Guys & Girls: Students are focused on doing well, not so much on making friends.

Guys & Girls: I have hung out with people from my class many times since I've been here, but I don't know much about any other students other than what I observe walking through campus.

Guys & Girls: People at Columbia dress really well, but all the attractive males are either gay or complete dickwads. This school is heaven if you're homosexual or a hetero male, but if you're a hetero female, you won't be finding your MRS. degree here.

Guys & Girls: Students are highly focused and competitive. There is a wide range of interest from the arts to sports. Dress code is relaxed.

Though most students don't decide to attend Columbia in search of love, many students agree that there are plenty of attractive people around campus. Students cite individuality and an interesting personality as the main components of attraction, though there are certainly good-looking people around. One peculiar feature of Columbia's dating scene is the fact that Barnard College, a women's school affiliated with Columbia, is located right across the street. This means that the guy-to-girl ratio of undergrads in the vicinity is definitely skewed, providing a challenge for girls seeking guys. Additionally, there is a large LGBTQ community at Columbia, making it a welcoming environment for all sorts of sexual orientations.

Columbia is a diverse community in all aspects, meaning it is difficult to pin down the particular dating atmosphere. While hookups are definitely plentiful on campus, other students find themselves dating or even engaging in long-term relationships at Columbia. Overall, social interactions are fairly relaxed, and students tend to be comfortable in their expressions of sexuality. Less relaxed is the clothing style at Columbia, where most students opt for button-downs and oxfords over sweats and sneakers when going to class. This is likely due to the fashionable environment of NYC, but it can be intimidating for those who dress more casually. That being said, undergrads can typically get away with wearing just about anything, and individuality is always appreciated.

Social Scene
The most common social activity at Columbia is probably drinking. There are lots of neighborhood bars, which are often filled to capacity throughout the weekend. If paying $6 for a beer at a crowded bar isn't your thing, there are usually parties around campus hosted by fraternities, student groups, or individual students. Additionally, if you manage to venture outside of the neighborhood, you will be rewarded with the seemingly endless variety of activities that await you in New York City!
Hookups or Relationships?
There is a variety of social relationships on campus. Though not completely nonexistent, serious relationships and exclusive dating are not terribly common at Columbia. Casual dating is more prevalent, as are random weekend hookups. However, plenty of students choose to dedicate their time to their studies and forgo the dating scene entirely.
Dress Code
While Columbia fashion may be more heterogeneous than at many other schools, there are still definite trends in dress. As a whole, students tend to dress well on a daily basis (this is New York, after all!) and seem to aim for a hipster-fied preppy chic. That being said, there is room for all sorts of quirky or laid-back tastes, and individuality is respected.
Did You Know?
In 2010, Columbia was ranked as the No. 1 college for safe sex according to Trojan's Sexual Health Report.
