Campus Quality

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Beautiful campus, maintained exceptionally well. 3 mile long entrance road having very detailed landscaping the entire way is a good example. All the buildings are under 10 years old, everything is well maintained and clean in general. Great facilities.

Campus Quality: It's hard to say what exactly sets Ave apart. I'd say it's in the students it attracts and retains. There are great people to meet here, no matter what type of person you are. For a small school, you can meet a great variety of people, and no matter what their status is, they tend to be great people.

The professors are top-notch, without a doubt, as well.

3 Niche User

Campus Quality: It's a privet catholic college. Even though it's a small school, the people down there want you to suceed and are so nice. It's a place where you'll be treated like a person and not a number. Plus Ave Maria keeps things small so you get more one on one attention.

3 Niche User

Campus Quality: Most of the facilities are very nice and clean. There are places for students to hang out and to pray. I also like how clean and grean looking the campus is.

Campus Quality: It is really a great environment to study in. There are enough events on campus where you can miss one or two and not be out of things to do. The SAB and some of the households are really active in planning or sponsoring events and trips off campus. The cafe is open until 2am, so there are almost always people hanging out, or playing pool or table tennis. There is also a super market about 8 minutes walk from the dorms, so shopping is convenient, although slightly more expensive than off-campus stores.

Being such a young university means all the facilities at Ave Maria are new and in excellent condition. The buildings are well maintained and kept very clean. In addition to the state of the buildings, the University also has an aesthetically pleasing campus with a touch of nature in every line of sight. As far as the actual buildings and facilities are concerned, they definitely meet the students' needs. The Student Union is built to withstand strong hurricanes and has a cafeteria, ballroom, post office and mail room, student lounge, fitness center, and Student Life offices. The fitness center there is  well equipped with all sorts of exercise machines and weights, and the hours from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. are convenient for busy students. In short, the Student Union alone can meet most of the students' needs. There is also the newly opened Golisano Field House, which has a basketball court and fully equipped weight room made especially for the student-athletes.

The Canizaro Library, a three-story building, has an extensive assortment of books that could sate even the most inquisitive scholars. The library also has a language room for learning languages, computers, a 24-hour room, group study rooms, desks, tables, and plush seats. Needless to say, everything is in perfect or near-perfect condition. The Academic Building is also in excellent condition with spacious rooms conducive to learning.

School Slang
  • JPII: Pope John Paul II Hall
  • Mama T: Mother Teresa Hall
  • Angelus Prayer: Every day at noon and 6 p.m., students stop whatever they're doing in the cafeteria area of the Student Union, stand up, and start praying the Angelus together. The prayer is probably a minute long, and after they're done, the students sit back down and get back to what they were doing (presumably eating).
  • Casino Night: This event is hosted by the Esto Vir household. The prize for whoever holds the most chips by the end of the night varies, but it's usually pretty good.
  • Dorm Wars: Dorm Wars, held in the fall, is a competition between all the dorms. The "War" consists of a lot of events, such as tug of war, capture the flag, and others that vary year to year. And, of course, the winner takes home the trophy to display in their dorm!
  • Sadie Hawkins Dance: This dance is definitely a big deal at Ave! It's usually held the weekend of Halloween or Halloween itself, so couples dress in related costumes (ex: Jasmine and Aladdin) and can enter a costume competition. Students can also go alone and still dress up with their friends. Either way, you're bound to have a good time.
  • Theology on Tap: Theology on Tap is when students and a professor or faculty member go to The Pub, where the professor will discuss in depth some theological aspect(s). Students are welcome to comment or ask questions. And this isn't held on just one night, either. Theology on Tap is the name of a series of these nights that many of the students enjoy.
Favorite Things To Do
Students typically enjoy going into town and to Naples, attending events and sports games, and hanging out in the student common rooms and the student lounge.

Did You Know?
If the Ave Maria oratory had been built any bigger, it would have created its own environment, and it would have started to rain inside! It's pretty massive and definitely a sight worth seeing.
