Overall Experience: My experience with courses and professors has been really good so far. When going through registration there were a lot of different courses and pathways I could of gone with. It was really made me feel like I could do whatever I wanted where in high school it was pretty much hand picked for me. The courses I took were very good and I learned a lot. The professors had a lot to do with that. They respond to emails fairly quickly and offer office hours if you're needing help or have questions. The class sizes varied depending on the class which I liked. Having a variety let me see different dynamics and showed me the atmosphere I learn best in.

Party Scene: A lot of people have their own opinion on the ECU party scene. Some say it's just a party school but I disagree. There are parties at every college you go to and you choose whether you will take part or not. It's all about choosing what you want to do. If you don't party there are organizations to join where you can meet people that enjoy the same things. The party scene can have both negative and positive impacts on students. If students decide to make the party scene their whole life and not focus on school then they will be negatively impacted. It can have a positive aspect on students because it lets people be social and meet new people. It's a lot of people's chance to branch out and become their own person.

Administration: The campus strictness at East Carolina is a good amount between being able to enjoy your experience as well as being safe. Underage drinking is a big issue these days among all colleges and my school definitely takes it seriously. The Resident monitors are very serious with alcohol in the dorm which is good so no incidents occur. Another big strictness is parking. This is one thing that is taken a little too far. Sometimes there is no where to park other than a reserved spot or somewhere where it can be towed and you have no other option. I feel like parking tickets shouldn't be given out as often but maybe more warnings first and then start tickets after a certain amount of times.

Health & Safety: Every time there is a crime on or near campus you get a text/email if you are signed up. Those are really helpful because It notifies you of where you don't need to be. Also around campus there are blue lights and you can press the button if you are in an emergency and it automatically notifies the police. Since there are many of those it really helps me feel more safe.

Athletics: At East Carolina University, athletics is a huge deal. Football is the main sport having the most fans attend. People who don't go to the school or aren't even alumni still come to support. The student section goes wild and it's where I've had some of the best memories so far in college. Athletics definitely bring people together and make us all a Pirate family. Besides school spirit, the facilities are amazing. All of the fields are kept up really nicely and every time I pass the track, baseball field or football stadium It just makes me want to be a player.

Guys & Girls: The way majority of he students dress are sweats/running shorts, tshirts, and sneakers. It is a relaxed clothing environment. For the most part everyone on campus is friendly and willing to talk!

Health & Safety: I haven't see or heard of issues that needed to be handled. I know that they police are ready to take action in case of an emergency or whenever they are in need.

Off-Campus Housing: I visited a friend who lives in the off campus housing. It was really nice but the price wasn't too nice. It's either you have a nice campus place with a not so nice price or you have bad off campus living with ugly prices. I have yet to see a median with this kind of housing.

Scholarships: I had a bad experience with financial aid. I kept losing grants and getting it replaced by loans. Two days before I came to school, I lost another grant and had to pay another bill, unexpectedly, out of pocket. I think financial aid should do a better job with giving aid to those you need it.

Administration: If there is suspicion that misuse of an illegal substance is in a room, if there are weapons, or even a noise disturbance, the administration is always first on scene to clear up and fix the problem at hand with no problem.

Campus Housing: I stay in the suites. The suites are pretty nice. We have our own kitchenette and living room. People gather just about every night in the lobby to watch movies, play ping pong, or just to hang out. The RAs provide various activities throughout the month for the residents to participate in.

Party Scene: Easy Carolina is known as the "party school." We keep that reputation by having parties on and off campus. People from all over North Carolina come down to join the fun!

Athletics: The school spirit at ECU is exciting! The student section hypes up the event making it a place you want to be. Our sports teams are getting better and better each year. It is worth coming out to see our athletics!

Local Area: There isn't much to do in Greenville. You can make the best out of the small mall or small shopping centers.

Athletics: ECU football is easily the most popular sport here and widely has the most fan support. There are many other underrated programs such as men's baseball and women's basketball. The spirit of pirate nation can be felt any day of the week other than gameday. Facilities are also very nice for the athletes.

Campus Housing: I live in what is probably the worst dorm on campus but ECU has it's share of nice dorms. Anywhere on West End is surely the way to go if you're into the social scene. Living on College Hill means long walks to certain places on campus like the Rec Center or the library. Central seems really nice especially since it's in the middle of campus but I do not know much about it.

Scholarships: It can be hard to get the financial aid you may need directly from the school but there are other options out there that are available.

Health & Safety: Campus crime is a thing here but I would say is not very prevalent. ECU uses the blue-light system and has many measures that can be taken to prevent crimes. I would say that I feel safe crossing campus at night alone.

Local Area: Greenville is a great college town. Purple and gold can be found just about anywhere here. Some places outside of ECU aren't as pretty as closer towards the school but in general, it can have a very "home-y" feel to it. Great school spirit flows through the city.

Party Scene: ECU has a very big party scene. Parties can be hard to find if you do not have connections. The best parties are generally at places off campus. Downtown may not be as fun if you aren't 21. Fraternities sometimes have decent parties that people tend to enjoy. Being in Greek life certainly helps if you want to party often. There's something for everyone.

Academics: It is what you make of it. It shouldn't be too challenging if you put in the effort necessary to do well. I would say it's underrated given the price of the school.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
