Weather: Not bad... :)

Party Scene: Not good, not too bad.

Technology: Wifi is available everywhere and is fast. You are allocated money for printing, but if you somehow run out, they just give you more at no additional charge. The campus offers numerous computer labs, but most people just use their laptops for everything they need.

Off-Campus Dining: Durham was recently ranked the "foodiest" town in the south. The city surrounding Duke provides a plethora of off-campus dining options, the majority of which are affordable and delicious. On Sunday morning, you have to pile in the car and head to Monuts in downtown for a bagel sandwich and a fancy donut or two.

Greek Life: Greek life at Duke is perfect. It is not overwhelmingly powerful as it is at big southern public schools. At Duke it provides a tightly-knit group of friends and numerous social opportunities. However, it does not seclude you from friends in other fraternities or non-Greek students. Some of my best friends are in different fraternities and they hang out in my section frequently. The Greek students have an overall higher GPA than the non-Greek community and are generally more involved in on-campus activities and clubs.

Health & Safety: A recent increase in mugging warranted an increase of on-campus security. Personally I have never felt unsafe and I believe Duke is a perfectly safe place to be

Majors: I am an Econ major with a concentration in Financial economics. It's a great program. It is one of the harder majors at Duke, and some of the core classes such as Econometrics can be a real beating. In my experience, the econ professors truly care about how you do and are very willing to meet outside of class. Additionally, the Financial education program run by Emma Rasiel is one of the best programs of its kind in the nation. Prof. Rasiel is beyond helpful and very willing to tell you how it is. If you are looking to go into finance, Rasiel is your best resource. She is extremely committed to the students and brings in an abundance of financial firms.

Majors: Duke is a target school for the majority of the big banks and consulting firms. As a result, these firms are on campus numerous times throughout the year for info sessions, then again for on-campus recruiting. The career center is very good at helping students secure internships.

Campus Quality: The facilities are amazing at Duke. Both Brodie gym on east campus and Wilson on west are beautiful and newly upgraded. The libraries are the best and provide study spots for every type of student.

Weather: It never gets too cold. It does rain a lot, but I personally see rainy days as the best days to study. Fall and spring are absolutely perfect in Durham and warrant an abundance of outdoor activities such as tennis, sand volleyball, and just hanging out outside playing corn hole

Campus Housing: Coming into Duke I was very skeptical of the housing system at Duke. As a freshman you are on East Campus with the other freshman. I initially saw this as a negative aspect, but quickly came to love it. I still frequent Lilly library when I need to study. Sophomore year, I lived in my fraternity section on Central Campus. Again, I initially disliked central. It is somewhat dilapidated and relatively inconvenient. As the semester went on, I grew to love my section, my apartment, food fac, and my daily walk through the Gardens to get to West. I love central.

Administration: Duke provides the perfect college atmosphere. You can buy alcohol on campus and walk around with it. As long as you aren't cheating in school, Duke tends to try to stay out of your life, allowing you to make your own personal decisions

4 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Although there is drug use, it is not as mainstream as many people make it sound. Additionally, there is very little pressure to try drugs. Some people enjoy drugs, however they do not push others into it. Duke is an incredibly studious atmosphere and students do not let drugs get in the way of academics

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is a great deal of diversity at Duke. That being said, different types of people tend to self select into smaller groups. That is not always the case and stereotypically homogenous settings such as Greek Life are more diverse than the public thinks.

Party Scene: Shooters. Oh youre tired of Shooters? sweet, because we're still going to shooters because you have NO OTHER OPTIONS. Seriously we go to UNC and NC state to change it up, because devines is awful, and there are not other options

Weather: Its fine I guess. Its hot and humid in the summer, anbd typically snows in the winter. The equinoxes are nice though. If this plays a factor in choosing school, then dont go here, because you dont belong here.

Drug Safety: Kids here drink to deal with how hard this school is. Its a sad place filled with people who work all of the time and do not know how to relax. Can be fun, but is often filled with frat cocaine parties, sexaul assualt, and EMS calls every weekend.

4 College Senior

Technology: Does the job. Pretty good internet and OIT is very helpful

3 College Senior

Transportation: We have buses, and they do a pretty good job. Nothing special

Campus Housing: Seriously freshman housing is the only thing they get right. You have your own freshman campus which is nice, but the housing system is so stupid, I was penalized by the school for the amount of complaints I levied. They literally could care less about yu. If you have a ton of cash, chances are youre fine. But everyone else can "suck it" -- Duke University.

Administration: Duke could not care less about you. You are simply a walking paycheck to the school. As long as you do not get caught and embarrass the school, do whatever you want.

5 College Senior

Academics: Unbelievable School. So many opportunities and so much research being done. Honestly if you can afford this place, its worh your time.

Diversity: A bunch of rich white kids. There are a lot of kids who try to champion gay rights and foreign policy and some secondary shit. But in terms of fitting in if youre even a bit different, good luck. They resent you being there, so be ready.

Off-Campus Housing: Its sweet, too bad you have to wait for your senior year to leave campus. Thats because duke only cares about your money, and ways to siphon it out of your pockets

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Duke students are generally very happy with their experience, but it’s not impossible to find students who imagine they’d be happier somewhere else. Great academics, a vibrant social life, and the beauty of campus make this school an easy choice for many. However, a lot of students are peeved by the top-down social programming they see coming from Duke’s administration to counter the fraternity- and sorority-dominated student programming. Students and the administration are still trying to find the right balance of power and a unified direction, but the friendships students have forged with peers and professors easily make up for whatever shortcomings they might perceive.

Duke is one of the top academic schools in the country, but that’s not its only hook. You’ll never see Harvard’s basketball team in the Final Four, or Yale students camping out for weeks to get sports tickets. Obviously, basketball shouldn’t be your major concern in choosing a college, but it is often used as an example because it typifies the difference between Duke and so many other top universities. There’s an emphasis on friends and fun here, and it’s important to consider these aspects as well as academics when you’re choosing a school. Remember, you’re choosing the place you’ll spend the next four years of your life, not just the name that shows up on your degree at the end.
