4 College Senior

Overall Experience: So far I've been lucky getting some really great professors who I would highly recommend to other students.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I have to say that Sacramento State University is a very friendly campus. Students help one another and tutor each other. Teachers can be very helpful and help you achieve your goals.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: I like everything about the school but wish it wasn't much of a commuter school.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: It's hard to find a job on-campus.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: There are a few programs that give awareness of the situation.

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: Some dorms weren't very nice, the newer the buildings are the nicer they are.

5 College Junior

Greek Life: Greek life gives people a lot of opportunities even outside of school.

4 College Junior

Athletics: There is plenty of equipment that is new and accessible for all students.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: I love that i can take a wide variety of courses.

3 College Senior

Health & Safety: As an openly-gay individual, I feel relatively safe; however, concerned friends advised me not to traverse the campus alone at night.

3 College Senior

Overall Experience: The school offers a decent education for the locals.

1 College Senior

Campus Housing: Sac. State offers one apartment complex for students, with a waitlist of two years for a one-bedroom apartment; however, I am a transfer student, so I will graduate before then.

3 College Senior

Overall Experience: Although Sacramento State offers an array of subjects, the problematic new/transfer student process causes concern. Indeed, even academic advisers admit this. Unfortunately, I experienced similar issues. For example, the student leaders lack knowledge, and, consequently, give false information. Also, the school failed to inform students to bring necessary paperwork while selecting classes, so we needed to use our personal phones to access a Sac. State program, which was not user-frenziedly with phones. Worse, we, the students, were instructed to act as our own academic advisers, as we crossed referenced a foreign program and Sac. State list of required classes. Ironically, I could not meet with a GE Adviser until after orientation, when I selected classes. If not for my friend, a current Sac. State student, I would have left crying, like everyone else. Hopefully, this experience does not foreshadow my future with the school.

Health & Safety: We have a police station on campus. If ever anything dangerous or suspicious is occurring on campus then students receive phone calls and text messages from the station staring exactly what is going on.

4 College Senior

Overall Experience: Something I really like about this campus is the faculty. They help you if you need experience or a job, especially if they see that you're a hard working student.

3 College Senior

Greek Life: Non-Greeks see the Greeks as students who waste time on socializing instead of working on their studies, but this could be just the STEM students, since those are the people I talk to.

3 College Senior

Athletics: Our football team gets a lot of support. However, we don't hear or see much about the other sports

3 College Senior

Overall Experience: The only complaint I have is that some professors care more than others

5 College Junior

Health & Safety: Great support and education about sexual assault, and the campus always feels safe.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: There's help available if you look around and ask your peers, teachers, and admin. Depending on your situation, you just need to be diligent.

4 College Junior

Athletics: The facilities are great, but I rarely use them.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: The professors set the right environment for learning, and are willing to help you if you ask for help. Not everyone participates in the lectures as much as they probably need to, but I always try to interact when possible to help me learn faster. There are of course some teachers that aren't very prepared, or willing to help the students.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I mean I am not in any frat. At Sac state people don't really care if you are part of it or not. It is very different from what the movies usually show. Sometimes I find it quite funny, but that's my opinion.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: We have something called The Well. It is rather a large fitness center where many athletes and non-athletes come to workout. It is usually a good place but sometimes it takes forever to get a machine i.e. squat machine, bench press.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I was very concerned about how I was going to fit in this school, but I was very happy to say it was an amazing transition. People were so welcoming and so awesome to be around. I was so happy to say that joing the Marching band was probably the best thing so far!

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students appreciate Sac State because it's pleasant, but they often wish it had more school spirit. The ones who are satisfied with it usually haven't been to other four-year universities, so they don't have anything major to compare it to from first-hand experience. Those who wish for more excitement usually mention wilder Bay Area campuses. A majority of people that attend Sac State just want a degree so they can get out. They know not to expect the typical college experience that makes for legendary times and awesome memories. Too many of them commute. If Sac State were more of an on-campus school, there would be more student satisfaction socially. If you decide to study here and want campus community, seek clubs or other social organizations as soon as possible. If you're laid-back and don't mind coming to a school where everyone just comes to get a grade and a job, make yourself at home.

Many students would be blown away if they knew how hard their education could be, but a lot of them are fine with Sac State's current academic level. Most assignments are easy, and it's surprising what students worry about. There's a writing test, the Writing Proficiency Exam, that all students must take before advancing to higher-level classes, and it has a fearsome reputation because many of them make a big deal about it. But in reality, it's nothing more than an in-class essay where you offer your opinion on a certain topic—that's all. Although most Sac State students don't think their education is lacking, when they voice concerns, it's obvious that something's missing. If they were used to consistently working harder, that test would be a breeze.
