Athletics: Our football is the best! The players as well as the fans are involved. Our athletic facilities are also top notch and well kept.

Overall Experience: East Carolina University is the best well rounded school in North Carolina. The students are very involved and enthusiastic in the community. The school spirit is phenomenal and our alumni are great supporters of the Pirates!

Health & Safety: On campus, I feel extremely safe. I walk around campus at night all the time. It is off campus that feels less safe. This is not because of the students but instead because of the sketchy people that tend to roam Greenville at night. I have not heard of any crimes yet on campus and any crimes occurred off campus seem never to be committed by ECU students. In case of emergencies, there are emergency telephones and buttons that alert authorities if something goes wrong. These emergency pillars are everywhere on campus, probably one every 50 yards.

Overall Experience: The professors at ECU are always willing to talk and help you when you need. They will even meet you outside of office hours to help you if needed. They are all very knowledgeable and passionate in their fields and all of them seem like they want you to become the same about their field. The class sizes are overall quite large but I do not mind. The professors teach effectively and I can easily comprehend the lessons. There is a huge variety of classes and I have been encouraged to take many different kinds of courses.

Overall Experience: I do not know much about any of these topics yet, but from what I have seen, they seem to be excellent tools for other students.

Campus Housing: It is quite nice and an awarding experience. You meet a lot of new people and make long lasting friendships in the dorms. Different dorms are better than others, however. Some dorms have small restrooms, showers, and rooms and others have large. It really all depends on where you get placed. I live in one of the not so great dorms and I still think it is a nice experience and think that even though it all may be small, it really is not that bad.

Greek Life: I would say that the Greek life is very large at ECU. Going Greek isn't required if you want to party, but it definitely helps a lot. When people go out for a fun night at ECU, they are usually going to one of two places, Uptown or a fraternity house. Non-Greeks do not seem to dislike the Greek members and vise versa. The housing for Greek members is not special. You either live in the Greek house with 5-20 other members, you get an apartment/house or you live in a dorm. ECU is definitely a Greek dominant school.

Athletics: Athletics is a gigantic part of life at ECU. During football season, literally every student packs into the stadium and cheers on the schools team. Its an amazing experience to be in the student section of the football stadium. I can hardly handle it because they never sit! Thousands of students jump, stand, and cheer on their team for the entire length of the game, never easing up. Even when the team loses, everyone is there to support the team. The intramural sports are huge in my opinion. When I tried to sign up for intramural soccer last Fall season, there were dozens of teams for me to sign up for. There is an enormous amount of students who participate in intramurals. When I played, it was one of the main things I looked forward to in the week. I met so many people and made so many friends!

Overall Experience: I have only been enrolled in East Carolina University for one semester so I do not know very much about the program that I am in yet. However, from the courses that I have taken so far, I would say that ECU is an excellent and exciting school, both academically and socially. The courses I've taken were quite rigorous and engaging. The labs helped me understand and see what we had been learning with my own eyes. The atmosphere at ECU is superb; everyone is friendly and willing to help. I feel quite safe on campus and find myself walking alone late from the library at night knowing that I will be completely fine on my walk back to my dorm. The schools intramural sports were also an amazing experience, allowing me to play sports with a group of completely random people who I would have never gotten to know otherwise. I chose ECU as my school because I could see that there is an immense pride for the institution instilled in all who attend and have attended. My high school assistant principal, who I have know since I was quite young, still attends the Pirate football games at the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Everyone who I know who has been associated with ECU in any way has a deep love for their school. This seemed to be deeper than any other school that I had seen or heard of and that love and pride for ECU is what drew in my interest. Without a doubt, if I had to choose my school again, it would be East Carolina University.

Campus Housing: Not a lot of social events to foster the housing environment.

Greek Life: I did not have the opportunity to meet Greek students.

Overall Experience: Very good experience, I enjoyed every moment preparing my undergraduate major, the only thing is that the program (French) is very limited and does not offer a lot of opportunities to go farther. There are no masters degree programs for French and education.

Health & Safety: I never feel unsafe when walking through campus.

Campus Housing: Living in the dorm for a full year isn't bad, and I strongly recommend living in a dorm your first year because it gets you aquatinted with everything more easily.

Athletics: The school spirit at ECU is unlike another, even though the athletic teams themselves aren't very good, that never stops the students and fans from cheering for them.

Overall Experience: ECU wasn't my top choice but it was still a school I was very interested in going to, I never thought I would like it as much as my top choice. After spending a semester at ECU I have completely fallen in love with it; the campus is gorgeous, my professors are helpful, and my friends are great.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
