Party Scene

5 College Junior

Party Scene: Each year is different and each year is amazing. Freshman year you get very close with your friends and although getting into things downtown, as a guy, is difficult it allows you to bond with your freshman friends. When you do get into things it makes it that much more fun. As a sophomore you finally have a fraternity or sorority so your social life blossoms. As a junior you really take over as the leaders in your greek organization and its more fun than the year prior.

2 College Senior

Party Scene: Too Greek-centric. Independents and freshmen who won't rush until the next year usually end up banding together because they can never get into frat parties. It's gotten to the point that I much prefer the bar. It's not worth it to go into a basement, grab a beer, then try to walk across the floor with it only to find that over half of it ends up on you instead of in your mouth.

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: It will not be great for first-year guys, but after that it will be great.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: I'm a freshman girl and I love the party scene. Bucknell is not a bar school (at least not until late junior/senior year and even then there are only a few options) but this means that there is a combination of open downtown frat parties wednesday through saturday night, date parties, and registers to keep us occupied- I've even attended small frat date parties/get-together on Monday nights before. You can walk everywhere so you never have to worry about getting too intoxicated to drive or figure out a ride back home.

Once you join greek life sophomore year (most of campus does), there are mixers between frats and sororities that begin around 9:30 and open to the rest of campus around 11:30. Pretty much everyone I know goes out and loves to have fun; you will never be judged for going too hard. Pre-games happen all over the place in dorm rooms (for freshmen at least) and are a ton of fun to go to and socialize before even heading out for the night. Overall I love the night life here and I think what we lack in the bar scene is made up for by the number of options downtown frat options and registered parties.

Student Author OverviewWhat's this?

View student contributors

Despite Bucknell’s isolated location, nobody can ever accuse Bucknellians of not knowing how to have a good time. Many weeks these “good times” happen every single night! Generally, though, the prime nights to go out at Bucknell are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. There really is not much of a bar scene for students, except some upperclassmen who might be tired of the frat scene. The Bull Run Inn is where most students go when they say “the bar,” although there are a couple bars in downtown Lewisburg. As for clubs, there are a few sketchy ones in the area, but students don’t really take them seriously. The majority of a Bucknellian’s social life is spent attending registered parties at the fraternities or downtown parties at the houses owned by upperclassmen. The downtown parties are much more casual.

The party scene at Bucknell can sometimes be hit-or-miss for freshmen. The guys rarely get in anywhere, while the freshman girls can pretty much get in any guy's house, but usually not a girl’s house. At Bucknell, you can’t rush a fraternity or sorority until sophomore year. If you decide to go Greek, there will always be mixers and registers to attend. If Greek life is not for you, you can still attend any organization’s festivities. Occasionally, there might be a JUG (Just Us Girls) party or a brothers’ night, where nobody outside of that Greek organization will be let in. Overall, the Bucknell party scene is pretty intimate, and you’ll see a lot of people you know when you go out.

Organization Parties
If you chose to live in a Residential College (see on-campus housing section) occasionally the college will rent out a restaurant and throw a party. Usually, though, the main organizations that throw parties at off-campus locations are fraternities and sororities. Often, there will be date parties at the bowling alley, and many Greek organizations choose to go off-campus (at a restaurant or bar) for their formals.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Towne Tavern

The Towne Tavern is conveniently located downtown. However, most of the time this bar is filled with locals and it attracts an older crowd.

600 Market St.

(570) 524-0821

Temperance House

Offers special LIT nights every Thursday. The bar was recently remodeled. The downside is that the Temperance House is pricier than most places.

50 N. 2nd St.

(570) 524-2558

Vic's Pub

Vic's is an English-style pub. It offers a wing special every Wednesday. On Thursdays, Quizzo, a popular game, is played. Vic's frequently has live music, and it even has its own beer!

2167 Old Turnpike Rd.

(570) 523-8090

Uptown is Bucknell's very own on-campus nightclub. It doesn't serve alcohol, even during private events, but it does bring in stellar bands, such as Howie Day, O.A.R., Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Dispatch, the Clarks, Maroon 5, Sum 41, and Phantom Planet. The space fills 300 people max, and oh yeah, did I mention the karaoke machine? Good times.

Bull Run Inn

Bull Run offers the largest selection of beers in the area, with over 80 varieties of domestic/import brews. Daily drink and pub food specials are available, so check out the Web site, as they change frequently. The place is happening every night of the week, and is open until 2 a.m. daily, except Sundays when it closes at midnight. There's also a pool table and video games.

605 Market St.

(570) 524-2572

Big Andy's Bar and Grill

One of the only places in the area that offers food, live bands, and a dance club all under one roof. Frats and sororities used to frequently rent out Big Andy's for formals or charity events until the school decided it would no longer allow student organizations to use Big Andy's as a venue for parties.

14 Front St.

Puirseil's Irish Pub

Every Thursday night, The Lowlander Highlanders perform. They bring a mix of traditional Celtic and Appalachian music to the pub. Also, Puirseil's Irish Pub is very close to campus, which is key when considering how you will be getting home after a night of drinking.

611 Market St.

(570) 523-6000

Lewisburg Hotel

Inside Lewisburg Hotel is Cameron Bar and Lounge. They stock about 20 varieties of domestic and imported beers, including 12 drafts. Nice wine list, if you're interested, and also the kind of place where you could order a glass of wine. The most popular time to go is during their wing nights.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Go downtown to the off-campus houses on Saint Catherine's Street, 6th Street, 7th Street, and St. Louis Street. Or head uphill to fraternity row if there is a big frat party going on, or if you know a brother.
