5 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: People are very attractive, quite athletic, and have interesting personalities. Very few people are self-absorbed or have their guards up, creating a feeling of openness.

5 College Junior

Guys & Girls: Everyone is driven, smart, athletic and attractive. Very great quality of students overall.

3 Recent Alumnus

Guys & Girls: Kind of homogenous--upper-class, privileged, and white. That gets annoying, but once you find people who aren't carbon copies of each other people are really friendly and interesting to get to know.

Finding a blond, blue-eyed hockey player with good grades or a brunette, green-eyed men's soccer team captain studying neuroscience is not difficult at Bowdoin. The guys here might be some of the hottest at any college in Maine. If you think the South harbors the best-looking students, take a moment and look at Bowdoin students before you rule out the North. Bowdoin is a very athletic school, and except for the few football players who need the weight to be competitive, most of the athletes at Bowdoin need to stay fit. Many suggest that Bowdoin looks like a modeling agency brought to life, not only because of the attractive students but in how people can become too wrapped up in their images, their work-out schedules, and how they eat. A nationally read magazine ranked Bowdoin in its Top Five for best-looking guys.

The girls at Bowdoin, however, get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to perception of attractiveness. The female population would not be considered unattractive, but the male consensus is that they’ve seen schools with better. The girls here don’t spend tons of energy in preparing their wardrobe and hair, while guys can get away with a lot and still look hot. But, while the girls aren't considered as attractive as the guys, they are viewed as more hardworking, more outgoing, and more into partying. Overall, both genders are considered  to be fun and friendly. The hooking-up scene at Bowdoin is popular, but this campus is probably less sexually promiscuous than others because students here realize how hard it is to avoid someone they’ve hooked up with. Overall, at Bowdoin, you’ll meet a very diverse student body with many points of view, interests, and hobbies. Students feel a certain sense of comfort here, and they come to Bowdoin to learn, play, and get to know interesting people.

Social Scene
Sixty percent of the student body is involved in sports, so the social scene often revolves around sports teams. Social houses also provide a possibility for parties and socializing. These parties are more appealing to freshmen and sophomores, and there is generally at least one per weekend. Since social houses have taken the place of the fraternity system, the pressure and mischievous behavior that once may have existed during the Golden Age of fraternities no longer exists at Bowdoin. Students are very accepting of one anothers' decisions in terms of participating or abstaining from drinking. If you enjoy being a part of one core group but like having many friendly faces you know, then the Bowdoin Bubble will make you feel comfortable. Due to the size and intimacy of the campus, it does not take long before you start remembering people's faces, names, and distinguishing attributes (i.e. what sport they play, the a cappella group they sing for, etc.). Prospective students and visitors comment on how friendly the student body is.
Hookups or Relationships?
It is often said that two extremes exist at Bowdoin: hookups and intensely dedicated and intimate relationships. Dating at Bowdoin can be difficult since there aren't many places on campus to go where there will not be people you know staring at you or waving hello. Dating on campus often boils down to dinner at Moulton or attending different campus parties together. However, there are numerous restaurants downtown that offer nice and classy possibilities for dates. The random-hookup scene on campus is well subscribed to, but students comment that because of the small size of campus and familiarity with each other through campus involvement, it is hard to avoid people you hooked up with, and relations can become awkward.
Dress Code
Fashion at Bowdoin can range from sweatpants and flip-flops to a mildly preppy style. Some people spend time every day planning out their appearance, while others just throw on whatever they can find. There is a feeling of "outdoorsyness," with popular labels being L.L.Bean and North Face. The most widespread clothing is Bowdoin apparel in the form of hats, sweatshirts, T-shirts, sweats, and flip-flops.
