Greek Life

2 College Senior

Greek Life: Housing for greeks is sad. They live in on campus apartments. Greek people tend to view themselves as superior and it shows, despite the fact that everyone is a nerdy Duke student and wasn't super cool in high school. Non-greeks are hostile towards greeks generally, and greeks tend to be snobby and rude towards non-greeks (especially those in "top" tiers)

3 College Senior

Greek Life: Greek life for minorities in meaningful. There is NPHC consisting of historically black orgs and MGC for multicultural organizations. But Panhel and IFC (Greek life consisting mainly of white people) is toxic and abusive. Those orgs don't really do much for the community

Greek Life: I am not too familiar with Greek life on the campus.

Greek Life: I have a neutral outlook towards Greek Life at Duke because I am not involved with it. However, most of the stories I have heard from Greek friends deal with parties and drugs instead of philanthropy and brotherhood/sisterhood. There is a social hierarchy among the Greeks based on which group you are in, but thankfully they do not hold the opinion that all independent students are beneath them.

Greek Life: They say that it's only 1/3 of students who do greek life--- but it feels like a LOT more.

Greek life at Duke is pretty big; not as huge as, say, the basketball following, but huge nonetheless. You can survive socially without being a member, but you won’t get through Duke without being at least somewhat affected by Duke’s Greek scene. The number of students in fraternities or sororities might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s easy to understand after a bit. There are several Greek groups that don't fit the stereotypical mold of meathead jocks and perfect, pearl-wearing girls; instead, they are just groups of casual friends with social lives scheduled by the Greek chapter. It is not imperative to be Greek in order to have a healthy social life, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Greeks may be a minority within the entire student body, but the majority of the social scene is definitely controlled by Greeks, so most students will at least investigate their options by participating in rush in the spring.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel like joining some selective living group. It is quite possible to thrive at Duke without going Greek. However, you’ll want to take Greek life into account when you’re choosing a college. The cliques and groups can be irritating at times throughout the year, but other than a few bad apples, the Greeks at Duke are quite open and friendly.
