person and talk with someone. The office at least has good hours and it isn't always busy. Plus the people are generally helpful as long as you don't have a short fuse. Organization has also improved over the past 6 years.

Weather: Great Springs, Horrible Summers, Wonderful Fall, Irregular Winter – Greenville is about 40 miles from the coast, so this causes some irregularity with the weather in the warmer and colder seasons, but good temperate weather in the in between.

Spring is generally wonderful, warm, clear skies, green and very comfortable. But summer is just horrible; humid everyday, at least mid-90s everyday, random severe weather with the rain leaving a stuffy humidity everywhere.

Fall is wonderful again with temperate cool weather, steady clear skies and a nice clear feeling. Winter is pretty much anyone's guess. Cold to cool, maybe it will snow, maybe it won't. But generally clear weather.

Party Scene: Great Location, Great Prices, but Not Very Large – 'Downtown' is where everyone heads during the weekends and Thursdays as well. Lots of clubs, some chills bars (P-Dens for example)and some alright cheap food. The biggest problem is after one year or so, this gets really old really quick. Clubbing can be fun, but after a while it is nice to just head to a sports bar and get on the specials. The only real chill place is Sup Dawgs, because you can sit outside on the patio, drink, smoke and watch sports.

If you are underage the ALE is everywhere and the cops are also spread out all the time downtown to prevent fights and any crazy public displays. Regardless of some of the negatives it is nice to be downtown in a small area sometimes and be able to walk home with a large crowd.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
