Health & Safety: Lots of options for people who have experiences assault, drugs, or just need some therapy. Good security measures in place on and off campus

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I haven't looked into jobs but people I know seem to find internships during semesters or jobs after graduation fairly often. I have never been to the career center

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Need to spend less money on athletic departments and put it into academics

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Wish there were more things to do

Party Scene: If you are white conservative/moderate Republican, places like Toomer's Corner and downtown Auburn are great. It you are not, it's best to go somewhere else. There are no Black owned and operated (and few other minority owned and operated) places in downtown Auburn. Even the barber shops don't cater to those who are not white conservative/moderate Republicans. African Americans have to go along Opelika Road, northwest Auburn, or Opelika to have any kind of life. Again, Auburn is a go-along-to-get-along place, where people get very defensive, and compare the college town/campus environment to no end with Athens, Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Baton Rouge and other cities/towns with SEC schools. Their moral superiority complex (and yes, subtle racial segregation) is what frustrates me more about Auburn than anything else. Having lived in Auburn since 2006 and having spent four years in Athens, Georgia; I most definitely prefer Athens 365/24/7. No, Athens is not always sunshine and lollipops either, but it's way ahead of Auburn. The loveliest village on the Plains still has some growing up to do.

Party Scene: I am not much of a partyer.

Academics: TOO MUCH EMPHASIS on the practical over the classical. There should be more of a balance between liberal arts and the practical sciences. Auburn should not be afraid to emphasize liberal arts more, especially considering the success of the Plainsman student newspaper. It seems as if there is more concentration on being educated to getting certain types of jobs and making lots of money. As Dr. Cornel West once put in one of his books, we may be better schooled but not necessarily better educated. Like other colleges and universities, Auburn needs to further emphasize lifelong learning.

Diversity: There is a white conservative Republican atmosphere on campus and in the surrounding city that makes the environment very insular and stifling. It seems that the only African Americans that get acceptance on campus are those who play football and men's basketball. Every other African American is seen as invisible unless they yell WAR EAGLE real loud or get too caught up in the Auburn "family.' The "family" concept is a good marketing tool to try to get people to get involved. It's like a "go along to get along/don't rock the boat" atmosphere instead of the stereotypical "friendly" atmosphere. Many African American alumni are just now starting to embrace Auburn.

Drug Safety: The fact that four student-athletes from the football team were arrested recently shows you that a drug problem exists. This occurred after two student-athletes from the 2013 and 2014 football teams were arrested and caught with marijuana possession. One wonders whether the drug policies are equally enforced depending on whether or not you are on the football team. Alcohol consumption is a big problem on football weekends. I have personally seen whiskey and beer bottles and cans left inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Overall Experience: Too much emphasis on the practical over the classical. It seems that, like similar schools, Auburn University is judged only on the success or failure of its football program. Sometimes this person has wondered about whether there's more emphasis on athletics over academics, with the lack of state support for public education. But there's always lots of money for football-related stuff (aka Jerry Dome like scoreboard) for the football stadium. Even toward athletics, too much emphasis on football at the expense of other sports (like swimming & diving, softball and equestrian, all of which have won SEC and national championships lately). Auburn is finally getting around to what to do with Haley Center and a new academic building being built next to the library.

Health & Safety: Some areas are well lit. Lots of emergency phones around campus.

Overall Experience: I am still seeking career options a year and a half after receiving my doctorate. Overemphasis on "practical" education at the expense of "classic" education I think hurts the value of my Ph.D. There should be a balance of practical and classical, like I had at the University of Georgia, where I got my undergraduate degree in history, and seem to strive for a balance of both practical and classical, or "society school"/"cow college" combination in curriculum, environment, etc.

Campus Housing: I did not live in campus housing.

Greek Life: I did not join a Greek organization.

Athletics: Football is big around here, perhaps too big. Fortunately, Auburn has competed for and won SEC and national championships in other (Olympic) sports to keep us grounded.

Overall Experience: Auburn has its good points. But the people can get very insular, conservative, afraid of change. It has its share of segregation. The university and town feel that they are morally superior to their rivals. Some try to live up to the Auburn creed, but some don't. Not much room for differences.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel safe. The university is well lit and has emergency call boxes located everywhere

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Something for everyone. There are hard and there are easy profs

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I am not at this point yet but auburn has a wonderful career center

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Housing is great but really expensive

5 College Freshman

Athletics: Fantastic! Now let's win a football championship!

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I am happy with my choice. Housing is a bit expensive as is the food but overall my year at Auburn was great and I am ready to return for another year War Eagle!

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: There are a few aspects of Auburn that are quintessentially different, but the rest is par for the course. Collegiate education in America is subpar for a variety of reasons, and Auburn is not addressing any of those.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: It's horrible if you're stuck in the Hill dorms, and it's mediocre at the Quad. South Donahue and the Village are nice (although it's a shame the village has so many structural problems).

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I receive far too many emails about this subject from the university. It seems I get at least one a month about someone being assaulted or harassed on campus. Why is this so hard to fix?

Overall, students are very happy to be in Auburn. They love the people around them and the experiences that they get to have.

College is what you make of it. If you sit at home and don't do anything, then you won't enjoy yourself no matter where you go. With all the options you have offered to you at Auburn, you have to try to not have a good time. And with a student body that is so happy to be here, it's also hard not to get swept up in the excitement. As always, it's a good idea to visit a college or university before making a final decision. Make sure you're as happy and comfortable as you can possibly be.
