Health & Safety: The smarter you are and more aware of your surroundings that you are, the safer you'll be. I think it's easy to avoid danger if you steer clear of the crowds and places that danger is prevalent.

Scholarships: I received the financial aid I need easily by filling out a FASFA. I would encourage any student to fill out this form.

Greek Life: Greek Life is a pretty major part of the social scene at ECU. Almost every girl I know is in a sorority.

Majors: I plan on having an internship. I plan on interning at a school in a classroom observing PreK-Kindegarten students.

Athletics: Football game days are huge at ECU, with the whole town pretty much turning into one giant tailgate. Club and intramurals are still big here too with a lot of students participating. The rec center is huge with an indoor and outdoor pool, indoor track, basketball courts, and group fitness rooms.

Campus Housing: There are 3 different on campus housing areas - College Hill, Central, and West End. College Hill is the closest the the stadium, however there's a train that wakes you up in the middle of the night. The room sizes on the hill are average, but there's 2 suite style dorms available and they are currently constructing 2 new dorms to open next fall. Central is right near classes, but the dorms are old and the rooms are very small. West End is right next to downtown, so this is where the party people stay. The room sizes are the best here, and it's right next to the rec center and dining hall. The housing process this year was annoying because a lot of people didn't get their assignments until August. Cost is average. Amenities include community bathrooms, a lobby with seating and a TV, hall kitchen, and sometimes a study room.

Greek Life: I'm a non-Greek student, and you could honestly bribe me with a million dollars and I still wouldn't join. The brother and sisterhoods that these students have are awful because they all talk crap about one another. Hazing happens and I think it is the most humiliating and demoralizing thing ever. Other non-Greek students typically have a sense of independence and do not think that it is necessary to buy your friends. The Greeks live in large houses/mansions right around campus and the quality depends on what chapter you are in.

Local Area: Greenville is a small college town, but it does have a bigger city feel to it at times. There really isn't a lot to do around here though. The mall is mediocre, there's about 2 movie theaters, and there's a handful of parks and cultural events. However, game days definitely bring the whole town together as the whole town is one giant tailgate and we all cheer on our pirates out on the field.

Party Scene: ECU has a lot of parties and the best parties around, especially on Halloween. The best parties take place in houses on "the grid"/ right around campus. I believe that parties bring students together, and you can meet a lot of new friends and even make new connections to people who might have your same course of study or same interests. I don't believe that it's bad for a school to have a lot of parties because of this.

Health & Safety: At ECU we have a lot of safety measures put in place - our own campus police along with Greenville police, blue light emergency stations, an alert text message system, and security cameras everywhere. However, as soon as you are off campus is where you have the most incidence of crime, mostly robbery. The majority of the text alerts we get name an off campus location that is almost right next to campus, and it is almost always a local apartment complex. On campus I feel very safe, but I always make sure I'm with someone I trust whenever I go off campus at night.

Off-Campus Dining: There's a good variety of off-campus dining around Greenville. From small local coffee shops and burger/hot dog joints to a number of different chains you can usually find whatever you're craving. There's also quite a few places open until the wee hours of the morning that have whatever you're craving at 1 am. The best places would be The Scullery, Sup Dogs, Chico's, and the ever-favorites Chipolte and Cook Out.

Athletics: GO PIRATES!!!! The sports atmosphere is one of the best in the country, in my opinion. Everybody and anybody are involved with athletics, whether it be intramural or attending sports games, the school spirit is something to be very proud of at East Carolina. Our football team is now ranked #19 in the national top 25 poll and is gradually improving that number with every game they play. Fan support is undoubtedly something to reckon with!

Off-Campus Housing: The cost and availability of current off-campus housing is extremely reasonable. There are a variety of places for people to reside and at very low prices/ month. They all offer great amenities and some apartment complexes even include free amenities. The majority of complexes have gated fences and only allow people in with a key. This allows more safety for the residents within the apartment complex.

Scholarships: It is very difficult to get scholarships for the psychology program because there are so few for undergraduates available. I also just had difficulty finding scholarships that I could apply for let alone finding out how to actually apply for them. Most of my financial aid came from loans from the federal government.

Off-Campus Housing: Last year, I was in an apartment through the university because of a lack of housing for freshmen on campus. However, the apartment complex I was in, while it was large, was horribly run. Thankfully my money went to the school rather than them because it would have been a waste of money. However, my new apartment complex is much nicer. I do miss the space and the abundance of parking, but the quality is much better and the management is much better as well.

Campus Housing: We have quite a few options for campus housing. The main problem in my opinion is that we're trying to expand housing and that has led to a few problems in not having as much housing as necessary the past couple of years. Also, we have one all girls dorm that girls get stuck in even if they don't want to live there and then they have to abide by those rules when no one else on campus has the same rules. I was put there and couldn't see my long distance boyfriend as often as I could have because guys weren't allowed to stay the night even on the weekends while other dorms did not have that same policy. I did not want to live there in the first place so that was a huge let down for me.

Administration: Administration kind of varies between topics. A lot of the police officers are more concerned with breaking up parties than anything else. And some professors aren't super strict about attendance while others are. It's pretty varied but when it comes down to it they seem to try to do the right thing and follow the rules while also giving people a chance.

Athletics: Athletics here are amazing. Football is a city-wide thing that takes over on game days. We're not the top of the charts in any of our sports but our teams are filled with talented athletes and we're moving on up in the sports world. Our fans are great and being inside Dowdy-Finklen Stadium during a football game is an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Health & Safety: I normally feel pretty safe on campus. Our blue light system is great. However I am not on campus at night often at all so that may be different for the students that live on campus. However, when I was in the dorms I felt pretty safe but I was always aware when I was alone.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
