4 College Freshman

Local Area: Berry College has its own zip code which makes it pretty unique. If you love the outdoors this is the school for you. There are miles of hiking and running paths. It is a truly beautiful campus.

Local Area: Very old town needs revamping!

4 College Junior

Local Area: School is extremely safe. I normally leave my dorm room open, but I always lock my car. Off campus is pretty safe, but I'm hardly ever by myself when I go to Walmart after dark. It can get a little sketchy there. Shopping is decent; there's lots of little boutiques downtown and a decent mall. The Rome Braves stadium is about a 3 minute drive from campus and that's always fun! Berry students get discounts to the games! The movie theatre also does a discount for Berry students if you buy the tickets at our Student Activities Office located in Krannert Lobby.

Local Area: Rome has plenty of restaurants, and a few nightlife options, but they're only "fun" if you know a lot of people are going. They have an odd shortage of ice cream options, much to my dismay, but frozen yogurt places abound. The mall is a very sad place, but it has a few good choices (American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Rue21, Express, Buckle coming soon). Not really a whole lot else to do outside of that, in my opinion. Rome has some gorgeous spots if you know where to look.

Rome is more of a family-friendly city than a college town, even though it houses two separate colleges. The local atmosphere is friendly, but it can become redundant after your first year at Berry. For some students, more fun is found on campus with friends than off campus. If students want the stereotypical college-town vibe, they won't find it here, which is the reason most students are attracted to Berry in the first place. In addition, Rome is midway between Chattanooga and Atlanta, which gives students more options if they want a weekend getaway.

On weekends, many students go home, which is why Berry has earned the nickname of being a "suitcase college." There have been initiatives that have been effective in keeping students on campus for the weekends, but Berry can still feel like a ghost town on a Saturday afternoon. If you are looking for fun in Rome on a weekend, be prepared to spend money, as most "fun" is centered around shopping and eating.
