At Claflin, the student body is about 60 percent women and 40 percent men—this fluctuates a little, depending on the year, but there are a lot more girls in general. This can spell some trouble when it comes to the dating scene because there is not much to choose from when it comes to pairing up. The occasional fling and random hookups happen often throughout the semester, but these soon sizzle out, just like the Carolina sun. Many Claflin students head to other universities such as South Carolina State University, which is also in Orangeburg, or the University of South Carolina in Columbia to find potential matches.

But, in general, most students totally avoid the dating scene because it is much less stressful that way. Claflin is so small that some students are shy about entering the dating scene simply for the reason that everyone knows everyone else’s business. But the students here have great personalities and are somewhat reserved, so there are a few serious relationships that form between students. However, not many students are open about their dating life or their personal affairs.
