Drug Safety: Most of the guys and girls that are involved in the greek scene do some type of drugs.

Administration: School is rather strict in some areas but lenient in others. You don't need to check your guest in your dorm whenever you have a visitor unlike most schools.

Parking: As a freshman, I am only allowed to park on smith gated warehouse, which is not even on East Campus (The freshman living section at Duke). Parking become extremely difficult when I have to park at West as the parking area in Bryan Centre gets filled up rather quickly. I ended up having to pay extra to have my car parked in the parking lot. If you want to get it for free, do it after 5 pm (there are usually some open spots in front of the chapel).

Academics: Professors - especially art history professors - are extremely great and very passionate. They are ready to help you whenever you need help, especially because of the small size of students taking this major. The school can benefit with a wider variety of courses. Workload is still doable and there is one program that is beneficial for my major. However, since my major is not popular, it is sometimes overlooked and thus, lack the number of resources.

Majors: Although Duke has passionate art history professor, I felt that it lack the wide range of variety of courses including contemporary art, 21st century modern art, etc. These are areas that I would like to develop more as a student and I would like to concentrate more on. Additionally, the school's location make it difficult for me to immerse myself in the art industry.

Technology: The computer system at my school is really well, with wireless readily available at every spots on campus. There are OIT labs in both of the major libraries - Lilly and Perkins - that could assist students with computer softwares from Photoshop, etc.

Health & Safety: Duke does what it has to, but they closed down the Freshman student health centre, the appointments for the main centre has something ridiculous like a 3 week waiting time. If I'm dying, 3 weeks is too long! In terms of safety, I only feel safe around white people. I'm black, and so the police always look at me twice when they see me walking on campus, it's only when I speak in a British accent that they leave me alone, or if I'm around white people.

Administration: I don't mind strictness, but from the police, it tends to be targeted at ethnic minorities, instead of the whole Duke community. Admin also seems more strict when it comes to these minorities, but as a whole people hide things very well.

Off-Campus Housing: Only some people do it because you have to live on campus for 3 years

Drug Safety: Drugs aren't that noticeable on campus. Most people don't use them.

Overall Experience: Duke is difficult to get used to because you will always feel inferior and bad about yourself. But it is fun and will pay off in the long run.

Local Area: Durham is an up and coming city. You just have to know where to look.

Off-Campus Dining: I'm a vegan, and the healthy options are great! You really have to get out there and look for things... hit up Monuts Donuts, Mad Hatters, Whole Foods, Pops, WaDuke, Elmos, Fosters, Parker and Otis, and Guglhupf!

Guys & Girls: Eh. Guys are obnoxious frat guys that will make millions someday. If you can find one who isn't flexing in the mirror all the time, don't let go.

Party Scene: Depends on what you like. I wish people did things besides get disgustingly drunk, but thats just me.

Greek Life: Sororities and fraternities matter a lot on campus. They dictate the social hierarchy and social scene. That being said, if you are apart from it, it doesn't really matter.

4 College Freshman

Weather: Usually the weather is amazing. Just buy a raincoat and Hunter boots.

Health & Safety: Durham is a semi-dangerous city, enough that Duke has regular break-ins and you need to keep your door locked. Student Health is so inconvenient and students regularly black out from drinking too much. Rape is also a problem on campus.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Duke students are generally very happy with their experience, but it’s not impossible to find students who imagine they’d be happier somewhere else. Great academics, a vibrant social life, and the beauty of campus make this school an easy choice for many. However, a lot of students are peeved by the top-down social programming they see coming from Duke’s administration to counter the fraternity- and sorority-dominated student programming. Students and the administration are still trying to find the right balance of power and a unified direction, but the friendships students have forged with peers and professors easily make up for whatever shortcomings they might perceive.

Duke is one of the top academic schools in the country, but that’s not its only hook. You’ll never see Harvard’s basketball team in the Final Four, or Yale students camping out for weeks to get sports tickets. Obviously, basketball shouldn’t be your major concern in choosing a college, but it is often used as an example because it typifies the difference between Duke and so many other top universities. There’s an emphasis on friends and fun here, and it’s important to consider these aspects as well as academics when you’re choosing a school. Remember, you’re choosing the place you’ll spend the next four years of your life, not just the name that shows up on your degree at the end.
