Facts & Statistics

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Classes are a lot harder than at state schools.
  • Don't try to bring extra furniture for the freshman dorms, it won't fit!
  • Get on the smallest meal plan possible.
  • How to manage my time better.
  • It's not a good school for people who are undecided about their majors.
  • It's not a grad school kind of place.
  • The difference between hours and credits.
  • You don't have to read the summer reading before the first provost forum.
  • You don't have to wear your nametag during orientation.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Call the campus visit coordinator in the Office of Admission at (205) 226-4696 or (800) 523-5793. The admission staff can arrange an interview with an admission counselor or a campus tour with a student host. Other possibilities are information sessions with professors or directors of events or majors. Try to visit when classes are in session to experience the full spectrum of opportunities available. Also, summer preview days are a good way to see a leisurely view of the school when it's not bustling with people.
Campus Tours
Campus tours run from 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. (Central Time). Call in advance to set up an appointment.
Overnight Visits
If you're interested in an overnight visit, talk to an admissions counselor and they will set you up with a place to stay with a current student. Members of the Triangle Club and the Students Offering Support usually house interested students during the school year and can give students a hands-on view of life at Southern.
