Athletics: Athletics at ECU is extremely important and generates a huge revenue. Going to a pirate football game is almost a right of passage. Being that it is a division one school many people in the community also come to support the schools sports teams.

Overall Experience: The people at East Carolina University are extremely friendly. Professors go out of their way to help make you successful and there are plenty of opportunities for students to expand their horizons on whatever topic may interest them. There is a little bit of everything to get involved in on campus from activism to sports. What makes ECU unique is the pride and school spirit that has been a long standing tradition at ECU and for many generations to come. GO PIRATES!

Campus Housing: My dorm freshman year felt and looked like a prison (one of the oldest dorms on campus). During one of NC's coldest winters recently, my heat stopped working.

Greek Life: NPHC greek life is great, not sure about PHC. There are quite a few PHC frats and sorors, though it seems that they're only concerned with social gatherings.

Athletics: The football team isn't used to being looked at nationally. The school puts all of its effort into football and doesn't put a large emphasis on other sports.

Athletics: Everyone here is very supportive of our sports teams, and there is LOTS of school spirit. I don't go to games because I'm not into sports, but most students really enjoy our games.

Overall Experience: Greenville is boring because I don't party, but the campus is beautiful! The faculty and most students are serious and want to change our party reputation. The classes I've taken are good, and the counselors are very helpful.

Health & Safety: Every college is going to have their fair share of crimes and assaults, what I like about ECU is that they tell you right when something is reported. Every student gets an alert sent to their phone via text message before anyone else. Such as parents and other immediate family members. There are also blue lights around campus that help prevent crime and assaults.

Overall Experience: ECU offers a wide variety of courses to their students. Class sizes range from 30 to 200 students, with many different teaching styles depending on the teacher. Half of the time your teachers aren't real teachers but grad students which sometimes makes the curriculum harder to learn.

Overall Experience: Getting a job after going to ECU is I feel like a hit or miss. Some employers think that a degree from ECU is a joke because of the universities past, but more are starting to learn that ECU is harder than they think and is actually a serious college. East Carolina offers a career fair two times a year where you can go and meet businesses and get your name out in the job world, which is very useful to students.

Campus Housing: Living in west end gave me the chance to get to any class in less than 10 minutes. The dining hall was just steps away from my dorm entrance. Living in a coed dorm gave me the chance to meet a lot of people who I became close with over the year.

Greek Life: Greek like doesn't affect you if you don't want it too. It's a big part of the community if you're in it, but if you're not you probably don't think greek life affects our campus. All of the sororities on campus have houses, unlike the fraternities. Only 5 have actual fraternity houses.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
