4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Boston University is a large, diverse school located in a great city surrounded by a plethora of other colleges. In the time I've been there, I've changed so much as a person. Being in a city, people are encouraged to show their true colors, and that's exactly what I've done! However, during my freshman year, I've learned that college is nothing like high school. The engineering program has a rigorous freshman year planned out for entering students, and many people dropped into courses after the first exams. After doing poorly on my first Calc I midterm, my engineering academic advisor advised me to drop the course instead of offering me other solutions to fix this problem (such as peer tutoring or study groups!). Overall, I am satisfied with my first semester at BU due to the amazing professors and the people I've met, not only at my school, but surrounding colleges as well! I can't wait to see what my next few years here have to offer.

Health & Safety: I usually feel very safe on campus. The problem with sexual assault usually occurs in fraternity houses outside of campus.

Overall Experience: There are a variety of courses offered here, so you can find your perfect class. Though the lectures can be large and overwhelming, the smaller discussion sections make you more comfortable. The professors are also great, and are well educated in their areas.

Overall Experience: Our career development center is great, and I believe that a degree from BU will get you many places.

Campus Housing: I live in Warren Towers, and while the facilities are not as great as other dormitories, the people are very friendly and it is close to all my classes.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life is not a big part of BU (which I like). It doesn't really effect the social atmosphere.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: Students only really care about the hockey team, most other sports are ignored.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I love Boston University so far. Though the workload can be hard to manage sometimes, I know that I am getting a quality education, surrounded by intelligent peers.

Health & Safety: I have never felt unsafe walking alone at night although I try to be with someone else since it is the city.

Campus Housing: Like the fact that the majority of the students in my dorm (Towers) are Freshman and has given me a chance to make friends. Next year some of those friends and I look forward to getting housing together in another area.

Greek Life: I have friends involved with Greek life that are enjoying it.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Love attending hockey games. Students and fans are very enthusiastic and supportive for our teams.

Overall Experience: I love the fact that BU is an open campus within the city and that my housing is close to all my classes. I have met some great people from all around the world. I am excited to be in the program that I am in, which is one of the best in the country. I feel confident that upon graduation I will be able to find a job in my field easily with the degree from BU. BU was my first choice in schools but the cost was so high I wasn't sure it would happen. Fortunately BU was very generous with financial aid and along with several outside scholarships it became possible! I love it here!

Health & Safety: The school makes sure that students know the health services available to them, and this is reinforced with the wonderful health services provided. I had an infection in my eye which was quickly taken care of thanks to the health care providers, and contacting them, and getting the help I needed was easy with their guidance.

Campus Housing: You have a lot of options but the process is like a lottery.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I feel able to work hard and achieve goals I set.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Campus security is generally great, though the process for swiping into dorms has some flaws.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: My experiences with professors thus far have been phenomenal. Studio classes are very small in size which is fantastic. Lectures are large, but I haven't seen that as a problem yet. Courses are challenging but professors make themselves available to their students.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: There is less career support for the arts from the university, but the professors are extremely helpful with internships. It is difficult to have an internship during the semester due to course schedules, school commitments, and workload.

2 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Dorms are extremely small without many common spaces; disappointing for the amount charged. Grades don't help you with the housing lottery which is disappointing.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I don't know much about Greek life on campus because I'm not particularly interested in it.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: I don't pay much attention to sports on campus. Hockey is huge, but other than that, there is little talk of sports on campus.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Boston University is a wonderful research university but also has a thriving conservatory-style College of Fine Arts which is why I chose the school.

While BU certainly has its downfalls, most of which are due to the sheer size of the University, there are plenty of opportunities to take full advantage of all that it has to offer. For the resourceful and motivated, a little effort will go a long way. The most important thing is to utilize your professors to your advantage. It is their job to be available to their students, and while some are certainly more attentive than others, students are not turned away by a professor when they have gone looking for opportunities or support.

Keeping busy, being well-organized, and choosing a course of study that truly stimulates your intellectual interests will all be really helpful in having a successful experience at BU. Many students dread graduation day, and therefore, leaving Boston is not something they look forward to. On the flip-side, countless others would argue the opposite perspective. Accept your environment and work with it, as well as against it. Do not stay inside for too long, and do not drink away your college years. Make school a priority, and hang out with your professors (they are the best resource you have). Boston is a huge city with a really large population of young people. If you are looking for a taste of city life, and think that you would be able to establish yourself at a big university in a high-paced atmosphere, it is definitely possible to find your niche here.
