Health & Safety: You don't hear of campus crime often, and there're safety personals to walk you around campus when it's late at night, if you want it.

Diversity: I'm at GS and due to the simple fact that it caters to non-traditional students results in a diverse student body. You have tons of people coming from all different walks of life, different countries, different life histories. There are plenty of military veterans and a very welcome community for them (as well as the rest of us who have family/friends serving the country). It's a good mix all around.

Off-Campus Dining: It's in Manhattan - TONS OF OPTIONS – There are heaps of restaurants and food/beverage options around Columbia -whether you're looking for something foreign or just a pizza joint. There's also a ton of options at the supermarkets nearby and you can always grab the subway and head for Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan or elsewhere if you're looking for a different locale. Some of it is cheap, some not -just depends on how much you want to spend.

Academics: New Admit – I start my studies in the Fall of 2010 at Columbia University. I can only rate their academics based on their reputation at this point. I'll be taking science classes and just found out that they grade on a curve which tells me that it will be very competitive.

Weather: The weather here is very nice in the fall and Spring, and bitter cold in the winter. It rains a lot, and when it does, it rains all day. The wind chill is awful. Buy a GOOD coat.

Technology: While much of the campus was wifi, most Columbia housing does not. Students are stuck to ethernet chords or must install their own router, but even this doesn't work too well because of overlapping frequencies. Printers are sometimes broken down, but are usually dependable.

Campus Quality: General Campus – The campus architecture is amazing. The classical architecture of the school fits in well with the classical core curriculum that all Columbia College students take. The campus is lovely and is a nice oasis away from the busy city life around it.

Overall Experience: Pretty Awesome – I have had many hardships in the last few years while I've attended Columbia University. I attributed a lot of these hard times to Columbia because that is where a lot of unfortunate things were happening to me. The last year has made me realize that Columbia is a great school and that unfortunate events clouded my judgements as to what it could really be. All aspects of students life are pretty awesome. Columbia is on a very beautiful small campus but lies smack dab in the middle of New York City. So if you like quiet secluded campuses or campuses in the middle of everything it has both! Not only its location and atmosphere very amazing. Academics are the best! I have loved all of my professors and have enjoyed going to class everyday! I am not that much of a night life, going out all the time kind of person but Night life in New York city is pretty awesome as you can probably imagine. Another thing that is great about Columbia is that they have many healthy food options available to the students which I think is very important! There is so much opportunity here! You have to really make it what you want it to be, and the good thing is that is a possibility.

Athletics: A Decent Athletic Program – Columbia's overall athletic program is decent in that it is clear that the individual teams are striving to become better and there is a very strong sense of camaraderie and bonding that translates to the teams overall performance. Where the athletic program is lacking is in both the confidence in the legitimacy of the program and in the support of the athletic staff. Many student athletes feel that compared to other athletes they are not as talented and that Columbia athletics in general are sub par. This lack of confidence also translates in overall performance. This coupled with many athletes feeling neglected by staff in cases of hardships like injury and the like seems overwhelming as well. Fan support and school spirit have been increasing and has become better and better over the years which is very exciting. Hopefully this move towards student support will help boost the confidence of the athletes and the program overall.

Campus Quality: A Campus Setting in the City – The great thing about Columbia is it has tried really hard to create a campus atmosphere in NYC. So you can go from having a home-cooked meal in the student centre to shopping at Soho's to hanging out on the lawns at midnight all in one day!

Weather: Skyscrapers Hide a Lot – Sunlight is a rare thing and the winters are very cold. When it snows, puddles one foot deep collect on street corners! And sometimes when it rains! You'll need some good rain boots and an umbrella for all the walking you'll have to do.

Party Scene: Good Parties With Cool People – Columbia tends to have some pretty good parties among some of the run-of-the-mill frat parties. You'll have no problem running into fun.

Local Area: So Many Options – You're in New york City! Clearly, the local atmosphere is going to be exciting. There is almost something to do every night of the week.

Administration: The Cops Have Better Things to Do? I rarely heard of anyone getting in trouble for anything that wasn't deserved.

Diversity: A Cultural Hub – Columbia is in Manhattan. It is a good school. Therefore the smartest and most diverse students tend to congregate. If you're looking for an EXTREMELY open-minded and diverse crowd, Columbia's for you!

Campus Food: John Jay Is Good for What It Is: a Dining Hall – With a variety of options, John Jay Dining Hall is adequate and a popular hangout amongst students. Despite really awkward hours and sketchy food from time to time, John Jay is very reliable. It is noted that students from other schools marvel at hos much better Columbia food is. A meal plan is a good idea. You do, however have NYC at your fingertips. Just keep in mind that it can get pricey.

Local Area: Big Apple – New York, New York. What can I say? It is a city that one hopes to conquer, but given the painfully short amount of time I am privileged to be studying here, I am thinking that I probably won't get around to doing and seeing and eating the bulk of what I would like to.

Overall Experience: I couldnt have asked for a better school to be a part of!

Off-Campus Housing: Big Apple, Big Bucks – As a veteran, I rely on the living stipend from the Post 9-11 GI Bill to pay for all living expenses to include rent, utilities, food and household items. For Columbia University, that is only 2750 a month. In an Upper East side apartment, the rent is approxiametly two thousand a month leaving a difference of 750. This is barely enough to cover my other living expenses.

Transportation: A metro card is a must have. New students learn the metro system really quickly. Through the buses, subway and taxis it is really easy to get anywhere in the city.

3 College Junior

Drug Safety: Ivy League Kids Party More Than You Think – The bars up and down broadway are pretty popular during the weekend which starts on Thursday night. Almost everyone parties except for engineering students. A lot of people smoke weed and the more expensive drugs are hidden but there because a lot people at the school have the money to afford them.

4 College Junior

Campus Housing: Convenience of Campus Life – The campus is small enough that your farthest class will be less than a ten minute class and as a freshmen all your dorms are right on campus and easy to get access to. You can stand in the middle of the campus and not know that you are right in the middle of the city. Yet walk outside the gates and anything you need is right there on the street. All different types of food and stores that give you access to college essentials. It makes adjusting to be a college student easy and comfortable.

Health & Safety: Absolutely Safe – Columbia University feels like a safe campus in the midst of a big city. That said, I do know of people who have left their possessions in their suite and had them stolen.

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: I Love New York – Columbia undoubtedly gives you a great educational experience; I love the Core Curriculum for tying students together and giving everyone a comprehensive education, and I love, a student-run database of professor reviews which ensure that I don't have to deal with boring lecturers or unreasonable graders. And of course, I love New York, which provides the best "college town" you could ever ask for. The opportunities are everywhere, fun is always to be had, life runs fast. Everything you'd ever want to do, you can do in New York. The city also provides great opportunities for activities on campus; the political groups can have a field day organizing protests across campus, while the dance groups perform all over the place. As a member of Lion Dance, I've done performances in front of Mayor Bloomberg, at the cultural shows of executives at Goldman Sachs, and alongside Major Lazer at the Hardfest NYC concert.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: At Least People Are Smart – There's some attractive people here and there, but looks definitely aren't the strong point here at Columbia. At least most people are somewhat intelligent and can hold a conversation. Generally, the guys think they're "too good" for most of the girls, and the girls think the same way about most of the guys, which means everyone's pretty average. Small campus makes it easy to get to know and hang out with people, though, and the Core Curriculum does ensure that you have something to talk about with basically every student (sans engineers). The presence of Barnard, the Columbia-affiliated all-girls school across the street, does mean that the guy-girl ratio is a little skewed, though (good for guys, not so for girls).

Columbia has a unique culture and school spirit. The intense workload and level of academic rigor bring students together in a culture of cozy complaint. Columbians constantly whine about their amount of work, but they also find a way to come together and persevere, and friendships are formed in this shared struggle.

Columbia is not for the faint of heart or those who need their hand to be held every step of the way through their college career. If you need help and seek it out, you will find it. But no one is going to sit down and explain everything to you, and Columbia can be pretty intimidating for that reason. However, this means that students are given the opportunity from the get-go to be independent and to decide for themselves what their college experience will mean for them. Columbia provides amazing resources and can help you achieve just about anything, or will at the very least encourage you to pursue whatever it is you want. The academics are amazing, and the Core Curriculum gives students a shared knowledge of Western thought, which is hugely influential in the way students will approach academics, careers, and life in general. The Columbia experience is an incredible one, and any student lucky enough to get in should definitely take advantage of such a wonderful, rare opportunity!
