Party Scene

1 College Freshman

Party Scene: Nothing to do if you don't want to go to bars.

2 College Freshman

Party Scene: I have been to several dorm parties, all have been very small and awkward. I've only ever been to one frat party here and was not impressed. It seems the only way to party is to go out to bars, which in this area one must be 21+. Most weekends my friends and I just end up hanging out in one of our rooms. Also, Thursday is a huge party night because it is common to not have classes Friday, but my schedule has never worked out like that so that may be why I don't have a great party experience.

Party Scene: Night life isn't the best of the best, but there's always the city.

Party Scene: Right in Manhattan- night life can be as crazy or as calm as you want it to be, all while being vibrant, diverse, accessible, and fun. I wish there was a more thriving nightlife on campus, but having the city and subway at your fingertips is pretty incredible.

There are few places in the world with nightlife as abundant as in New York City. Unfortunately, all of this fantastic nightlife is far from Barnard's campus. Since Barnard and Columbia make up almost all of Morningside Heights, there are plenty of places to find liquor nearby, but these places just provide the drinks and forget about the ambience. This probably isn't very different than other college towns, but because New York has so much more to offer, students know that the bar scene is lacking. Most of the time students don't really care and enjoy just hanging out with friends over a few drinks near campus, appreciating that they don't have to pay cab fare or the high prices for Manhattan's trendy drinks.

There are plenty of bars to choose from on Broadway, near Barnard, but because there is far less space than there are students, they tend to be crowded no matter when you go. There are no clubs near Barnard at all, which is fine since clubbing is so expensive, anyway. Most people don't mind spending $12 on a cab to get downtown when the club's cover is $30. Basically, there is any sort of entertainment you could ever imagine in New York, but for Barnard students, it's more of a question of money and motivation. You'll probably usually want cheap and convenient, but if you ever feel the need to do something special and go to one of the many clubs or bars downtown, you're sure to have a good time. There are dozens of places just a cab ride and cover charge away.

Organization Parties
It's unheard of for the school to sponsor a party with alcohol. This just doesn't ever happen. Campus clubs will throw parties, like Orgo on the night before organic chemistry finals, but if you want a party, you shouldn't be looking on campus.
Did You Know?
If you're not 21, find some older friends and go out anyways. Most bars and clubs in New York won't turn away a girl, especially if she is dressed nicely and is over 18. Or you can go out to see a movie or a Broadway show with discount tickets that can be purchased in the College Activities Office.
