Health & Safety: There's not a lot of campus crime, other than occasional theft and alcohol violations. Security gets a lot of bad rap but I've personally never had a negative experience with them.

Health & Safety: There are some problems with the general organization of public safety on campus which they are working to improve, but it seems they are still working out the kinks. They have put a notification system in place to email and call students or their parents when an unsafe situation has occurred on or near campus, but it has come to my attention that they are not always thorough in their choosing of relevant events to inform students of. For example, there have been a couple occasions when they have not informed students of possible shootings near campus, and only notify if there are clear, witnessed shootings. I think it is relevant to include possible shootings because guns and shootings are serious and common occurrences in big cities which students faculty should be aware of. There are also discrepancies about the way sexual assault is handled by the administration which is a reflection of public safety. However, there are options available to make the campus and the surrounding area safer for students; I have never felt unsafe on campus. There are the standard blue call boxes which automatically notify campus police in the event of a dangerous situation, and there are also options like the Guardian App (an app for universities which provides different options of notification to others about a student's safety when commuting on or near campus), and a security escort during on/near - campus commute. Drake Public Safety appears to be heavily involved with the Des Moines police in terms of controlling a situation and staying informed, which I think is important in a city environment. So all-in-all, the security system has an effective base, but it doesn't seem like the practice is as effective.
