Health & Safety

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Public Safety is really professional and nice if you're respectable towards them. There are some sketchy neighborhoods, so know where you're headed if you're going off campus.

Health & Safety: Canisius was the first college in NY to get public safety. They have full police power and have even been praised by the FBI and the government. They are very kind and are always there to protect you. Sure there are some instances of break ins or violence but we are all notified in a timely manner and we are not shielded from any events that occur.

Health & Safety: Located in a very unsafe and troubled neighborhood. In the middle of the city and not the good part. It is a residential area with high crime rates.

Public Safety officers at Canisius are lurking around every corner—in a good way. They consistently patrol campus 24/7. They are never in the way—just there. It is comforting to walk back to the giant parking garage at night and see a Public Safety vehicle sitting right in the middle of it, with an officer inside. However, streets just outside campus are prone to crimes such as petty theft. Public Safety sends notices around of any crimes in the area, and these crimes are published weekly in the school newspaper, "The Griffin." The Student Health Center, in the tunnel level of Frisch Hall, gives counseling and doctor/nurse appointments free of charge—other than the exam and immunization checkup required before the start of each school year, which requires payment.

During the academic year (August through May), the health center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (though, the clinic is closed each day from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch). If there is an emergency when the clinic is not open, you can call Public Safety at extension 711, and it will arrange transport for you to Sisters of Charity Hospital, which is located a stone's throw away from Canisius, or another local hospital if you so choose.
