Guys & Girls: Hierarchy is a thing and I wish it weren't. Not just Greek

Guys & Girls: It's alright in general. There are a few and there aren't a few.

Guys & Girls: I think this university portrays a mixture of both a southern school and a northern school. I think the economic status of the students' families are fairly easy to assess based on the social culture created at the school. While there may be some socio-economic differences between students, for the most part there is a tight-knit community feel, and no one is left out.

Guys & Girls: Most Dukies are athletic and put a decent amount of effort into their appearances.

Overall, Duke is an exceptionally manicured campus filled with equally attractive, put-together people. The old story goes that the guys are better looking than the girls, but in reality, it doesn't take much to find a truly beautiful member of either sex. Most Dukies are conscientious about their image, and it shows—students hit the gym often to stay fit, and people commonly dress up for class and parties. You will meet plenty of people on campus who just seem "too perfect," those students who are good looking, brilliant, funny, and intensely motivated to succeed. While these enigmas can create some pressure on campus, the overall atmosphere consists of happy, social, and smart kids with above-average looks.

In terms of the campus dating scene, students tend to lean much more towards weekend hookups than long-term relationships, but it isn't impossible to find some great couples on campus (and if you stroll through the Gardens or past the Chapel on a nice spring day, you'll quickly find a young Duke alumna in a long white dress having her wedding photos taken).

Social Scene
It is rare to find a Duke student who doesn't find the University a bit cliquish. This is not to say that you can't make a lot of friends in a variety of groups, but sometimes, parts of Duke can feel exclusive. Students are fun, bright, and attractive, but tend to stay in small groups of fun, bright, and attractive people. It is easy to carry on a conversation with classmates on the bus, walking to or from a class, or anywhere on campus, but if you're from different groups, it is unlikely you will move to the tier "close personal friend" from that of "casual acquaintance." Once you find your niche, Duke will be a ton of fun. Dorms, clubs, organizations, and projects-anything where you interact with a lot with other people-can be great places to forge strong friendships.
Hookups or Relationships?
Hookups are definitely the prevailing wind in these parts, but there are some students who manage to maintain healthy, committed relationships on campus.
Dress Code
There is no set dress code, but, overall, students are preppy. The likes of J. Crew, The Gap, and Vineyard Vines reign supreme, with button-down shirts, khakis, and Sperry's being a part of nearly every student's wardrobe. When dressing down, people are likely to sport jeans, a Duke T-shirt or sweatshirt, and flip-flops. Duke students almost always look good, and you will find few who are willing to roll out of bed and go to class in pajamas or sweats. There are certainly exceptions to these rules, with plenty of students refusing to conform to Nantucket-inspired apparel. On the whole, though, campus looks fit for an L.L. Bean catalog.
