Greek Life: I'm not into Greek life, and neither are any of my friends. I know very little about the Greek life on campus, but I know it's a big thing. I live right across the street from some frats, and they can be quite loud and I often see them lounging on their roofs drinking. It can be entertaining to watch the police show up and quiet them down since I have a great view from my dorm window. Free entertainment.

Athletics: I'm not a sports person. I've never understood the hype that comes with them. ECU football is huge here. I've been to a few of the games, and they're pretty exciting to go to. I don't really know what goes on with the other sports because they're not talked about nearly as much as football is. Football seems to overshadow education at some points of the year because it's just such a HUGE thing there.

Overall Experience: I always feel at home both in Greenville and on ECU campus. Ever since I first stepped on campus for my first tour, I instantly feel in love with the atmosphere there. Everyone was so welcoming. Even now that the students/staff aren't trying to impress me and others as possible incoming students, they are still some of the kindest people I've ever met. All of my teachers seem to care about me and my education, and will talk to me about what's going on in my life. I've developed close relationships to many other students. I've improved a lot as an art student (which is my intended major, as well as psychology), and I've generally improved as a person. I've always been extremely shy and quiet, and although I still am, I feel and act more outgoing. I am not someone who loves parties and large, noisy get-togethers, so that was one thing I was concerned about when coming to ECU since it is known as a party school. Although there are many parties, specifically on the weekends, and a lot of alcohol/drugs on campus, there is no pressure to join. No one judges you for not being interested, nor do they disrupt you if you choose not to participate. I feel more at home here than I ever did back home, and I am so happy that I chose to attend ECU. The only negative thing I can think of when it comes to ECU is that there seems to be a miscommunication problem. For example, I am a student in the first year of the Art and Design LLC. Over the summer, when calling the school with questions about this new LLC, the housing department would tell me over and over and over again that no such thing existed. The art department, on the other hand, would be able to confirm that there was indeed going to be an art LLC. It seemed as if there was a lack of communication between staff members and departments, leading to a lot of confusion and frustration. I still find these confusions now as a student when trying to get information, such as for study abroad or financial aid.

Overall Experience: I am very happy at ECU. The courses are interesting, the weather is great and the people are friendly. I have met many nice people and a few good friends whom I plan on moving off campus with in the Fall. The work load can be gruelling but I have taken advantage of the student tutors and the professors office hours. The food is excellent. ECU was my top choice and I fell very fortunate to be able to attend colllege here.

Campus Housing: Since I am a transfer student, living on campus was not something I had to do. I chose to live on campus so I could meet new people. Unfortunately, I ended up with the least social dorm. Overall, I am glad I lived on campus so I am able to apply as a Resident Advisor for the next school year.

Greek Life: I am not involved with Greek Life because of financial concerns. I have my girlfriends who are in sororities and they love it. I do not condemn anyone who is involved with Greek Life. For the most part, they are all very friendly people who enjoy representing their philanthropy and also helping out around the community.

Athletics: I am involved with the club dance team at East Carolina. I really enjoy surrounding myself with a great group of girls to keep me physically and academically motivated. I also enjoy attending the football games. Everyone really likes being involved with certain sporting events but I wouldn't say they are all people are concerned about at school.

Overall Experience: I enjoy my walk to class seeing everyone wearing their pirate pride, picking up a coffee from the on campus starbucks, and having the advantage of observing just how beautiful campus is. I love having big classrooms because I love meeting new people and creating study groups with my friends. The fact that we all respect our school so much motivates us to earn a degree and excel in our studies. East Carolina University was my dream school so when I got accepted I couldn't have been more happy. I got accepted to other colleges but I could not see myself anywhere else other than pirate nation.

Overall Experience: So far, East Carolina has been a great school, it's filled with happy and intelligent people, the way the trees change color in the fall capture your attention like no other, and the campus itself is set up perfectly to ensure that each college student here gets an amazing experience. Although it is a little far from home, 2 and 1/2 hours exact, it's not that bad. I'm still able to visit my family on weekends besides holidays and breaks, but even when I leave to go back to my hometown, a piece of me is thinking East Carolina is my home and suddenly your old city starts to feel as if your an "out-of-towner". I was worried about coing here, when I toured after I got accepted, I was reluctant to come, but so far, it has been one of the best decisions I've made and I love telling people I am a Pirate of ECU.

Overall Experience: I transferred from another university because it no longer fit who I was or who I wanted to be. The University I am currently at I felt welcomed and accepted immediately, everyone I met was extremely inviting and made sure I knew where I was going and always asked to see how everything was going. If I were to choose again I would have started here as a freshman.

Overall Experience: ECU is a great school! I have never visited a school with as many kind and friendly students as this one. Everyone has a lot of school spirit and there are many opportunities for leadership and involvement. I was concerned with it's reputation as a party school and of course the party scene is there if you want it but there are many other things to do if that is not something you're interested in.

Overall Experience: I love that I went away for college. Being able to have my own freedom and make my own decisions, is teaching me many responsibilities and how to be an adult. I have made so many new friends that have the same interests as me and make me feel at home. The professors at my school make learning enjoyable, and to a lot to make us succeed.

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
