Academic Experience

Academic Experience at Brown Mackie College - Louisville: This college is one course a month, this is very helpful in the way that you can focus on the one subject and really understand it instead of juggling 5 different subjects. The workload is fast pace but set up in a very organized manner. The curriculum is very OT specific, we get hands on, guest speakers, and personal experiences from individuals who have been under the care of an OTA. Everything we do is geared toward the profession and how to handle each type of situation as a Occupational Therapy Assistant. It is required of us to have 12 hours of observation time at a facility before going into our fieldwork 1 and then to have 12 hours of volunteer time at a facility before moving into the 4 months of fieldwork 2, where we put our knowledge and learning into real live situations.

Academic Experience at Brown Mackie College - Phoenix: As an Occupational Therapy Assistant I get to work hands on with patients of all variety that need help to regain independence in completing their daily activities that are purposeful to them. While attending school we have multiple classes that vary from neurological rehabilitation to functional anatomy to pediatrics/geriatrics. Each class is broken up into four weeks with 3 quizzies, multiple in-class assignments, discussions and lots of laughter. We do learn a lot of information within a short time, but the way our class is set up it works out greatly and learning everything is not as difficult as people would normally think. Before we graduate, we get the opportunity to work out in our field during a four month internship/clinical experience. Our fieldwork coordinator sets up two separate facilities that fall into the facility settings we enjoy the most, like I want to work in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), therefore our fieldwork coordinator will try to put me in that setting. As for the workload for a COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant), it all depends on the amount of patients that enter your facility and the type of facility you work in. In a hospital outpatient setting you could see more patients than you would see in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), due to the fact that in a SNF the patients are continuously there and do not come and go like outpatients do.

Academic Experience at Brown Mackie College - Boise: I cam to Brown Mackie in order to obtain my degree in a timely manner and because I heard so many good things about their courses in the program. Here at Brown Mackie College there is one separate building that is only for student in the vet tech program. The teachers go out of their way to help your specific needs in class. There lectures are clear and they allow time to ask questions which is extremely important to me. We are also able to have hands-on learning classes in the vet tech program which was a huge part of my decision to come to this school. I learn best by being hands-on, so the school being set up the way it is, is very helpful to my college success. I never have more homework than I can handle. the professors are really good at working with you when personal issues arise making it hard to get assignments in on time.
