Athletics: There are no athletic scholarships offered at my school. All athletic participants do so voluntarily in addition to their academics. Therefore, it's a big deal when a team does well, but heavy emphasis is rarely placed on any sporting event. I mentioned the athletic facilities are relatively subpar, I speak only of the weight room for Columbia. That being said, the campus is in northern Manhattan where there is not much space. The gym is underground and they do a good job utilizing the space to the most efficient way possible.

Overall Experience: Having served for six years in the Navy's Submarine Force, I was accepted as a non-traditional student to Columbia University's General Studies program. I was nervous starting college at 24, having had such a long break between High School graduation and starting college, but the University is incredibly welcoming and bends over backwards to make sure of student success. I understand it's a smaller college, but the Advisors in all categories seem to legitimately care for the students and do whatever they can to ensure a quick and successful graduation. Even the landscapers are welcoming, always smiling and wishing everyone good days while doing phenomenal jobs keeping the campus beautiful.

Greek Life: I have never noticed my school presenting favoritism nor heavy annoyance toward any group of students, no matter how they classify themselves. In fact, pride and desire for the school to see the range of cultures on campus is high, so representation of whatever your culture or life-style is is strongly encouraged.

Columbia has a unique culture and school spirit. The intense workload and level of academic rigor bring students together in a culture of cozy complaint. Columbians constantly whine about their amount of work, but they also find a way to come together and persevere, and friendships are formed in this shared struggle.

Columbia is not for the faint of heart or those who need their hand to be held every step of the way through their college career. If you need help and seek it out, you will find it. But no one is going to sit down and explain everything to you, and Columbia can be pretty intimidating for that reason. However, this means that students are given the opportunity from the get-go to be independent and to decide for themselves what their college experience will mean for them. Columbia provides amazing resources and can help you achieve just about anything, or will at the very least encourage you to pursue whatever it is you want. The academics are amazing, and the Core Curriculum gives students a shared knowledge of Western thought, which is hugely influential in the way students will approach academics, careers, and life in general. The Columbia experience is an incredible one, and any student lucky enough to get in should definitely take advantage of such a wonderful, rare opportunity!
