4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Medical Programs – I picked East Carolina because they have so many different kinds of health care majors. I knew it was the field I want to enter, but I was not sure at first what I want to do.

4 College Freshman

Greek Life: There are many Greek housing around campus. They seem to be very together and enthusiastic about people joining their group.

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Campus Activities – There are always campus activities on campus. I have attended many of the activities including the "midnight madness", "polar plunge", "cultural week", and many more. I love how they always gives aways free food and prizes on campus. It gives me lots of opportunities to hangout with my friends.

4 College Sophomore

Local Area: There is always something to do, especially club wise. Campus usually has activities also. Just bring a car.

3 College Sophomore

Parking: The parking at school isn't so bad. It depends on where you are living on campus. If you are a freshman, life sucks.

5 College Sophomore

Administration: Nothing Is Strict. I will say this campus has a zero drug policy and I totally agree with it. But they are a little more lenient towards the drinking.

1 College Sophomore

Campus Food: Awful Awful Awful – I absolutely loathe the campus dining. We have quite a few restaurants on campus such as Chikfila and Chili's but as for the cafeteria's they are absolutely awful. They have only a few choices, and a salad bar. I am pretty positive everything, including the lettuce, has been bathed in butter. Also, God forbid them give you a decent portion of vegetables. They give you about three pieces of broccoli and that's all you get. Healthy? Noooooooo. With their consistent making of pizza, some sort of fried food, and stir fry bar there is nothing I am going to miss when I get into my apartment this fall.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: East Carolina University has a wide variety of majors. I was extremely comfortable choosing East Carolina University because instead of having a few majors they had many I could change to.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I would definitely say that East Carolina University has some excellent academic programs. They are especially geared to medical programs. All the programs have been challenging but successful for my college career.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The safety at East Carolina University is mediocre. There is quite a few criminal acts that occur on or near campus. There are millions of campus police, but I have never seen them do anything but eat.

4 College Student

Local Area: Pirate Nation! Tailgating before football games and sitting in the bone yard is all part of the football fan experience. The crowd is filled with purple and gold, the cheers pump everyone up, and we're all pulling for a win!

3 College Junior

Greek Life: Non-Greek on Greeks – The Greek life at ECU is pretty popular. Not being a student involved in Greek life, I dont really see the point. But, the people that are in Greek organizations tend to stick together and usually look like they are having fun.

4 College Junior

Party Scene: The only nightlife at ECU is the bars and clubs downtown. It is a very fun nightlife though. Every Thurs-Sat the police close down the downtown streets at night and it becomes a mardi gras like festival. Most students go downtown every weekend, as it is not uncommon to hear, "Are you going out tonight?" instead of "Hello." This is probably because the Schools doors literally have stairs leading to downtown, and the apartments off campus have a free bus system on weekend nights.

5 College Junior

Scholarships: Great Job – When I use school financial aid, which is every semester, I get alot of help and they seem to find the most money available for me through lottery scholarships and grants.

3 College Junior

Campus Quality: Go Pirates – During sporting events it is great that they have a section for students to sit and a club called the pirates club to join and be able to get season passes with membership. As I walk through my campus at ECU I feel proud of the atomosphere

4 College Junior

Technology: Ready for Use – At any given time I have been able to use the computers when my home laptop is down. During the times I use WiFi it is even better. Printing is great in the library at East Carolina

3 College Freshman

Technology: Computer Availability – Since everything from homework assignments to class participation requires a computer, East Carolina is stocked. They supply Mac's and PC's so students have their choice of computer. There are several computer labs where printing, scanning, etc., is free. At the library, printing is not free, however each student has a pre-made account that has about $18 dollars on it. This is good for students because we don't have to carry mass amounts of quarters with us when we need to print something.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: Honors College and School Spirit – They are trying to increase the number of good students on campus, by implying the new honors college. There is also a great deal of school spirit on campus. There is a lot of school pride.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: Football and Baseball – Football is very popular, but tailgating for football games is the most popular thing about sports at East Carolina. Baseball is relatively popular as well. The other sports fall off the map.

3 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Library, Student Rec Center, and Mendenhall Student Center – To start, Joyner Library is huge. There's tons of computers, private study rooms that you can reserve (you'll want to reserve one around finals/midterms if you're someone that needs some private, distraction-free space to study), and obviously tons of books. The Pirate Tutoring Center is also located in the library. They're open 6:30-9:30 Monday-Thursday, and there's also some daytime hours depending on the subject as well. The library is open until 2AM on weekdays and I believe midnight on the weekends. It's open 24 hours during finals.

The student rec center is the main gym at ECU. There's maybe 8 basketball courts, volleyball/badminton nets, a rock climbing wall, a track, tons of exercising equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, etc.). There's also a weight room. The rec is open until 10 or 11:00 at night most days and opens fairly early as well. The rec center is close to West End (a neighborhood at ECU). If you live on College Hill (a different neighborhood) it's a good 15 or 16 minute walk to get to the rec, however there's another small gym that's located on the hill if you don't want to go that far. There's also a shuttle that comes every 10-15 minutes that takes you right to the gym! The gym is free for all ECU students, and you can bring a guest for 5 dollars for the day.

Mendenhall Student Center has a lot of rooms where clubs meet. There's also a bowling alley downstairs (it's extremely cheap- only 25 cents per game and I think 75 cents to rent shoes!!) as well as pool tables and other things in the billiards room. Mendenhall also has a movie theater room where they show a different movie every couple weeks or so. It's usually movies that just recently left theaters, and they show it multiple times (usually on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at different times).

Technology: There's a good handful of computer labs scattered around campus at ECU. The computer lab on College Hill (one of the neighborhoods on campus) doesn't charge to print anything. I'm not too sure about the other computer labs on campus though. At the library, printing costs 10 cents a page, however everyone starts with about $17.00 credit on their account. I've never heard of anyone spending more than that amount in a semester, and it refills every semester so it shouldn't be an issue. A few of the academic buildings have computer labs in them that I know of as well, so it's generally not hard to print something right before class if you put it off until the last minute.

2 College Sophomore

Administration: Except in regards to drugs, you will receive a far number of chances if you get in trouble

1 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Drinking, Drugs, and Abusing Pills – There is a lot of partying, and dug use associated with it.

5 College Freshman

Campus Quality: The professors care about the progress of their students and are willing to work with them. The students are very friendly. There are several outreach opportunities for different organizations and majors.

5 College Freshman

Campus Housing: College Life – People are very friendly here. There is almost always a party to go to and friends to hang out with. I am still able to study without interuption from others. There are several service organizatons, academic groups, and social clubs.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
