4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Courses at BU are very diverse and cover both core topics and individual case studies, which makes everything even more interesting. The professors all seem very knowledgable and are ready to help. However, professors also make you study very hard, and do not make it easy for you to get a good grade. It requires a lot of studying and discipline to get As here.

The overall structure of the courses and the semester is very easy to understand, and switching majors or changing courses (in the first few weeks of the semester) is easily done over the internet.

Overall Experience: I found out that many people respect BU very much. Having great alumni like Martin Luther King and Owen Young gives us students a very privileged standing. Also, finding a job after getting a degree is fairly easy.

Campus Housing: The campus is not really a campus. Commonwealth Avenue is very loud, and the T tracks in the middle of the road do not make it easy to cross the road. Also, the buildings do not have a common theme, and everything looks so random and not put together.

The main freshmen dorm, Warren towers, has way too many students in one dorm. On top of that the rooms are tiny and the common rooms are a joke. There is literally no opportunity to cook or bake, which forces you to purchase the extremely expensive dining plans. Also, housing is too expensive for what you get.

Greek Life: Greek life is not a huge part of Boston University. There are only a few sororities and fraternities, and most of the people here do not care very much. I would say that the commitment is not as big as at other schools like USC.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: One of Boston University's strengths is its Ice Hockey Team. Except that there is a basketball team that is sometimes successful, but other than that there is not much going on concerning athletics. BU does not even have a football team.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Boston University is great to explore different fields and find out what ultimately suits you best. Academic advisors and help in general is easily accessible and very helpful. Most of my classes are challenging but also reward me for trying my best and studying hard. The only down side of this institution is how they handle scholarships and the people in general. BU decided not to give any merit-based scholarships to international students and only to domestic ones. Since tuition is crazily expensive, most international students are rich. Adding the fact that the university is in the middle of the city without an actual campus, the college life feeling is not really present and ethnic groups polarize causing no interaction between these diverse groups of people. Also, many students here tend to be snobbish and not care about their courses. This leaves the people, who are actually there to study, being very competitive and ambitious.

Health & Safety: the administration has been having some trouble acknowledging the reality that many women face, but hopefully that is in the past and the tide is turning.

Overall Experience: Professors - Incredible caliber, a top expert on ISIS just transferred to BU from Harvard. Not a lot of professors leave.

Classes - Such a diverse range of topics and all of them sound amazing

Class styles - All types to accommodate learning types from bug lectures to seminars to independent study. No classes taught by TAs.

Nightlife - So many things to do on campus and in Boston

Students - So chill and friendly but really smart. People are smart without being pretentious.

Food - Don't even get me started

Overall Experience: Our career center is amazing and I know I'll be all set when I graduate. I've had internships every year, very easy to find them and huge network of helpful alums.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Incredible faculty, the best food in the country, a campus integrated into the city, lots of housing options, educated and insightful students, and more research opportunities than I ever thought I'd get access to. The career center is also amazing. Unfortunately, we are ranked to have the hardest grading in the country and the hardest finals.

Overall Experience: Great location in the city, diverse education, diverse students from all of the nation and world. But very expensive.

While BU certainly has its downfalls, most of which are due to the sheer size of the University, there are plenty of opportunities to take full advantage of all that it has to offer. For the resourceful and motivated, a little effort will go a long way. The most important thing is to utilize your professors to your advantage. It is their job to be available to their students, and while some are certainly more attentive than others, students are not turned away by a professor when they have gone looking for opportunities or support.

Keeping busy, being well-organized, and choosing a course of study that truly stimulates your intellectual interests will all be really helpful in having a successful experience at BU. Many students dread graduation day, and therefore, leaving Boston is not something they look forward to. On the flip-side, countless others would argue the opposite perspective. Accept your environment and work with it, as well as against it. Do not stay inside for too long, and do not drink away your college years. Make school a priority, and hang out with your professors (they are the best resource you have). Boston is a huge city with a really large population of young people. If you are looking for a taste of city life, and think that you would be able to establish yourself at a big university in a high-paced atmosphere, it is definitely possible to find your niche here.
