5 College Freshman

Weather: Its Minnesota. Sun in the summer, snow in the winter, and a little on the cooler side for fall and spring. If you don't like snow, DONT COME HERE.

Campus Food: Its college food, its not supposed to be great. I eat it because meal plans are required for first years (unless you live of campus or have medical issues with certain foods). Its good because they offer a good variety of food and usually run on a schedule for some foods. So mini burger Mondays, taco Tuesdays, wing Wednesday, etc... Its well prepared warm food that I will usually find something that I really love.

Academics: Education Major – With my major being an Secondary Education major, I worry a lot with classes and internships. Augsburg is one of the best Education colleges I could think of. Their help with internships and getting me in a classroom is AMAZING. The are very well connected to multiple Minneapolis schools and often do programs with them so that they will be more able and desiring to go to college. This also helps because the relationship between Augsburg and grade schools helps Education majors to find a way to get an internship in a great place without much difficulty. Also the Education classes have been the most rewarding of all my classes. The professors have all been great and very helpful when I ask questions or want to learn out of class subjects. The major is very well set up and is very easy to follow and complete.

Academics: Augsburg's professors are some of the best I've seen and heard. The small size of the school helps with there being less students in a class so there can be a more friendly and helpful class. Teachers will know your name! They will always have office hours and will often even make time for you out of the office hours if you can't make it. They are there for you to succeed, they all really do care about you getting a great education. There are a wide variety of classes to choose from and also Augsburg is part of the ACTC program. The program lets you take class from any of the 5 private colleges in the program, of course including Augsburg. I can not ask for more from these teachers, they have all made college a much better experience for me.

Off-Campus Housing: Varies from Place to Place – There is two neighborhoods close to the campus, cedar riverside and seward. Seward is a very safe and friendly neighborhood that is very sustainable. There is a co-op, community cafe, good coffee shops, community garden, and always lots of community events to be involved in. There are many duplexes where you can rent out a floor with a friend or two, or there are multiple apartments for rent in the neighborhood for individuals. The prices vary a lot, there is no good range to describe it. Some places are newer and more expensive while there are some older places that are very wallet friendly. Very close to the college and in perfect walking or biking distance. Ceder Riverside is a hub for cultures mixing, there are many refugees from Somalia and other African countries living in the tall high rises. There are a couple of houses for rent and some apartment living closer to the U of M campus. The is a bike shop, many coffee shops, TONS of different foods to eat (due to the mixture of cultures), great music scene, a playhouse where plays are free to see, and close to both Augsburg campus and the U of M's campus. The prices around there are relativity cheap if you can find a good place to live, helps if you rent a house with a couple of friends.

Administration: Strict but Not Too Strict – I think that the amount of strictness in this college is perfect. There is not too much of authority and we are pretty much free to do anything we want. However our security team work really hard to be at our service 24/7

Technology: I have my own laptop so i do alot of my work in my dorm. However there is a 24 hour lab in our building lobby. This is very useful because i cant print a paper out at 2 in the morning if i decide to pull an all nighter. The internet is also very fast so i get things doen wuick.

Local Area: Very Friendly – Like Minneasota custom, everyone on campus is very friendly. People always say hi to you, even if you dont know them. Anyone will open a door for you or hold a door. Its a small campus so you get to meet people at a much more personal level, including professors. We are also in the twin cities so theres lots to do. There are alot of places to get to in walking distance. Also very beautiful scenary.

Scholarships: With the help from the Enrollment Center and Admission Possible coaches, I was able to get help on getting financial aid. I'm very thankful for that.

Guys & Girls: Relationship With Students – The students at Augsburg have very good relationships, due to the small class size and major that they are in.

Campus Quality: The library is very comfortable, with many computers for students to use and helpful staffs.

Scholarships: Tranfer Student Aid – I transferred to Augsburg from the University of MN after my Freshman year. I received a decent Transfer Regents Scholarship, I received this each year in the same amount. My first year, I was not eligible for a performance "named" scholarship withing the Music Department, as I had missed the deadlines for that year. The following two years, I received small (under $1000) "named" scholarships through the Music Department. Pay attention to the dates for scholarship applications if you are planning to transfer. In general, if you have a high GPA (3.75 and above), you will get a decent scholarship from Augsburg but only a handful get excellent scholarships, and only a couple are granted the Presidential Scholarship (full ride Academic Scholarship) and Hognander Scholarship (full ride Music Scholarship - 2 students each year).

Diversity: Diversity is valued at Augsburg. Part of the benefit of attending a school in downtown Minneapolis is being surrounded by people from different cultures and backgrounds. Augsburg is known for it's community involvement, encouraging it's students to be active in the Augsburg neighborhood off-campus. On-campus, Augsburg has the StepUp Program designed for college students recovering from substance abuse and difficult living situations. Augsburg is a great school to attend if you are looking for a welcoming, diverse community in an urban environment that feels like home.

Technology: In the student center there is a computer hub with about 10 computers available and outlets in the lounge area for laptop use. Most of the time, this area is fairly quiet, and one can grab a computer or outlet easily. During the busiest times, you may need to wait 5-10 minutes for the computers. There are also several classrooms with 25 or so computers that are free for use when classes aren't in session. Printing is available at almost all computer areas, and is included in the cost of tuition and fees.

Drug Safety: The drug scene is not very apparent at augsburg. I know that it is present to some extent, but you would not come across it unless you were affiliated with those people using it. Like it is at many schools.

Off-Campus Housing: Augsburg does not offer off-campus housing for its' students. However, there is a lot of cheap off-campus housing available to students if they only look for it.

Scholarships: Fin. Aid – The entire financial aid process at Augsburg was a mostly easy process. The advisor's were all very accomodating with each student's individual arrangements. They helped as much as possible to help the students work through any and all financial needs and question. Excellent department!

Diversity: Augsburg prides itself on its diversity. The school is incredibly accepting and welcoming to any and all minorities and tries to involve everyone and make everyone feel at home with the campus and campus life. The acceptance ranges from special groups to certain scholarships available for race, religion, sexual orientation etc.. Overall, I would argue that this is one of Augsburg's strongest attributes.

Weather: It's Minnesota. Cold in the winter, and hot in the summer.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: Across the Street from the University of Minnesota – If you want to party, cross the street. If not, stay on campus.

It's that easy. Augsburg does have sober dorms for those that want nothing to do with a drunk neighbor coming home at 2:30 am.

4 College Freshman

Technology: There are many computer labs in almost all teaching halls. There are plenty in the library, and there are printers everywhere. I have never had a problem finding a place to log onto my network account and print something in my files.

The network can bog down if you are in a class using an on-network file, for example I am taking a class on MS Excel. We occasionally have to download a file at the same time.

Other than an instance like that, no worries!

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: Hard to Get Info – I know, from other students, that there is money out there that the school gives away but the school itself doesn't advertise it. It is one of those deals where we have to actively be searching for assistance.

5 College Freshman

Transportation: Hop on-Board – Being a city school we have excellent transportation access. The Minneapolis LightRail system is only a few blocks away and can easily transport you to downtown or the Mall of America.

1 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Drinking and Smoking – Personally, for myself, I see a large amount of students drinking and a fair amount of students smoking weed. Since we are a city school both alcohol and marijuana are easily available and it isn't uncommon to know someone you participates in either activity.

3 College Freshman

Majors: Diverse and Good – Many different majors which are all taught by excellent professors.
