Health & Safety: The BYU police are available for assistance. The strict school guidelines on drinking, drugs, etc, make this an extremely safe campus. The few reported incidents we've had on "rape hill" lead to the school adding many lamp post/ street lights to remove the issue.

Local Area: It's a nice area, especially for young families, but the nightlife is nonexistent.

Campus Housing: The new heritage buildings are gorgeous, clean, spacious, and the apartments have their own kitchens, dining/living rooms, and bathrooms. The ward setup makes it extremely easy to make friends, while the dorm set up makes it easy to keep to yourself and study if needed.

Majors: I think the hardest part was finally choosing a major. BYU has so many options that narrowing it down to just one major was really hard for me. Many majors are open-enrollment and that's what my major- Human Development- was.

Guys & Girls: BYU was recently rated in the top five colleges with the most attractive and intelligent AND kind students and that's incredibly accurate. The guys and girls at BYU are incredibly Christ-like and attractive. Dating is always a constant annoyance but I feel like that's the same for all emerging adults.

Campus Food: The food on campusin the Cannon Center and the Cougareat is really unhealthy for you but BYU has done a really good job of providing alternate options like healthy snacks or meals in the vending machines around campus.

Party Scene: BYU parties are different than other college parties. There's no alcohol or drugs, there's clean dancing, and people are usually polite enough not to flaunt their relationship in public in a gross way. BYU even has school-sponsored quite frequently that are put on by the school leadership program.

Athletics: Lots of people love going to the games but it's not a huge deal if you miss one or even if you never go to a game. The sports teams make a really big deal about passing out fliers on campus to get people excited about going to the games and make sure people know when the games are. The team members are really talented.

Administration: Everyone at BYU has signed the honor code and agreed to live by its standards. We're all here to learn and grow and by enforcing the rules with strictness it just reminds the students that they're here to study and learn as much as they can. The only issue BYU seems to have is the beard policy but people still live by it, they just like to complain about it a lot.

Local Area: It's definitely a college town, because there are two universities within 15 minutes of each other if you're driving, so a lot of the stores and attractions are geared toward college kids. But there are a lot of families in Provo; people graduated from college and never left, they're raising their family here and that adds a whole new dynamic to the town as well. Most of the cultural events and big sporting events happen on BYU campus and the shopping is isn't half bad if you don't mind driving a few minutes. Provo is a wonderful place to live!

Off-Campus Housing: Its hard to find housing that isn't overly priced because of the fact that it must be BYU approved.

Scholarships: I did not apply for financial aid,but I was awarded a full tuition scholarship. Scholarships however are rare, and limited due to the already low cost of tuition.

Athletics: School spirit is phenomenal. Once a Cougar always a Cougar. Fans are die hards. The teams usually do very well.

Academics: The academics at BYU are amazing, especially for their price. Professors are all well trained and skilled in their teaching areas. Classes are challenging no doubt, but that is why the school is considered so prestigious. The social scene may not be for you, but the academics make up for it.

Guys & Girls: Students are very religious and mostly closed minded. If you are coming to school for a purely academic experience then this is the place for you. If you want to get married then this is the place for you. The dating scene is huge. The social life however is very different from most other colleges. There is no drinking. There is a curfew. There is a dress code. If you are not prepared to follow these rules then the social life will be really hard.

Off-Campus Dining: There are lots of different restaurants in Provo. Most of them are reasonably priced as well.

A BYU experience is unlike anything else. The things that you will learn go far beyond what is taught in the classrooms, and the people that you will meet are exceptional. Researching the school, and being familiar with the rules and expectations of students, will make the transition smoother and help you get the most out of your BYU experience.

Talking with people who have attended, reading books such as this one, and looking at the BYU Web site (www.byu.edu) are all great ways to make sure that this is really the school for you. If you decide that BYU is what you want, then jump in and enjoy it! You are in for a great and character-building experience.
