3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Pretty Typical – While the food offered in the dining halls is pretty typical of normal college fare, culinary offerings in the surrounding areas are superb make them seem even more sub-par.

College Freshman

Party Scene: House parties are popular but can get grimy, especially in Carman. There are always ragers in East Campus and chill sessions, too. You really need friends to properly introduce you once, and then you are set. Bar hopping is a definite thing for students on a Friday or Saturday night.

College Freshman

Athletics: People do not come to Columbia for varsity sports. Dodge Gym is pretty nice with a great facility, and IM and club sports do thrive as those niches do.

College Freshman

Party Scene: There's always a party to be found in New York City, so partying on campus is pretty minimal.

College Freshman

Athletics: Varsity sports are poorly attended, but I highly recommend them. Games are always fun events.

College Freshman

Athletics: As a cheerleader, I think our sports are really good. There are tons of intramural sports, and everyone here is really active.

College Freshman

Party Scene: We live in New York City-everything is bigger, better, and off the hook!

Weather: Go to Kenneth Cole. Wear black.

Weather: I'm from California, so I miss the sunshine every now and then, but New York is absolutely beautiful. The past winter was mild, so I can't say I've been in below-zero weather. Springtime and fall are gorgeous. I love to go for runs in Riverside Park.

Weather: Okay, New York City sucks in the winter and summer, but fortunately, it's been really mild this past year. Winter sucks because it's not only cold, but also windy; it's really humid in the summer. Every other season is comfortable.

Transportation: There are subway and bus stops just outside the Columbia gates.

Niche User

Transportation: NYC is famous for its MTA transportation system. One of the largest in the world. Once you know it, you can travel anywhere in the world without fear.

Niche User

Transportation: New York couldn't function without public transportation. Fare changes and construction are annoying.

Niche User

Transportation: There are trains that will even take you all over New England if you want to get away!

Niche User

Transportation: There is a subway stop right on campus, as well as a few bus stops. You will be using them both constantly.

Niche User

Weather: Summers in New York are magnificent. Too bad winters are so long. Leave your wardrobe at home and update it with NY fabulousness!

Niche User

Weather: New York can be freezing in the winter, and it's hot and humid in the summer. Layering clothing is essential to winter survival because you are constantly moving in and out of heated classrooms to cold halls. Bring a coat that is waterproof and easy to put on and take off. Hats, scarves and gloves are a must, too.

Weather: Summer in this city is gross. There is a layer of slime that coats everyone's skin from late spring until fall arrives. Bring clothing that breathes because air-conditioning is a luxury that most people choose not to possess. Bring baby powder. Lots of it.

Niche User

Weather: Bring an umbrella, or two.

Niche User

Weather: Columbia experiences all four seasons!

Niche User

Weather: Mild in spring, and cold cold cold the rest of the time. Be prepared for very cold weather, though, it isn't consistently bad.

Niche User

Weather: New York gets very cold, windy, and wet in the wintertime. In the summer, however, the weatheris hot, humid, and sticky. You're going to want to break out your coats and sweaters, and you're going to want to bring not only some of your lightweight summer gear, but an air conditioner, as well.

Niche User

Overall Experience: Lots of people at Columbia either convince themselves they love it or wish they were somewhere else.

Overall Experience: If you are interested in being around a diverse student body, a strong education program, and the benefits of living in New York City, I would recommend Columbia. It is a very safe campus, and there are security stations everywhere. It is not a dangerous neighborhood; there are tons of students living around the area. The campus food is pretty good, but not gourmet. The drinking spots are endless, and the campus spots are okay, but the focus at Columbia is not partying, it's studying and making connections in New York City.

Athletics: Unfortunately sports of any kind do not play a major role in undergraduate life unless you are a participant.

Columbia has a unique culture and school spirit. The intense workload and level of academic rigor bring students together in a culture of cozy complaint. Columbians constantly whine about their amount of work, but they also find a way to come together and persevere, and friendships are formed in this shared struggle.

Columbia is not for the faint of heart or those who need their hand to be held every step of the way through their college career. If you need help and seek it out, you will find it. But no one is going to sit down and explain everything to you, and Columbia can be pretty intimidating for that reason. However, this means that students are given the opportunity from the get-go to be independent and to decide for themselves what their college experience will mean for them. Columbia provides amazing resources and can help you achieve just about anything, or will at the very least encourage you to pursue whatever it is you want. The academics are amazing, and the Core Curriculum gives students a shared knowledge of Western thought, which is hugely influential in the way students will approach academics, careers, and life in general. The Columbia experience is an incredible one, and any student lucky enough to get in should definitely take advantage of such a wonderful, rare opportunity!
