Campus Housing: You could be living in the nicest dorm in America, or the shittiest. Depends on where you land in the lottery.

Off-Campus Dining: Not much to eat unless you have a car. Even then, not too many places to go.

1 College Sophomore

Greek Life: There are not frats or sororities at Bates.

2 College Sophomore

Party Scene: This is NOT a party school. Also, the new administration is determined to get rid of the drinking scene, making an already stale party scene even more boring.

Majors: I have never had an internship.

Guys & Girls: Bates is so attractive and so so friendly.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: It's all about where you live but generally good.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Recently they've started to crack down on drinking.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: We have a large selection of majors and minors.

2 College Sophomore

Diversity: Most students are white and upper-middle class.

Party Scene: I love the party scene at Bates, but it is a little hit or miss. Usually it starts with a small pregame in someone's dorm room and then moves to Frye Street (on campus houses) or off campus houses (usually team houses). We don't have frats, but teams act like them if that's the scene your looking for. Fridays can be pretty up or down but Saturdays are usually really fun. Dances are HUGE at Bates. 80s is the biggest, but there are a lot (usually corresponding to some decade but not always) and everyone gets REALLY into them.

Scholarships: I didn't apply for financial aid, but my impression is that if you need it you get at least some, but perhaps not all, of what you need. Also, Bates is need-blind for admissions.

Off-Campus Dining: It is surprisingly good. Fuel and Fishbones are great for dinners with parents. Forage has the best breakfast sandwiches and bagels in the whole world. Davinci's has some killer Italian food. And in Auburn you have more chains, like Starbucks and Panera to fill that niche.

Local Area: Lewiston isn't a garden spot, and the locals aren't too fond of Bates students. (Understandably; they're mostly working class, Bates students are very privileged.) However, it is getting better, and anything you need is within in 10 minute drive. Also, Lewiston has surprisingly fantastic food... great for meals out with parents or with friends.

Health & Safety: Bates is known for being an extremely safe place compared to other colleges. Unfortunately its important to note that pretty much every college has this issue.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Its better if you're on a team but non athletes can still turn up. All in all its real fun. The big ones are only on Thurs-Sat but there is something almost every night.

5 College Sophomore

Athletics: Being on a team is so much fun and a really great part of my college experience

5 College Sophomore

Greek Life: It doesn't exist, but this survey made me answer the rating options

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: There are a bunch of sweet houses you can pick from.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: The professors are geniuses and really interesting.

Administration: Clayton Spencer (the president) is incredible, she thinks through every big decision and is more passionate about higher education than anyone else I could imagine. Both Ms. Spencer and the deans work FOR the students. I know that they are on my side, which is very comforting.

Administration: The administration is very understanding and remembers what its like being in college. They hold you responsible yet trust you to be responsible and don't have arbitrary rules.

Greek Life: We don't have Greek life and I see that as a plus for non-exclusive socialization.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: The local area is pretty boring but it has a Walmart so... there's that.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Food: I love the campus food! I mean yeah, month to month they'll run the same schedule, but they do mix it up for holidays and such. Our vegan bar is really good, too! My personal favorite from it is the Asian Noodle Bowl. It's spicy and warm! I also love our desserts.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Bates students vary greatly in their opinions of their school. Some feel that Bates is a great school and wouldn’t dream of having gone to another. Others spend their four years at Bates wishing they were someplace else. Bates is a very unique school, and for the people it suits, it’s amazing. People who were looking for a different college experience are less happy. Bates does provide its students with a number of opportunities, and considering its size and resources, tries hard to accommodate every student. However, it is a small school in a small city and obviously can’t have all the same resources that are available at larger universities. The student body isn’t characterized by diversity, so if people who go to Bates aren’t your type, it’s easy to feel frustrated and out of place.

But whether you love Bates or hate it, when you graduate, you’ll have a degree from one of the most selective liberal arts schools in the country, which definitely counts for something. Before you decide which school you want to go to, you need to be very sure what you want from a college. If you’re looking for an intimate atmosphere, a close-knit campus, and an academically challenging school, you’ll probably enjoy Bates. If you want a big university with a diverse student body and an exciting city nearby, you might be better off somewhere else. Overall, Bates is a good school with an amazing faculty and a very strong academic program. Even students who might wish they were somewhere else will leave the school with a very valuable degree and a unique learning experience.
