Guys & Girls

Guys & Girls: The girls are really great, and the lesbian dating scene seems on point. but the Columbia guys are boring and preppy.

Guys & Girls: Expect to feel lonely and often. Around you are a constant parade of aloof and irritated students who have the gpa's to back up their haughty, 'greater than thou' expressions. Just remember though, even that girl you see everyday with the chronic bitch face is wondering how it is that one makes friends around here. Just say hi. It's terrifying, yes, especially when it's just you and every other glamazon on this campus, but the other young lady will often be all the more thankful for someone initiating the conversation. It's important to radiate self-confidence here, but often times, it can be mistaken for arrogance, so remembering to smile every now and then will take you a long way.

Guys & Girls: It's harder to meet boys because it's all women but you can just go to Columbia parties. It's not really that difficult. Plenty of girls for gay students though!

Guys & Girls: There are many more girls on campus then guys

Guys & Girls: The guys are, overall, attractive and decent human beings, or at least the one's I've met. They is a handful of gay men on campus. The LGBTQ community is substantial on campus, which is not a problem at all, The girls are fine. Being that Barnard is all girls, and there is a shortage of males (from Columbia across the street), some drama can and does arise every once in a while. Overall, the women are great, really supportive, and form an amazing community of diverse intellectuals.

Looks rate very low on the priority list for girls at Barnard. Some people will come to class in an outfit very similar to the one they wore to bed the night before. When sleep is precious, and you're not trying to impress anyone, then what you wear to class doesn't matter. Other people, however, might show up in a dress and heels to class. This usually isn't because they want to look good, but usually because they have a fantastic interview downtown that they need to look the part for. The main theme for Barnard girls is that they don't try to look a certain way for look's sake, but rather for the weather, for a job, or because they're tired and they're going right back to sleep after class.

As far as strict looks go, there are some truly beautiful women that attend Barnard. The dancers in particular are usually quite gorgeous. However, there are quite a few more that aren't so aesthetically blessed. Barnard is a college to be yourself; so even the ugliest of ducklings wouldn't feel left out because they don't have flawless skin or straight, gleaming teeth. People might come to Barnard for a lot of things, but they don't come to run with a crowd of supermodels. It's not that Barnard women aren't attractive; it's that they realize how many things are more important than their appearance. They're in college to expand their minds, not spend every minute fixing their hair and looking in the mirror. There's a casually tossed around catchphrase that each student is a "strong, beautiful, Barnard woman." This statement actually makes looks less of an issue by serving as a confidence-booster. In fact, confidence is one of the most important things Barnard students gain during their time here.

Social Scene
When Barnard girls go out, they tend to go downtown and far away from the college scene. Just like in any other college town, the bars will card pretty tough right around campus, although it's usually easier for a girl to get the man at the door to look the other way. To avoid this, Barnard girls will go downtown where the crowd is a little less juvenile.
Hookups or Relationships?
There is a saying around the Columbia University community that says, "Columbia to wed; Barnard to bed." This isn't entirely warranted, but there is a little bit of truth to it. Either a Barnard girl has a long-distance boyfriend or she is going from guy to guy, though not necessarily a Columbia guy because most of them are stuck-up, and far fewer are good looking.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
The best place to meet someone is in class or some sort of club involvement if you really want to be interested in them as a person. Otherwise, go to bars. There are lots of guys and girls there that only come to talk to and hit on other guys and girls, especially at the West End. Set your standards low and you won't be disappointed.
