3 College Junior

Technology: The printing situation on campus needs to be fixed asap. Certain teachers do not rely on textbooks but only print-out readings which add up quickly on your printer tab.

3 College Freshman

Technology: they're not the best or newest but there is plenty of them all around campus

3 College Freshman

Technology: There is vast access to computers, but most if not all students have their own personal computer or tablet. The Wi-Fi SUCKS but it gets the job done.

4 Recent Alumnus

Technology: There are plenty of computer labs with newer desktops, all with access to WiFi, printing, Microsoft Office, etc. Lots of students have laptops, but you would be fine for four years without one.

4 College Sophomore

Technology: There are computers in most of the buildings, and WiFi. A lot of people bring their own computers, but it's not usually necessary unless it's finals week. Printing usually isn't a problem either.

The best thing about the computers at Birmingham-Southern is that the majority of them are brand new. Although the IT staff does not have a very visible presence on campus, because their office is located in the basement (or the dungeon, some say) of the Harbert building, they are quick to respond to e-mails through their Helpdesk Web site ( When new students arrive on campus, each computer is whisked away for a 24-hour period so that they can configure them to work with the network properly. If your computer situation changes during the year, they are willing to reconfigure your new setup as well. They also equip each computer with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, and periodically send out e-mails informing students and faculty of any known computer viruses or threats that they should be aware of. If you're prone to be a late-night studier, then the in-dorm labs will be a convenient option for you. All of the dorms are equipped with computer labs and printers. Sometimes the printers are on the fritz or are out of paper, but usually within a day or so, they are in working shape again. While having your own personal computer may be easy, there is certainly not a lack of accessible computers on campus.
