5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Plenty of options are available.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: Focus is on studying, not parties.

5 College Freshman

Athletics: Athletics are a big part of campus life.

Campus Housing: Living on campus is great! Stanback was just renovated and it is very nice. I wish I would have lived in Woodson my freshman year because I would have gotten more of the college experience. SR was very quiet and sometimes I would be the only person who stayed on my hall for the weekend. I like living in Stanback and I enjoy the majority of the people who live here too.

Scholarships: The school does a pretty great job at giving out money. That being said there are people here who go to this school for hardly anything and they don't offer this school much of anything. I got a decent amount of money because I worked really hard in high school. I wish there were more opportunities for scholarships as we get into our sophomore and junior years of college.

Local Area: I feel like the area is somewhat more dangerous than I have ever experienced before. I sometimes feel threatened by certain Livingstone students because they often wander onto our campus.

Health & Safety: I don't about a lot of campus crime, however, sexual harassment is a huge problem here. I can't walk from one place to the other without being cat called. Fortunately, I have been raised to stand up for myself but there are others who don't or won't. I wish we were able to get into all buildings on campus. I am a theatre person and when I am involved in a show I am frequently traveling back from the theater late at night. There have been several times when I have felt threatened or unsafe. That being said, if something were to happen I would not be able to escape knowing that I can only get into my building which is on the opposite side of campus. This makes me feel very nervous every night. Also, because of this people leave doors to our buildings propped open. I have returned to my building well into the night and have found the door propped open. This is a major safety concern.

Athletics: Our athletics are okay. I came from a high school with a lot of school spirit and involvement but that isn't as adamant here. I don't spend a lot of time participating in athletics so it really does not influence me all that much. There are times when I have a disrespect for certain athletes just because I feel like they don't care about or respect our education. They just want to play football and drink on the weekends.

Off-Campus Dining: Overall our off-campus dining is average. I wish we had more options considering our cafe is so bad. It gets repetitive when we are constantly going off campus to eat.

Academics: I changed from being a BFA Musical Theatre Major to Integrated Marketing Communications. I am just getting started and warmed up to the way this new major operates. I like it a lot so far though. I think it will provide me with the knowledge I need to get one of the best jobs and most competitive jobs in our society. It also goes hand in hand with my first love, theatre. At the end of the day the major is helping me become a well rounded human being and it is helping me exercise all of the talents and gifts that I have been so graciously given.

Academics: I think overall the curriculum is great. There are times where I regret attending a Liberal Arts college because there are certain subjects that I feel like I waste a great amount of my time on. When I could be focusing on subjects and topics that excite and fulfill me. I think Catawba provides us with a great amount of opportunities.

Administration: Not getting into other dorms is dangerous.

3 College Junior

Athletics: Our football team isn't that great, but there's always a decent turnout at games.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: The scholarships that are offered are high and help offset the cost of the school, but dealing with financial aid is a pain in the butt.

College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: I haven't had any of my own experiences with off campus housing.

3 College Junior

Party Scene: There's nothing to do on the weekends, so everyone just wants to get drunk.

3 College Junior

Administration: It's okay as long as you play by the rules.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: There isn't much the college can do if things aren't reported. Often things such as self-harm go unreported when they should be reported.

College Junior

Greek Life: There is no Greek life on campus

3 College Sophomore

Parking: Parking is not enforced well in the off campus lot but it is easy to park there.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: It's a lot different from the other schools I have attended. I would like to go back to a larger school that is more focused on my major.

3 College Sophomore

Technology: The computers in the library are very old and slow. The availability is okay but sometimes hard to find.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Everyone seems nice and friendly. Some are stuck up but I haven't met many like that.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Doesn't seem very strict, but the smaller classrooms do care a lot about attendance.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Parking is far away and it is somewhat difficult to find a cheap place to live.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Every school has its problems, and so does this one. But in the end, looking back on their experiences, many students will tell you that they enjoyed attending Catawba. Many have met some of their closest friends at the College and would jump at the chance to choose this school all over again if they had the opportunity.

As long as students take initiative, they will be well prepared for the "real world" upon graduation. The school is unique for many reasons. Catawba has many athletes, a nationally-ranked music program, and a nationally-ranked theatre program—and these are just a few of its assets. The school continues to grow and change.
